TELLING THE TRUTH ABOUT CLASS G. M. TAMÁS ne of the central questions of social theory has been the relationship Obetween class and knowledge, and this has also been a crucial question in the history of socialism. Differences between people – acting and knowing subjects – may influence our view of the chances of valid cognition. If there are irreconcilable discrepancies between people’s positions, going perhaps as far as incommensurability, then unified and rational knowledge resulting from a reasoned dialogue among persons is patently impossible. The Humean notion of ‘passions’, the Nietzschean notions of ‘resentment’ and ‘genealogy’, allude to the possible influence of such an incommensurability upon our ability to discover truth. Class may be regarded as a problem either in epistemology or in the philosophy of history, but I think that this separation is unwarranted, since if we separate epistemology and the philosophy of history (which is parallel to other such separations characteristic of bourgeois society itself) we cannot possibly avoid the rigidly-posed conundrum known as relativism. In speak- ing about class (and truth, and class and truth) we are the heirs of two socialist intellectual traditions, profoundly at variance with one another, although often intertwined politically and emotionally. I hope to show that, up to a point, such fusion and confusion is inevitable. All versions of socialist endeavour can and should be classified into two principal kinds, one inaugurated by Rousseau, the other by Marx. The two have opposite visions of the social subject in need of liberation, and these visions have determined everything from rarefied epistemological posi- tions concerning language and consciousness to social and political attitudes concerning wealth, culture, equality, sexuality and much else. -

Tomas Marttila 2010 ISSN: 1832-5203 Foucault Studies, No. 10, pp. 173-177, November 2010 REVIEW Alain Badiou, Theory of the Subject (New York: Continuum, 2009), ISBN: 978-0826496737 (1) Badiou’s Post-Political Ontology of the Subject Alongside Jacques Ranciere, Jean-Luc Nancy, Gilles Deleuze and Claude Lefort, Alain Badiou is one of the most influential and productive French philosophers of our times. Contemporary French post-foundational philosophy is split into a Lacanian and a Heideggerian stream. The Lacanian stream is more relevant than ever today, as it has been predominant in the works of, amongst others, Ernesto Laclau, Slavoj Žižek and, more recently, Jason Glynos and Yannis Stavrakakis. Marchart has observed the ‘Heideggerian’ influence above all in the works of Alain Badiou, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques Derrida and Michel Foucault.1 Alain Badiou’s Theory of the Subject (French: Théorie du Sujet), published for the first time in 1982, combines both La- canian and Heideggerian philosophy and, in this regard, reflects some of the most central philosophical ideas in recent French post-foundational philosophy. In today’s globalized post-cold-war neo-liberal world, the developments in communist China and the Soviet Union described in Theory of the Subject appear out of time. This anachronism does not, however, account for Badiou’s thought as such. Based on the works of Hegel, Hei- degger and Lacan, Theory of the Subject provides a universal ontology of the political subject. Despite its slightly misleading title, Theory of the Subject is a book about politics as a particular truth event, which makes the political subject appear as the promise of the truth to come. -

brazilianpoliticalsciencereview ARTICLE The Place of Normativity in the Political Ontology of Ernesto Laclau* Daniel de Mendonça Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Brazil This article is a reflection on normativity in the field of political theory, with the ontological dimension found in Ernesto Laclau’s discourse theory as a presupposition. We base ourselves on the premise that, as a political theorist (rather than a political philosopher), Laclau has developed a political theory with great analytical applicability, which is also significantly useful for thinking about the role and limits of political normativity. We sustain that the normative, widely understood as a set of precepts or politically desirable situations, has a limited place in the area of discourse theory. In order to carry out our proposal, this paper is divided into five parts. Firstly, we deal with the post-foundationalist position found in Laclau’s thought. Following that, we present him as a political theorist. We then analyse the notions of ideology and discourse, central to the political ontology present in discourse theory. Following that, we discuss antagonism and dislocation, categories used to explain the incompleteness of social meanings, ac- cording to Laclau. Lastly, in the light of the ontological presuppositions presented, we seek to establish the possibilities and limits of political normativity, bearing in mind the discourse theory developed by him. On the Ethics of the Subject FILOZOFIA 72, 2017, No. 9, pp. 724-735 The paper addresses the tension between Badiou’s claim that his theory of the sub- ject must be considered first of all as a ‘formal’ theory, and a certain genealogical history of his notion of the subject. In the latter case, it seems that a very specific political experience has played a crucial role (at least) for Badiou in his early con- ception of the subject. More particularly, the paper addresses this tension from an ethical perspective. As for the claim repeatedly made in his work (that the subject poses in the first place a formal problem), one can identify an implicitly ethical disposition in the formalization itself. At the same time, there are several formula- tions in his writings that seem to exceed the formal level. The paper examines four concepts or formulations appearing in his three main books (Theory of the Subject, Being and Event, Logics of Worlds) that seem to express a more or less explicit ethical dimension, namely his theory of affects, the principle ‘to decide the unde- cidable’, the contrast between ‘fidelity’ and ‘confidence’ and Badiou’s answer to the question What is it to live? The paper’s aim is to pinpoint the difference be- tween the ethical stance implied in the formal description of Badiou’s theory of the subject and an explicit ‘ethics of the subject’. -

