Jay-Z Unplugged Jay-Z Unplugged http://elsegundousd.com/eshs/bayeagle/entertainment/january/eaton.htm Jay-Z Unplugged As Shawn Corey Carter, otherwise known as Jay-Z, grew up in Brooklyn, he dreamed of having a rap career. He probably never thought of being on MTV's Unplugged. His latest CD is a recording of his performance in November for the MTV special. It's basically a greatest hits collection from the past few years of his career. Jay-Z's career all began in 1996 when he created his own imprint, Roc-A-Fella Records, with Damon Dash and Kareem "Biggs" Burke. Then he scored a distributing deal with Priority Records. Later that year, he released his debut album, Reasonable Doubt. That CD, as well as Unplugged, includes his hit single "Ain't No N****." They both also feature "Can't Knock The Hustle," featuring Mary J. Blige. His sophomore album, Vol. 1: In My Lifetime, wasn't a commercial success and Unplugged doesn't feature any singles from that CD. His third CD, Vol 2: Hard Knock Life, was host to many great singles. "Hard Knock Life (The Ghetto Anthem)," "Jigga What, Jigga Who," and "Can I Get A…" were off of this album. Considering they are three of Jay-Z's biggest hits, they are all included on Unplugged. His fourth album, Vol. 3: Life & Times of s. Carter, was experimental and didn't sit well with his fans. "Big Pimpin'" was the only hit single off of that album. He made a great comeback when he released his fifth CD, The Dynasty: Roc La Familia. The first single, "I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)" was just one of the Neptune's- produced hits out at that time. One half of the Neptunes, Pharrell Williams, even showed up on Unplugged when Jay-Z performed that song. His sixth album, The Blueprint, dropped on September 11, 2001. Due to the tragedy that occurred that day, his first week sales weren't as large as they could have been. The first single, "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)" was a huge radio hit. "Girls, Girls, Girls" was also a hit single. The latest single, "Jigga that N****," is becoming very popular at the moment. All of these songs appear on Unplugged. Other tracks that are on his latest CD are "Takeover," "Song Cry," and "Heart of the City (Ain't No Love)." Mary J. Blige also performs her single "Family Affair" after doing a duet with Jay-Z. I really enjoyed this CD because it includes all of my favorite Jay-Z songs. At first I was reluctant to buy it because I already had all of the songs on it, but when I heard a few of the tracks, I realized that they sound different because they were done a new style. The songs were performed with a fiery Roots rhythm. He also had a string quartet behind him on songs such as "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)." The mix of his street lyrics and the flute, bass, and electric piano is what makes the CD fascinating because it's so different from Jay-Z's usual style. His commentary also adds an interesting feature to the album. He starts the CD off by welcoming everyone to his poetry reading. Overall, this is a really great CD. Even though it's different from his usual style, I'm sure most Jay-Z fans would like this album. If you get 1 of 1 6/30/2008 4:46 PM.

PERFORMED IDENTITIES: HEAVY METAL MUSICIANS BETWEEN 1984 AND 1991 Bradley C. Klypchak A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2007 Committee: Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Dr. John Makay Graduate Faculty Representative Dr. Ron E. Shields Dr. Don McQuarie © 2007 Bradley C. Klypchak All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Dr. Jeffrey A. Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

  • The Life & Rhymes of Jay-Z, an Historical Biography
ABSTRACT Title of Dissertation: THE LIFE & RHYMES OF JAY-Z, AN HISTORICAL BIOGRAPHY: 1969-2004 Omékongo Dibinga, Doctor of Philosophy, 2015 Dissertation directed by: Dr. Barbara Finkelstein, Professor Emerita, University of Maryland College of Education. Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore the life and ideas of Jay-Z. It is an effort to illuminate the ways in which he managed the vicissitudes of life as they were inscribed in the political, economic cultural, social contexts and message systems of the worlds which he inhabited: the social ideas of class struggle, the fact of black youth disempowerment, educational disenfranchisement, entrepreneurial possibility, and the struggle of families to buffer their children from the horrors of life on the streets. Jay-Z was born into a society in flux in 1969. By the time Jay-Z reached his 20s, he saw the art form he came to love at the age of 9—hip hop— become a vehicle for upward mobility and the acquisition of great wealth through the sale of multiplatinum albums, massive record deal signings, and the omnipresence of hip-hop culture on radio and television. In short, Jay-Z lived at a time where, if he could survive his turbulent environment, he could take advantage of new terrains of possibility. This dissertation seeks to shed light on the life and development of Jay-Z during a time of great challenge and change in America and beyond. Well-known for his versatility and professionalism, he is equally comfortable in a multitude of styles, from R & B to rock to pop to electronic to bebop to Latin to Brazilian to New Age. But Sammy is much more than a mere accompanist: when Sammy plays percussion he tells a story, taking the listener on a journey, and amazing audiences with both his flamboyant technique and his subtle nuance and phrasing. Sammy Figueroa is now considered to be the most likely candidate to inherit the mantles of Mongo Santamaria and Ray Barretto as one of the world’s great congueros. Sammy Figueroa was born in the Bronx, New York, the son of the well-known romantic singer Charlie Figueroa. His first professional experience came at the age of 18, while attending the University of Puerto Rico, with the band of bassist Bobby Valentin. During this time he co-founded the innovative Brazilian/Latin group Raices, which broke ground for many of today’s fusion bands. Raices was signed to a contract with Atlantic Records and Sammy returned to New York, where he was discovered by the great flautist Herbie Mann. Sammy immediately became one of the music world’s hottest players and within a year he had appeared with John McLaughlin, the Brecker Brothers and many of the world’s most famous pop artists. Instead, he claims that nearly two decades ago, Dash described the Logo's concept to him, and he then arranged for three other men to draw elements of the Logo, directed their work, and combined the elements into the Logo. He alleges that Defendants owe him royalties for the use of the Logo, under the tenns of a written contract he entered into with Dash; however, Plaintiff claims he has since lost 1 Defendant Burke is pro se and has not appeared in this action to date.
