Volume 2 Number 2 October 2011
The Doncaster Naturalist Volume 2 Number 2 October 2011 Doncaster Naturalists' Society Editorial It has been another busy year for the Doncaster Naturalists' Society, thanks to the efforts of Louise Hill, our indefatigable President. She has ensured that the DNS is one of the most active of local natural history societies, and, together with Pip Seccombe, has organised a full set of activities for the forseeable future. Several DNS members also took part in field work over the last few years for a new atlas of the region's flora. The results of their labours, under the direction of Geoffrey Wilmore, will soon be available to see. The forthcoming launch in Doncaster of The South Yorkshire Plant Atlas, edited by Geoffrey Wilmore, Jeff Lunn and Professor Rodwell is a notable coup, and means that the Society will be playing host to many of the region's top naturalists. Botanical themes feature strongly in this issue of The Doncaster Naturalist. Pip Seccombe's update on her work to protect the Fritllaries at Owston is a fascinating story with a very positive result. Less happy though are the articles concerning invasive alien plants and the problems thy are causing. Owls and their pellets are topics for two articles which provide us with insights into their diets and other habits. This edition of The Doncaster Naturalist inevitably looks back at the past activities of our members and friends. The range of topics is again wide, and we have sufficient material to produce an edition with fourty-four pages this time. Contributions are welcomed from all, whether they are reports of research, descriptive anecdotes, drawings, poetry or photographs. -

Noctuidae (Insecto, Lepidoptera) by Vasily V. A n ik in , Sergey A. Sachkov , Va d im V. Z o lo t u h in & A n drey V. Sv ir id o v received 24.II.2000 Summary: 630 species of the Noctuidae are listed for the modern Volgo-Ural fauna. 2 species [Mesapamea hedeni Graeser and Amphidrina amurensis Staudinger ) are noted from Europe for the first time and one more— Nycteola siculana Fuchs —from Russia. 3 species ( Catocala optata Godart , Helicoverpa obsoleta Fabricius , Pseudohadena minuta Pungeler ) are deleted from the list. Supposedly they were either erroneously determinated or incorrect noted from the region under consideration since Eversmann 's work. 289 species are recorded from the re gion in addition to Eversmann 's list. This paper is the fifth in a series of publications1 dealing with the composition of the pres ent-day fauna of noctuid-moths in the Middle Volga and the south-western Cisurals. This re gion comprises the administrative divisions of the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Uljanovsk, Orenburg, Uralsk and Atyraus (= Gurjev) Districts, together with Tataria and Bash kiria. As was accepted in the first part of this series, only material reliably labelled, and cover ing the last 20 years was used for this study. The main collections are those of the authors: V. Nat. Croat., Vol. 30, No. 1, 37–52, 2021, Zagreb. From 2016 to 2020 numerous surveys were undertaken to improve the knowledge of the pyraloid moth fauna of Biokovo Nature Park. On August 27th, 2020 one specimen of Psorosa mediterranella (Amsel, 1954) from the family Pyralidae was collected on a small meadow (985 m a.s.l.) on Mt Biok- ovo. In this paper, the first data about the occurrence of this species in Croatia are presented. The previ- ous mention in the literature for Croatia was considered to be a misidentification of the past and has thus not been included in the checklist of Croatian pyraloid moth species. P. mediterranella was recorded for the first time in Croatia in recent investigations and, after other additions to the checklist have been counted, is the 396th species in the Croatian pyraloid moth fauna. An overview of the overall pyraloid moth fauna of Croatia is given in the updated species list. Contribution to the Knowledge of the Clown Beetle Fauna of Lebanon, with a Key to All Species (Coleoptera, Histeridae)

ZooKeys 960: 79–123. https://doi.org/10.3897/zookeys.960.50186 Abstract The occurrence of histerids in Lebanon has received little specific attention. Hence, an aim to enrich the knowledge of this coleopteran family through a survey across different Lebanese regions in this work. Sev- enteen species belonging to the genera Atholus Thomson, 1859,Hemisaprinus Kryzhanovskij, 1976, Hister Linnaeus, 1758, Hypocacculus Bickhardt, 1914, Margarinotus Marseul, 1853, Saprinus Erichson, 1834, Tribalus Erichson, 1834, and Xenonychus Wollaston, 1864 were recorded. Specimens were sampled mainly with pitfall traps baited with ephemeral materials like pig dung, decayed fish, and pig carcasses. Several species were collected by sifting soil detritus, sand cascading, and other specialized techniques. Six newly recorded species for the Lebanese fauna are the necrophilous Hister sepulchralis Erichson, 1834, Hemisap- rinus subvirescens (Ménétriés, 1832), Saprinus (Saprinus) externus (Fischer von Waldheim, 1823), Saprinus (Saprinus) figuratus Marseul, 1855, and Saprinus (Saprinus) niger (Motschulsky, 1849) all associated with rotting fish and dung, and the psammophilousXenonychus tridens (Jacquelin du Val, 1853).
