  • STOCK CERTIFICATES Information Compiled by Dr
STOCK CERTIFICATES Information Compiled by Dr. Paul Goodwin Stock certificates in their own right reflect a slice of the history of the times in which they were produced. In this sense they are useful as a striking visual primary source. The following certificates, in addition to the images shown on them, show the consolidation and mergers of companies that in some cases created monopolies. They also, by extension, illustrate lines of communication and navigation. United Fruit Company This certificate is an excellent starting point for a discussion of the conflicted history of the United Fruit Company. Founded in 1899 as a merger of two other companies, United Fruit was instrumental in bringing attention to American and later global consumers the delights and benefits of the banana. It converted thousands of acres of land in Central America (primarily Guatemala) to the production of the fruit, built railroads and port facilities, and maintained its own “Great White Fleet” of “banana boats” (that also carried mail). It also meddled in the internal affairs of Central American governments, was the target of anti-trust legislation, and cited for poor labor relations. It may well have been the source of the term “Banana Republic”. And who can forget “Chiquita Banana”? The company was also the target of Latin American literary figures such as Pablo Neruda, Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Miguel Angel Asturias. An examination of the stock certificate reveals the following: In the medallion on the left banana bunches and trees and a section of railroad. In the medallion on the right one of the ships of the “Great White Fleet”.

The & MILLERGRAM by Bill Miller billmilleratsea.com Summer 2019 The Millergram is designed and formatted by Tim Noble, our good friend from Melbourne, Australia and a former navigating officer with the Blue Star Line. AIDA CRUISES: Just in case you had to know, Aida has beat Branson’s Virgin Cruises by offering the very first tattoo parlor to hit the high seas. It is aboard the Mein Schiff 2 and already popular with mostly younger German cruisers. Virgin will go a step further – they’ll also offer a piercing salon on its new cruise liners. Page 1 ALONG THE PROMENADE: Celebrities – royalty, politicians, but especially Hollywood stars – added to the glamour, even the sheer fascination of the old liners. They were all but regulars on the liners. But photos of them are rare. Some were destroyed, others simply discarded. But here’s Rita Hayworth, arriving at Pier 86 aboard the United States. The date is 1955. Page 2 BOOKS: Happily & generously, Capt Aseem Hashmi – master of the Queen Mary 2 – has contributed a fine foreword to our new book celebrating 50 years of the QE2. The Captain is seen below, just last winter, before the re-opened QE2 out in Dubai. We had a thorough read of Union-Castle Line: The Post-War Liners, published by Ships Illustrated and written by the late Peter Newall. Wonderful photos & fine text of such great liners on the UK-Africa run such as the Edinburgh Castle, Braemar Castle, Pendennis Castle, Windsor Castle (seen below) and then the last of them (1961), the Transvaal Castle.

The & MILLERGRAM by Bill Miller billmilleratsea.com Spring 2016 The Millergram is designed and formatted by Tim Noble, our good friend from Melbourne, Australia and a former navigating officer with the Blue Star Line. BOOKS: More scribbling! I am penning yet another new book these days, Maritime Royalty: The Queen Mary & the Cunard Queens, timed for the 80th anniversary (May 1936) of the beloved Queen Mary's maiden crossing from Southampton to New York. It will be a slightly larger book than usual, more of a glossy commemorative. It will be published by Fonthill Media over in the UK. Some sad news! Mainmast Books over in the UK is closing down as of Apr 1st. Mainmast were a longtime seller of maritime books – certainly one of the very best, in fact – and a highpoint for books on liners. They had a huge and diverse monthly list. Competition with internet book selling cast the decisive blow. A great loss! CARGO SHIPPING: Caused by the likes of downturns in the Chinese economy, worldwide cargo shipping is in a slump. Hundreds of containerships are currently laid-up, awaiting cargo. Meanwhile, Denmark's Maersk Line – the biggest containership operator in the world plus other, vast maritime holdings – has seen its profits crash by over 80%. In response, Maersk has sacked 4,000 employees, both ashore and afloat, and also called South Korean shipbuilders to cancel the building of some projected 20,000-capacity containerships. Page 1 CARNIVAL: Italy's Fincantieri shipbuilders has joined forces with Chinese shipyards near Shanghai to build the first generation of Carnival cruise ships especially for the Chinese market.
