Hegelianism presents one possible path into modern European or “Continental” philosophy, which we can under- stand as a series of complex responses to Hegel. In what follows, I show how Hegelian and anti-Hegelian currents of thought shaped some of the most significant movements in twentieth-century European philosophy, from existentialism, Marxism and phenomenology to crit- ical theory and poststructuralism. I foreground the Hegelian themes of the unhappy consciousness, the master/slave dialectic and the struggle for recognition, which have proven very fertile for German critical theory as well as for postwar French philosophy. I also consider the problem of modernity, theories of recognition, and the deconstruction of dialectic, important themes that are all profoundly indebted to Hegelian thought. On the other hand, Hegel has had a largely negative impact on the development of analytic philosophy; fortunately, this has recently begun to change with the emergence of “analytic neo- Hegelianism” (see Rockmore 2005). While I deal primarily with what I loosely call “German” and “French” appropriations of Hegelian thought, I also make some brief remarks on analytic neo-Hegelianism in my concluding discussion. The book is structured into three parts. It begins with a brief introduction to key elements of Hegel’s philosophy, and an over- view of some of the main figures in the competing “Right” and “Left” Hegelian schools. I suggest that two of the most famous critiques of Hegelian thought – Kierkegaard’s existentialism and Marx’s materialism preface and acknowledgements vii UHA01 30/04/2007 10:43 AM Page viii – represent the defining poles of subsequent Hegelian and anti-Hegelian movements. These existentialist and Marxist currents comprise a con- ceptual matrix that can help us understand developments in twentieth- century Hegelian and anti-Hegelian thought. The second part takes up these themes by looking at the contrasting critiques of Hegel presented by Marxist philosopher Georg Lukács and existential phenomenologist Martin Heidegger. Lukács’s theme of reification and Heidegger’s critique of Hegel as a Cartesian metaphysi- cian set the stage for the appropriation of Hegelian themes in German critical theory and for the critique of Hegelianism in French poststruc- turalism. I then consider various Hegelian critiques of modernity – of modern reason, society, culture and conceptions of subjectivity – in the critical theory tradition, focusing on Adorno and Horkheimer’s Dialectic of Enlightenment and on Adorno’s negative dialectics. This is followed by an examination of the role of Hegelian themes in the work of Jürgen Habermas and Axel Honneth, who strongly emphasize the Hegelian concept of recognition for developing a critical theory of intersubjectivity and of modern society. In the third part, I turn to the rich tradition of Hegelianism within twentieth-century French philosophy, beginning with the existentialist Hegelianism of Jean Wahl, Alexandre Kojève’s Heideggerian-Marxist reading, and Jean Hyppolite’s “hybrid” interpretation, which drew upon both existentialist and Marxist impulses. I then explore the ways in which French existentialism and phenomenology were both marked by a significant engagement with Hegelian thought. Here I focus upon Jean-Paul Sartre’s existentialist critique of Hegel, Simone de Beauvoir’s ambiguous engagement with Hegelian themes in The Second Sex, and conclude with a discussion of Merleau-Ponty’s account of Hegelian existentialism and the question of a post-Hegelian “hyperdialectics”. Finally, I consider the radical critique of Hegelianism articulated by French poststructuralist thinkers Gilles Deleuze and Jacques Derrida, whose attempts to construct a post-Hegelian philosophy of difference involve a complex critical relationship with Hegel. Can Hegelianism be overcome through an anti-dialectical conception of difference? Or does it require a complex “deconstruction” of its scope and limits? Can the philosophy of difference construct an alternative to Hegelian dialectics? In conclusion, I gesture briefly towards contemporary thinkers (such as Judith Butler and Slavoj Zˇ izˇek), whose work productively appropriates Hegelian themes while also integrating the critiques of Hegel found in critical theory and in poststructuralism. Their work, viii understanding hegelianism UHA01 30/04/2007 10:43 AM Page ix along with the Hegel renaissance in contemporary “post-analytic” phi- losophy, demonstrates the fertility of Hegelianism for contemporary thought. The argument developed in the book as a whole is that the conflict between much contemporary French and German thought derives from conflicting responses to Hegel: French Hegelianism emphasized the unhappy consciousness, the master/slave dialectic, and attempted to transform Hegelian dialectics into a philosophy of differ- ence; German Hegelianism underscored Hegel’s theory of modernity, his defence of an expanded theory of rationality, and his thematizing of recognition as part of a theory of social intersubjectivity. I suggest that a proper understanding of the plural and conflicting nature of Hegelianism might clear a path for a productive rapprochement between these two often conflicting perspectives defining modern European philosophy. China is officially Marxist, and Marx thus inspires this dream in his assigned status as the “official guide” to the ongoing Chinese Revolution. This paper will focus on the crucial relation between Hegel and Chinese Marxism. Marx is a key Hegelian, critical of, but strongly dependent on, Hegel. Since the Chinese Dream is not Hegelian, but rather anti-Hegelian, it is unlikely, as I will be arguing, to be realized in a recognizably Marxian form. The most influential 20th century interpretation of De Trinitate holds that Augustine moves from a theological examination of the nature of the Trinity based on scripture to a philosophical investigation based on the structure of the human mind. This interpretation has led to the misconceptions that Augustine espouses a form of natural theology and separates theological doctrine from the concerns of the practical life. This thesis shows that De Trinitate is unified around the methodological rule that only the mind that loves God is capable of knowing him. This means, first, that Augustine's procedure is improperly characterized as natural theology; and, second, that, in making love a prerequisite for, and means to, knowledge of God, the ethical question of the ordering of love is inseparable from doctrinal concerns. This thesis shows that De Trinitate offers a coherent and compelling moral ontology in which the perceived tensions in Augustine'S theology of love can be reconciled.

