AIDA CRUISES: Just in case you had to know, Aida has beat Branson’s Virgin Cruises by offering the very first tattoo parlor to hit the high seas. It is aboard the Mein Schiff 2 and already popular with mostly younger German cruisers. Virgin will go a step further – they’ll also offer a piercing salon on its new cruise liners. Page 1 ALONG THE PROMENADE: Celebrities – royalty, politicians, but especially Hollywood stars – added to the glamour, even the sheer fascination of the old liners. They were all but regulars on the liners. But photos of them are rare. Some were destroyed, others simply discarded. But here’s Rita Hayworth, arriving at Pier 86 aboard the United States. The Captain is seen below, just last winter, before the re-opened QE2 out in Dubai. We had a thorough read of Union-Castle Line: The Post-War Liners, published by Ships Illustrated and written by the late Peter Newall. Wonderful photos & fine text of such great liners on the UK-Africa run such as the Edinburgh Castle, Braemar Castle, Pendennis Castle, Windsor Castle (seen below) and then the last of them (1961), the Transvaal Castle. -

There is no better value.” (Micky Arison, Chairman and CEO Carnival Corporation, 2004) If you remember Captain Stubing, cruise director Julie McCoy, bartender Isaac Washington, and yeoman-purser “Gopher” Smith of the 1970s television series The Love Boat, you probably have the right age to take a cruise.1 You shall not be alone; in 2005, about 11.1 million people will join you on a cruise. Economic research documents the tremendous growth of tourism in general and particularly the cruise industry after the 1960s. Worldwide employment in tourism in 2001 was 207 million jobs or 8 percent of all jobs. About 11 percent (or 3.3 trillion US Dollars) of global GDP is contributed by the tourist industry and some 698 million tourists generated this economic result. While tourism used to be located in Europe and the USA (in 1950 the top 15 tourist attractions were all located in Europe and the USA), today tourism is a global industry with multinational enterprises.2 Tourism is an exceptionally dynamic industry with businesses constantly inventing new attractions. -

The legendary QUEEN ELIZABETH 2 arriving in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida in 1979 (Pat Dacey) This educational film produced by National Geographic in association with WQED in Pittsburgh was filmed in 1979 and released in 1980. The film documents a westbound crossing in the QE2 with both crew and passenger interviews, footage from public spaces and working areas of the ship including the bridge and engine room. Also shown is a rare glimpse of her dramatic unassisted docking in New York City by Captain Ridley during a tugboat strike and a commentary about her reduced six-hour turnaround. The film, for which Frank Braynard served as historical advisor, provides rare insight and footage of the QE2 during a period where her future remained uncertain, as rising fuel costs and the competition from air travel challenged the time-honored tradition of crossing the Atlantic by ship. Through archival film footage, the film also examines the role that the ocean liner has played as the "Atlantic Ferry" in times of peace and war, with a discussion of the immigrant trade, the Blue Riband and the superliners of the times. Historical footage captures the NORMANDIE, QUEEN MARY, QUEEN ELIZABETH as well as other liners plying their trade. The film is 50 minutes long and will be shown in its entirety followed by a discussion on the screening as well as recent developments with QE2’s restoration and its grand opening as a floating hotel this October (limited opening on April 18, 2018). -
