652 Loader, “The Pleasing and the Awesome,” OTE 24/3 (2011): 652-667 The Pleasing and the Awesome: On the Beauty of Humans in the Old Testament JAMES ALFRED LOADER (UNIVERSITY OF VIENNA AND UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH AFRICA) ABSTRACT Profiting from the OT research programme held at the University of South Africa during August 2010, this paper further investigates dif- ferent aspects of the concept of beauty in the Old Testament (OT). The use of the concept of human beauty and the beauty of human achievement is investigated in a broad variety of text types. Repre- sentative texts are examined where the concept occurs as a literary motif. It is found that human beauty, both erotic and non-erotic, as well as the metaphorical use of the concept are intertwined with de- scriptions of awe not only in the terminology, but also in the actual use to which it is put in texts from practically all genres. It is con- cluded that a coherent aesthetic is found in OT texts from different periods, which remains stable despite diverging historical and theo- logical contexts. The contours emerging from the texts seem to square with the Kantian concept of the beautiful and Goethe’s view of the awesome. A INTRODUCTION In August 2010 I delivered a paper on a facet of my exploration of the concept of beauty in the OT.1 The lively discussion prompted the idea that not only a basic survey,2 but several papers are called for in which the topic is examined from various angles each in its own right. -

Zohar1 Published online: 7 June 2019 © Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2019 Abstract Little is known scientifcally about eating disorders (EDs) in the Haredi (Jewish ultra-Orthodox) community. This paper aims to describe Haredi culture, review available peer-reviewed research on EDs in the Haredi community and discuss pos- sible risk and protective factors for these disorders in a culturally informed way. A literature search for 2009–2019 yielded 180 references of which only nine were stud- ies on ED in the Haredi community. We describe these and use them as a basis for discussion of possible risk and protective factors for ED in Haredi women. Risk fac- tors may include the centrality of food, poverty, rigid dress codes, the importance of thinness for dating and marriage, high demands from women, selfessness and early marriage and high expectations from women. Protective factors may include faith, Jewish laws governing eating and food that encourage gratitude and mindful eat- ing, and body covering as part of modesty laws that discourage objectifcation. Ways of overcoming the current barriers to research in the Haredi community should be sought to advance ED prevention and treatment in this population. The poetical books, especially, are much concerned with the acts of righteous and unrighteous persons. Qoheleth, in Ecclesiastes, declares that "there is nothing better ... than to rejoice and to do good in one's lifetime" (3: 12, NASB). In fact, he concludes the book with the warning that "God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil" (12:14). -

“DISCOVERING THE UNREAD BESTSELLER” Week 18: Sunday, March 25, 2012 ECCLESIASTES – “IT’S ______ ABOUT _____” BACKGROUND & TITLE The Hebrew title, “___________” is a rare word found only in the Book of Ecclesiastes. It comes from a word meaning - “____________”; in fact, it’s talking about a “_________” or “_________”. The Septuagint used the Greek word “__________” as its title for the Book. Derived from the word “ekklesia” (meaning “assembly, congregation or church”) the title again (in the Greek) can simply be taken to mean - “_________/_________”. AUTHORSHIP It is commonly believed and accepted that _________authored this Book. Within the Book, the author refers to himself as “the son of ______” (Ecclesiastes 1:1) and then later on (in Ecclesiastes 1:12) as “____ over _____ in Jerusalem”. Solomon’s extensive wisdom; his accomplishments, and his immense wealth (all of which were God-given) give further credence to his work. Outside the Book, _______ tradition also points to Solomon as author, but it also suggests that the text may have undergone some later editing by _______ or possibly ____. SNAPSHOT OF THE BOOK The Book of Ecclesiastes describes Solomon’s ______ for meaning, purpose and satisfaction in life. The Book divides into three different sections - (1) the _____ that _______ is ___________ - (Ecclesiastes 1:1-11); (2) the ______ that everything is meaningless (Ecclesiastes 1:12-6:12); and, (3) the ______ or direction on how we should be living in a world filled with ______ pursuits and meaninglessness (Ecclesiastes 7:1-12:14). That last section is important because the Preacher/Teacher ultimately sees the emptiness and futility of all the stuff people typically strive for _____ from God – p______ – p_______ – p________ - and p________. -

(Tanhuma, Va-ethanan 3) This midrash highlights the multidimensional nature of the Prayer and names a variety of expressive means alongside the Prayer's verbal aspect. It is this book's aim to portray the nonverbal components of the Prayer - physical gestures, attire, and vocality - and to demonstrate their impor- tance for, and integrality to, the prayer-act. -

Negative Shocks and Mass Persecutions: Evidence from the Black Death Remi Jedwab and Noel D. Johnson and Mark Koyama⇤ April 16, 2018 Abstract We study the Black Death pogroms to shed light on the factors determining when a minority group will face persecution. In theory, negative shocks increase the likelihood that minorities are persecuted. But, as shocks become more severe, the persecution probability decreases if there are economic complementarities between majority and minority groups. The effects of shocks on persecutions are thus ambiguous. We compile city-level data on Black Death mortality and Jewish persecutions. At an aggregate level, scapegoating increases the probability of a persecution. However, cities which experienced higher plague mortality rates were less likely to persecute. Furthermore, for a given mortality shock, persecutions were less likely in cities where Jews played an important economic role and more likely in cities where people were more inclined to believe conspiracy theories that blamed the Jews for the plague. Our results have contemporary relevance given interest in the impact of economic, environmental and epidemiological shocks on conflict. Kenneth Hamilton THE FALSE GLITTER OF THE GOLDEN MEAN A cYNICAL OPINION holds that the great thinkers of the past had but one thing in common-their thoughts were wrong. It may be more nearly true to say that all great thinkers tend to encourage wrong thinking in us. For we are inclined to take over the phrases they have made famous, imagining that we have been given magic formulae to solve our problems without having to do any thinking ourselves. A case in point is Aristotle's doctrine of the Mean. This doctrine has a certain cogency in the context of classical ethics: that, and no more than that. Yet today it is often lifted out of its context and put forward as a general principle both simple and authoritative. The Good (it is urged) stands in a middle place; and therefore any~ thing which can be shown to occupy a middle place must be a Good Thing. Obviously, Aristotle cannot be blamed for later distortions of his doctrine. And the doctrine of the Mean was not entirely his invention. Tracing virtue to a "middle way" between extremes was almost a habit of the Greeks, as we learn from Plato, who tells us of the inscription "Nothing in excess" in the temple at Delphi. Nevertheless, Aristotle's account of the Mean in the Nichomachean Ethics is de cisive in the history of this particular tradition. The person who "loves well the Golden Mean" (the phrase is from Horace) may not have the Ethics directly in mind, but the argument of that treatise will lie at the back of what he believes. -
