Forest and forest (wood) products can play an important role both as a means to reduce emissions and to increase sinks. Forest sector activities can influence carbon fluxes directly by:

SEQUESTRATION: •Storing carbon in forest or forest products

•By substituting fossil fuels with bioenergy

SUBSTITUTION: •Indirectly by using wood products in place of more greenhouse gas intensive materials like steel, aluminum, and concrete.

2.3 Occupancy Classification/Major Occupancies

The Project will contain a Group A, Division 2 (School) major occupancy, with Group F, Division 2 (Laboratory/School Shops) and Group D (Offices) subsidiary occupancies. (c) Same fire- resistance rating as for supported assembly.

2.4.1 Summary of Construction Requirements

The construction/structural fire protection requirements are summarized below: • non-combustible construction • fully sprinklered • the 2nd storey floor assemblies and their supports will be constructed as fire separations having 1-hour fire-resistance ratings, and • unoccupied roof assemblies will not be required to provide a fire-resistance rating.

In accordance with Article 3.2.2.16., a roof assembly in a building up to 2-storeys in building height is permitted to be of heavy timber construction regardless of the building area or type of construction required, provided the building is sprinklered throughout. Further, where the roof assembly is permitted to be of heavy timber construction, structural members in the storey immediately below the roof assembly are permitted to be of heavy timber construction. As such, the roof assembly of the addition and structural members in the storey below will be constructed of heavy timber construction. It should be noted the existing areas have already been designed/constructed to comply with these requirements. Site Plan

ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS

Preliminary review (2009.12.16) with the code consultant, Gage-Babcock and AssocAssociates, iates, hhasas iidentifieddentified tthehe ffollowingollowing liklikelyely aalternativelternative sosolutionlutionrrequirementsequirements: Building Section at Project Boxes • Exit protection: sprinkler water curtains may be required at the 2 exits on the first storey that are located at the south side of the building beneath the exterior stairs, due to exposure of the second storey exits above from the first storey fire compartment. The water curtains would comprise tightly-spaced sprinkler heads on the interior of the glazing.

• Combustible content increased from 10% to 20% at first storey corridor ceilings: suspended wood slat ceilings (constructed of dimension lumber), where present at the first storey corridor ceilings, will require clear coat low VOC fire retardant treatment combined with increased sprinkler flows.
