Signature: Lucy Gwynn Date: 31st October 2016 2 Abstract The survival of the 1711 sale catalogue of the library of Sir Thomas Browne and his heirs has given scholars of his work a privileged insight into his reading and book owning habits. Browne wrote on an encyclopaedic range of subjects and his prose bears the weight (implicit and explicit) of the many books and authors that contributed to his intellectual projects. As a consequence, his library and the 1711 catalogue have attracted intense interest from scholars, in spite of the absence of any physical trace of his books. This thesis examines the relationship between the catalogue and Browne’s library as he knew and used it, striving for a bibliographical reconstruction whilst acknowledging the contingency and incompleteness of the catalogue. It also contributes to the critical study of Browne’s works, assessing his book ownership for the elucidation of his texts, and considering his literary remains as an articulation of his reading. Quantitative analysis of the catalogue and a narrative of the life cycle of the library based on archival records are used to describe the library’s contents and the practices of its owners. The local contexts of Browne’s book ownership are outlined, together with the relationships of his works to his book sources, his museum collecting, and his position in the world of knowledge as articulated through library classification. Browne is described as a book owner who showed little interest in the possession of a ‘library’ as a discrete, permanent collection, despite his profound engagement with books, and the high numbers of volumes that passed through his hands. Browne’s library was also networked, linked to other collections through textual exchange, social relationships, book gifts, and conversations, indicative of a mode of seventeenth-century book ownership defined by fluidity and community. 3 Acknowledgements I would like to take this opportunity to thank my supervisor, Claire Preston, for all the insights and comments that have helped to shape this thesis. When the surgeon, bibliographer, book collector, and balletomane Geoffrey Keynes produced the first authoritative bibliography of Thomas Browne’s works for Cambridge University Press in 1924, he chose to include as a frontispiece a wood- engraving by his sister-in-law, Gwen Raverat (née Darwin).1 Raverat shows Browne in his library, his body sheltered, his page lit and his pen guided by a long-shanked and benevolent Death. The library room is tidy: the desk is conspicuously clear of trash, bearing only the burial urns that inspire him, and an amphibious creature suspended in a jar of liquid. An hourglass is tucked onto the window sill. The books are neatly ranked upon a single shelf. The floor is innocent of screwed-up sheets of discarded drafts. The Vine Bud Moth or European Grapleaf Skeletonizer Theresimima ampellophaga (BAYLE- BARELLE 1808) was thought to be under control for many years. The last harmful infestations are recorded from Hungary in 1954 (ISSEKUTZ 1957a, 1957b). Only a few records are known from later years. A possible reason for the decline of populations may be found in more effective use of pesticide and insecticide. In 1990 Th. ampellophaga was rediscovered on Crimea (Ukraine) after almost 50 years of absence (EFETOV 1990b). For the first time the larvae were found on decorative vines (Parthenocissus). Between 1990 and 1997 the Vine Bud Moth spread all over southern Crimea and has developed very strong populations. This fact leads to the conclusion that neighbouring countries might be in immediate danger. The present paper gives an overview about historical and recent observations of Th. ampellophaga with special emphasis to the situation on Crimea. Pheromone recognition and pest control methods are mentioned. The systematic position and the historical and recent geographical distributions are discussed.

His father was a London merchant about whom little is known. His mother married a second time and Thomas's stepfather, Sit Thomas Dutton, gave him an excellent education, first at Winchester and then at Bradgate Hall, now Pembroke College, Oxford. His undergraduate career was distinguished and he acquired a BA in 1626, followed by a MA in 1629. After a visit to Ireland with his stepfather, he went on the grand tour, visiting the famous medical centres of Montpellier, Padua and, finally, Leyden, where he obtained a medical degree in 1633. The following year he returned to England and then settled at Shibden Hall, near Halifax in Yorkshire, in order to recover his health which had been impaired by shipwreck on the jour- ney home. While recuperating during 1634-5 he occupied himself in writing a book, Religio Medici, which was to make him famous.' He had not at first intended it for publication but, on an imperfect unauthorised version appear- ing in 1642, he agreed to the printing of a cor- rected edition the following year.     Lucy Massey: A Forgotten Poet ACING the Haymarket in Norwich and sheltered on the north F by the great mass of St. Peter's Mancroft Church, where Sir Thomas Browne's statue now sits, contemplating a funerary urn held in his hand, there was formerly a substantial if somewhat ramshackle house, built probably in the seventeenth century, its first floor project­ ing a little and having an attic story with gabled dormer windows. Here in 1822 Simon Wilkin had opened his bookshop and set up his printing works. Here, after Simon left in 1834, Josiah Fletcher brought his bride, Sarah Williams, and here were born their three children-Benjamin Edgington, Emma, and Lucy, the youngest, in 1842. The premises must have. been a hive of activity for besides housing the growing family in reasonable comfort, they provided for a considerable business enterprise, which after 1845 included the editing and printing' of the Norfolk News. For the children the location had much to commend it. Apart from all the interest pro­ vided by being in the heart of the city, two or three minutes' walk took them to the Castle mound round which the girls were wont to run with their hoops before breakfast. Benjamin went to school but the girls had a governess, who, Lucy wrote later, "taught us much of thought and poetry, but not the grounding education she was supposed to be giving".* In due course they learned Latin and the early morn­ ing hoop runs gave way to reading Virgil with father before he started his day's work.