In 1886, Friedrich Engels wrote a perfectly mediocre book, Ludwig Feuerbach and the Outcome of Classical German Philosophy, which nevertheless managed to raise a fascinating and important question that is still being debated today: how should we go about evaluating the legacy of German Idealism following the mid-nineteenth century breakdown of the Hegelian system? For Engels, the answer was relatively simple: the rightful heir of classical German philosophy was Marx’s doctrine of historical materialism. But, in truth, Engels’ response was merely one of many possible approaches. Nor would it be much of an exaggeration to claim that, in the twentieth century, there is hardly a philosopher worth reading who has not sought to define him or herself via a confrontation with the legacy of Kant and Hegel. Classical German Philosophy – Kant, Fichte, Hegel, and Schelling – has bequeathed a rich legacy of reflection on the fundamental problems of epistemology, ontology and aesthetics. Even contemporary thinkers who claim to have transcended it (e.g., poststructuralists such as Foucault and Derrida) cannot help but make reference to it in order to validate their post- philosophical standpoints and claims. Our approach to this very rich material will combine a reading of the canonical texts of German Idealism (e.g., Kant and Hegel) with a sustained and complementary focus on major twentieth-century thinkers who have sought to establish their originality via a critical reading of Hegel and his heirs: Alexandre Kojève, Martin Heidegger, Michel Foucault, Theodor Adorno, and Jürgen Habermas.

Marquette University, 2013 From where do political reformers and radicals come who are willing and prepared to challenge the status quo? Where are people formed who are capable of initiating change within a political system? Some worry belief in transcendence closes off authentic political engagement and processes of transformation. Others think that a transcendent orientation is the only means to protect and promote a more free and just society. Some see a positive commitment to transcendence as inimical to democratic practices, while others see such a commitment as indispensible for such a project. These general issues concern transcendence, immanence, and subjectivity as they bear on the question of political transformation. Explaining the differences between these fundamental orientations prompts an investigation of the philosophical and theological systems of Hegel and Augustine. Examining Hegel and Augustine around the issues of transcendence and freedom offers a way to understand these more localized disagreements between political philosophers and theologians, and even between theologians.

Film and Philosophy Stanley Cavell’s coming to philosophy was inspired, as he recounts, by the contingent encounter between philosophical and non-philosophical texts. He singles out Witt- genstein’s Philosophical Investigations, for example, as one that “staked its teaching on showing that we do not know, or make ourselves forget, what reading is.”2 He also names three films — Bergman’s Sommarnattens leende (Smiles of a Summer Night, 1955), Resnais and Duras’ Hiroshima Mon Amour (1959), and Antonioni’s L’Avventura (1960) — that suggested to him what philosophy might become should it re-orient itself towards different modes of thought.3 These three films, for Cavell, not only altered American perceptions of what “foreign” (indeed “Continental”) films could do, they also opened up the question of what constitutes “a medium of thought.” Indeed, they were films that served “to alter the iconography of intellectual conversation,”4 not least the possibility that film might be a partner to philosophy, or that some kind of marriage between the two might be possible. I take Cavell’s anecdote to be significant for understanding the possibilities of our philosophical engagement with film. It raises the question of how we should ap- proach film-philosophy, understood as a distinctive way of writing philosophically about film that Cavell, more than most, has made intelligible.
