CONTACT: Sally Andrews PHONE: 800-637-5029 EMAIL: [email protected] Holland America Line’s Prinsendam to Leave the Fleet July 1, 2019 Vessel to transfer to German cruise line Phoenix Reisen Seattle, Wash., July 2, 2018 — Holland America Line announced that Prinsendam has been sold and will leave its fleet July 1, 2019, and transfer to the German cruise company Phoenix Reisen. Following the sale, the 37,983-ton, 835-guest Prinsendam is being chartered back to Holland America Line to continue sailing its planned voyages through July 1, 2019. Prinsendam’s itineraries from July 1, 2019, onward are scheduled to be assimilated by Rotterdam, Volendam and Veendam. Holland America Line is reaching out to booked guests and their travel professionals to re-accommodate guests on these cruises. “Prinsendam has proudly served our guests since 2002, and we share in the fondness that many of our loyal cruisers have for this special ship,” said Orlando Ashford, president of Holland America Line. “As we look to the future and focus on delivering the programming and innovations that our guests are asking for, we remain focused on exceeding guest expectations on every cruise and will continue to offer the unique itineraries that Prinsendam sailed on our other, smaller ships.” Prinsendam was built in 1988 as Royal Viking Sun for Royal Viking Line. The ship was operated by Cunard Line from 1994 through 1998 and then transferred to Seabourn Cruise Line, where it became Seabourn Sun in 1999. In 2002 the ship joined the Holland America Line fleet and was renamed Prinsendam. -

BOOKS: More scribbling! I am penning yet another new book these days, Maritime Royalty: The Queen Mary & the Cunard Queens, timed for the 80th anniversary (May 1936) of the beloved Queen Mary's maiden crossing from Southampton to New York. It will be a slightly larger book than usual, more of a glossy commemorative. It will be published by Fonthill Media over in the UK. Some sad news! Mainmast Books over in the UK is closing down as of Apr 1st. Mainmast were a longtime seller of maritime books – certainly one of the very best, in fact – and a highpoint for books on liners. They had a huge and diverse monthly list. Competition with internet book selling cast the decisive blow. A great loss! CARGO SHIPPING: Caused by the likes of downturns in the Chinese economy, worldwide cargo shipping is in a slump. Hundreds of containerships are currently laid-up, awaiting cargo. Meanwhile, Denmark's Maersk Line – the biggest containership operator in the world plus other, vast maritime holdings – has seen its profits crash by over 80%. In response, Maersk has sacked 4,000 employees, both ashore and afloat, and also called South Korean shipbuilders to cancel the building of some projected 20,000-capacity containerships. Page 1 CARNIVAL: Italy's Fincantieri shipbuilders has joined forces with Chinese shipyards near Shanghai to build the first generation of Carnival cruise ships especially for the Chinese market. -

The rest of the networking-information is camouflaged by the yellow-pages industry, which is facing a real prospect of extinction. The economic downturn is sending the already ailing business into a tailspin. The yellow-pages publishers basically give back in one downturn what took seven years to grow! Cruise Ship Financing It is more than a directory as it unveils the shift in the ship financing sector and uncovers how fast the traditional financiers to the cruise shipping industry fade away and perverted forms of financing are gaining ground. Admittedly there are some traditional banks around, which can maintain their market position through a blend of sober judgements, judicious risk management and solid relationships. -

