A Special Issue on Botswana Notes and Records’ Golden Jubilee Volume in Honour of Sir Ketumile Masire ‘The Rock Star that Got Stage Fright at Auction’: The Political Economy of Marketing the Historic Lesedi La Rona Diamond Christian John Makgala∗ and Maitseo Bolaane§ One hundred years’ worth of history is not something you can change with a single auction Lukas Lundin Abstract In 1905 the largest diamond in history measuring 3,106-carat was discovered at Premier Mine near Pretoria in South Africa, and was presented to King Edward VII of Great Britain for his 66th birthday on 9 November 1907. After 110 years the second largest diamond in history was discovered by the Canadian company Lucara at its Karowe Mine in Botswana in November 2015, and the gemstone became ‘Botswana’s pride’. The 1,109-carat diamond, which came to be called ‘Lesedi La Rona’, brought great excitement globally as the news of its discovery allegedly received more than one billion hits in the Internet in just two weeks. The diamond went on a global road show with promotional stops in Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai, Geneva, New York, and London. This massive publicity was expected to make the stone the most expensive gem ever sold. The sale of the rough diamond in an open auction in London was also hoped to significantly ramp up the global diamond market which had slumped badly at the time. However, this paper observes that the anticipated hefty price for the historic gem and its attempted sale at an open auction as opposed to traditional secretive operation rendered the stone problematic to the diamond industry in general and to Lucara in particular. -

The project describes how I was introduced into McQueen‟s work, followed by a biography on the designer. As people dream of a world beyond their existence, McQueen made his dreams a reality through his collections of work. One designer who McQueen worked with and admired was Japanese designer Koji Tatsuno. Tatsuno‟s thoughts on the designer were, “I guess I did influence his work, particularly in making fabrics three- dimensional, but also in not accepting the limitations of conventional „fashion.‟” My discovery on McQueen started when I attended his 2011 memorial exhibit called “Savage Beauty” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. The person who encouraged me to go to the exhibit was my cousin, Richard Monroy. Leane, who helped with the design of Princess Beatrice’s engagement ring, said: “I was honoured to be asked to be an ambassador for the Foundation. I am keen to contribute through my own experience and give support to the work of the Foundation that brings support, awareness, knowledge and a world of expertise to help combat this deadly illness. “When my father was diagnosed with Throat Cancer in December 2018, the University College Hospital London (UCLH) Macmillan Centre’s action was amazingly fast, albeit a whirlwind, of doctors, speech therapists, dieticians and surgeons. “This was followed by an array of instructions, procedures and medications. Our lives were turned upside down, there so many advisors and they were all incredibly supportive, but it was also very daunting at a time of fear, worry and uncertainty.” During his own research into his father’s illness, Shaun reached out to the Throat Cancer Foundation’s chief executive Jamie Rae, who has also had his own personal experience with throat cancer like Shaun’s father. -

The Pink Star--the largest internally-flawless fancy-vivid pink diamond ever graded by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA)--was bought after about 5 minutes of bidding by New York-based diamond cutter Isaac Wolf. After the sale Wolf renamed the diamond the Pink Dream. The 59.60 carat Pink Star diamond made history at Sotheby's Geneva, selling for $83 million on November 13, 2013. In the world of natural stones, the position of pink is invariably high due to its extreme rarity. That is why the appearance of large diamonds of this color at an auction traditionally causes a big stir. In Russia, ALROSA has cut and is going to auction a unique 14.83-carat purple-pink diamond. There was nothing like it in Russia or elsewhere in the world: the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) says that it is the largest flawless or internally flawless diamond in its color ever certified by the GIA.