    Parish Registers and Transcripts in the Norfolk Record Office This list summarises the Norfolk Record Office’s (NRO’s) holdings of parish (Church of England) registers and of transcripts and other copies of them. Parish Registers The NRO holds registers of baptisms, marriages, burials and banns of marriage for most parishes in the Diocese of Norwich (including Suffolk parishes in and near Lowestoft in the deanery of Lothingland) and part of the Diocese of Ely in south-west Norfolk (parishes in the deanery of Fincham and Feltwell). Some Norfolk parish records remain in the churches, especially more recent registers, which may be still in use. In the extreme west of the county, records for parishes in the deanery of Wisbech Lynn Marshland are deposited in the Wisbech and Fenland Museum, whilst Welney parish records are at the Cambridgeshire Record Office. The covering dates of registers in the following list do not conceal any gaps of more than ten years; for the populous urban parishes (such as Great Yarmouth) smaller gaps are indicated. Whenever microfiche or microfilm copies are available they must be used in place of the original registers, some of which are unfit for production. A few parish registers have been digitally photographed and the images are available on computers in the NRO's searchroom. The digital images were produced as a result of partnership projects with other groups and organizations, so we are not able to supply copies of whole registers (either as hard copies or on CD or in any other digital format), although in most cases we have permission to provide printout copies of individual entries.

They have their roots in my experience as a law student. I have been interested in the case of Slater v. Baker and Stapleton since I first learned of it in law school. I was privileged to be a member of the Yale School Class of 1974. I took an elective course with Dr. Jay Katz on the protection of human subjects and then served as a research assistant to Dr. Katz in the summers of 1973 and 1974. Dr. Katz’s course used his new book EXPERIMENTATION WITH HUMAN BEINGS (New York: Russell Sage Foundation 1972). On pages 526-527, there are excerpts from Slater v. Baker. I sought out and read Slater v. Baker. It seemed that there must be an interesting backstory to the case, but it was not accessible at that time. I then practiced health law for nearly forty years, representing hospitals and doctors, and writing six editions of a textbook on hospital law. I applied my interest in experimentation with human beings by serving on various Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) during that period. IRBs are federally required committees that review and approve experiments with humans at hospitals, universities and other institutions.

The Oxford University Museum collection of moths is very largely a collection of the types of Hope, Saunders, Walker, and Moore, many of the type specimens being unique and of great scientific value. All Walker's types mentioned in his Catalogue of Hetero- cerous Lepidoptera in the British Museum as ' in coll. Saun- ders ' should be in the Oxford Museum, as also the types of all the species therein mentioned by him as described in Trans. Ent. Soc, Lond., 3rd sen vol. i. The types of all the species mentioned in Walker's cata- logue which have a given locality preceding the lettered localties showing that they are in the British Museum should also be in the Oxford Museum.   • East Ruston, Norfolk, 1851
    EAST RUSTON, NORFOLK, 1851 Introduction East Ruston is a village in north-east Norfolk, situated between North Walsham and Stalham. This paper aims to create a portrait of East Ruston in 1851. In the mid-nineteenth century, most of the working population of East Ruston was engaged in agriculture. There were 2,494 acres of land, most of which was arable, but there was also pasture, showing that animals as well as crops were farmed. 1 In 1810, the East Ruston Inclosure Award 2 allotted about 300 acres of land to the Trustees of the Poor, and the poor were able to cut fuel and pasture their cattle on it. 3 In 1851 there were 183 heads of household 4 and 845 inhabitants. The most common occupation by far was agricultural labourer, followed by farmer. Some also worked on the water in such occupations as waterman, boatman and fisherman. In 1825-6 the North Walsham and Dilham Canal was constructed, linked to the River Ant, and a staithe was built at East Ruston, behind Chapel Road, which was used for landing coals etc. 5 There was also a corn mill – East Ruston postmill – which dated from at least the eighteenth century. In the early part of the nineteenth century, it was owned by Rudd Turner, who is best known for killing his wife and baby in 1831. 6 East Ruston towermill, which is depicted on the East Ruston village sign, was built in 1868. 7 Heads of Household The 1851 census shows that all but two of the 183 heads of household were born in Norfolk, 71 of them in East Ruston itself.