(Bob Allen) As the 100th Anniversary of the Norwegian America Line approached in early 2013, it was announced that the last survivor of the line – SAGA RUBY, ex-VISTAFJORD - was due to be retired during the first week of 2014. It was an odd coincidence that SAGA RUBY’s final season would be during the NAL centenary year. PONY Porthole Editor Bob Allen will take us on a nostalgic voyage through the history of the Norwegian America Line passenger fleet. Despite its fame and superb reputation, the entire passenger fleet consisted of just eight vessels, two of which sailed for less than five years. We will explore BERGENSFJORDS and OSLOFJORDS that were built for different generations of travellers, but shared the high standards for passenger comfort and reliability for which Norwegian America Line was renowned. We will see how the centenary was remembered in Norway, and there will be a focus on the final two ships of the fleet – SAGAFJORD and VISTAFJORD – which enjoyed long careers for Norwegian America Line, Cunard Line and Saga Cruises. Operated by the British line Cruise & Maritime Voyages, the ship is the only liner in service built for transatlantic crossings (other than QUEEN MARY 2), and one of the oldest passenger ships afloat. During a career spanning 48 years, she has been a Russian transatlantic liner, an Australian-based cruise ship, a deluxe destination-intensive vessel specializing in Far Eastern and Antarctic itineraries, and a German-market cruise ship. We will see images of this classic liner, as well as fascinating ports of call on a “Great Waterways of Europe” cruise along the Thames, Seine and Scheldt Rivers, and the North Sea Canal. MARCH, 2017 VOLUME XXXIV, # 3 FIRST CLASS CARGO by Bill Miller Friday, March 31, 2017 – 6:00 PM At the Community Church Assembly Room, 40 East 35th Street, Manhattan They were a unique and once very popular type of ship: the passenger-cargo liners. More than 12-berth, passenger-carrying freighters, some of these combo ships, as they were often dubbed, carried as few as 30 passengers; others, as many as 400. They offered comfortable quarters, many amenities, and one-class accommodation; but they still were not classified as actual passenger liners. Belonging to well-known ship owners such as American Export, Blue Funnel, Farrell, Grace, and Zim Lines, their final heyday began just after the Second World War, in the late 1940s, and continued until the 1960s. But in the end, as air travel and containerization took hold, they were no longer practical or profitable. One of Bill Miller's latest books is First Class Cargo, which covers many of these passenger-cargo ships. So climb aboard as we sail to the likes of Marseilles and Melbourne, Hong Kong and Durban. The cargo is loaded and the passengers are aboard! Combination passenger-cargo liners once connected the entire globe with first class passenger services. The rhythm remains elevated, with 18 ships per week. In number of ships to be demolished as well as tonnage, India, with 120 ships (42%), remains destination number 1 before Bangladesh with 55 (24%), Pakistan with 25 (11%), and China with 23 (9%). The accumulated demolition will permit the recycling of nearly 2 million tons of metal. The crisis is over ! The prices offered by the demolition yards have significantly increased and continue to increase in the yards of the Indian subcontinent, but also in China; they have reached $400, even $500 for oil tankers and more for ships containing stainless steel. -

The mini-cruises which meet Covid-19 guidelines as they remain within UK waters will feature entertainment -with multiple layers of health and safety measures. The Disney Magic cruise ship plans to sail mostly two and three night voyages, as well as limited four night round-trips from Tilbury, Newcastle, Liverpool and Southampton. Guests will remain aboard the Disney Magic throughout the sailing and favourite Disney stories, characters and entertainment will come to life during the cruises. Disney Magic at Sea staycation sailings are expected to go on sale in April 2021 for sailings this summer, pending the issuance of U.K. government guidelines and authorisations. (Valarie D’Elia) Valarie D’Elia was born into a family travel business dating back to 1902, when her great-grandfather booked his friends and relatives from Italy to Ellis Island in steerage class on transatlantic ocean liners as part of the immigration wave. Four generations later, Val took her first cruise on Holland America’s 1938-built Nieuw Amsterdam when she could barely see over the banisters of the gangplank and sailed on the original Queen Mary to Nassau with her travel agency parents. To date, she has taken at least a hundred cruises and is the caretaker of a treasure trove of steamship memorabilia and other souvenirs relating to her family’s travel business. Val has parlayed her family background into a career as a travel journalist, with a century’s worth of perspective. She began her broadcast career as a radio news anchor in Miami while a junior at the University of Miami, then went on to anchor and report for several radio stations in the New York metropolitan area before earning her master's degree from the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism. For nine years from January 1997, she was the talk show host of The Travel Show on WOR Radio, providing travel expertise on a nationally syndicated show airing in 100 markets.