An "Authentic Wholeness" Synthesis of Jungian and Existential Analysis Samuel Minier Wittenberg University Eclectic approaches to psychotherapy often lack cohesion due to the focus on technique and procedure rather than theory and wholeness of both the person and of the therapy. A synthesis of Jungian and existential therapies overcomes this trend by demonstrating how two theories may be meaningfully integrated The consolidation of the shared ideas among these theories reveals a notion of "authentic wholeness' that may be able to stand on its own as a therapeutic objective. Reviews of both analytical and existential psychology are given. Differences between the two are discussed, and possible reconciliation are offered. After noting common elements in these shared approaches to psychotherapy, a hypothetical therapy based in authentic wholeness is explored. But contrary to the usual narratives, the focus will not be on great authors. Closely following the cours magistral lectures of Samuel Hayat, our discussions focus on the history of ideologies, i.e. comprehensive sets of ideas about what society is and should be. Starting with the emergence of the modern State up to the most contemporary debates, this course will give students an overview of the main ideological trends that framed our political conceptual world(s). Required Readings: The mandatory readings (mostly excerpts from larger texts, varying from 20 to 60 pages per week) for this conférence de méthode will be shared with students via google drive. For the most part, the mandatory readings overlap with the readings included in the syllabus of Samuel Hayat’s cours magistral lectures. This multiplicity speaks to a physical disconnection between places as well as to a mental state of disassociation. Through process I enable likewise contradiction and unification. I use materials to reconcile the opposite ends of a spectrum of transformation. Documentation allows me to extract and distill the essence of an action performed in my studio. I use the body in the same way I use materials. I watch its influence on a space, situation and condition and force it to enter interim stages somewhere between pleasure and pain. The resulting pieces capture a metaphysical quest into metamorphic zones that show our interconnectivity to all reality, visible and invisible. The Body 3 In my practice moments of anxiety, discomfort, fear and risk have found a central place. While frightening, they have also been pleasurable. Control through restraint and direction seems to be an allowance for unrestricted and fearless pleasure. In “The Well” (fall 2015, fig. 1) a body is slowly submerging into an undefined depth of water. While submerged in water, the body becomes the only known, the only orientation and place. -

LATIN AMERICAN PERSPECTIVES Boron / POST-MARXISM AND MARX’S THEORY Embattled Legacy “Post-Marxism” and the Social and Political Theory of Karl Marx by Atilio A. Boron The theoretical crisis in political science and sociology resulting from the collapse of the paradigms that have organized the intellectual activities of these disciplines since the postwar years has opened a void that has become the battleground of a host of new theories and epistemological approaches. Yet, the throne left vacant by “structural-functionalism” in Western sociol- ogy and the quick exhaustion of the “behavioralist revolution” in political science is, some 30 years later, still embarrassingly empty. The numerous candidates scrambling for the succession have so far been unable to conquer the realm, although some of these theoretical contenders, such as the “ratio- nal-choice” approach, have managed to penetrate almost everywhere. How- ever, the incurable theoretical and epistemological flaws of this approach permit us to anticipate that its future in a discipline as millenarian as political science will be not very bright and in all likelihood short. One of the candidates for the throne, certainly not the strongest but still significant, is “post-Marxism.” The tremendous transformations experi- enced by capitalist societies since the 1970s, combined with the disintegra- tion of the Soviet Union and the “popular democracies” of Eastern Europe, brought to the foreground the so-called crisis of Marxism and the necessity of its radical overhauling. One of the most ambitious proposals in this regard is post-Marxism, conceived of as a synthesis of the theoretical legacy of Karl Atilio A. -

DOI: 10.4312/as.2019.7.1.55-73 55 Hegel and Chinese Marxism Tom ROCKMORE*1 Abstract China is presently embarking on the huge task of realizing what President Xi Jinping recently called the Chinese Dream. China is officially Marxist, and Marx thus inspires this dream in his assigned status as the “official guide” to the ongoing Chinese Revolution. This paper will focus on the crucial relation between Hegel and Chinese Marxism. Marx is a key Hegelian, critical of, but strongly dependent on, Hegel. Since the Chinese Dream is not Hegelian, but rather anti-Hegelian, it is unlikely, as I will be arguing, to be realized in a recognizably Marxian form. Članek se bo osredotočil na ključno razmerje med Heglom in kitajskim marksizmom. Marx je ključni hegelianec, ki do Hegla ni le kritičen, ampak je tudi odvisen od njega. »Kitajske sanje« pa niso hegelianske, temveč prej antihegelianske, zato je, kot bo razloženo, malo verjetno, da se bodo uresničile v prepoznavno marksistični obliki.
