  • Place-Names in and Around the Fleet Valley ==== D ==== Daffin Daffin Is a Farm at the Head of the Cleugh of Doon Above Carsluith
Place-names in and around the Fleet Valley ==== D ==== Daffin Daffin is a farm at the head of the Cleugh of Doon above Carsluith. There is a Daffin Tree marked on the 1st edition OS map at Killochy in Balmaclellan parish, and Daffin Hill in this location on current OS maps, across the Dee from Kenmure Castle; Castle Daffin is a hill in Parton parish and a house by Auchencairn. This is likely to be Gaelic *Dà pheiginn ‘two pennylands’. Peighinn is ‘a penny’, but in place-names it refers to a unit of land, based on yield rather than area. It probably originated in the Gaelic-Norse context of Argyll and the southern Hebrides, and was introduced into the south-west by the Gall- Ghàidheil (see Ardwell above). It occurs in place-names in Galloway and, especially, Carrick as ‘Pin- ‘ as first element, ‘-fin’ with ‘softened ‘ph’ after a numeral or other pre-positioned adjective. Originally a pennyland was a relatively small division of a davoch (dabhach, see Cullendoch above), but in the south-west places whose names contain this element appear in mediaeval records as holdings of relatively substantial landowners, comprising good extents of pasture, meadow and woodland as well as the arable core, and yielding much higher taxes than the pennylands further north. Indeed, peighinn may have come to be used more generally in the region for a fairly substantial estate without implying a specific valuation. *Dà pheiginn ‘two pennylands’ would, then, have been a large and productive landholding. However, a Scots origin is also possible, or if the origin was Gaelic, reinterpretation by Scots speakers is possible: daffin or daffen is a Scots word for ‘daffodil’, but as a verb, daffin(g) is ‘playing daft, larking about’.

Enjoy! CYCLING IN STEWARTRY This booklet is one of a series of four covering the whole of Dumfries & Galloway that suggest a variety of cycle tours for visitors and locals of all abilities. Local cycling enthusiasts, using their knowledge of the quieter roads, cycle routes and byways, have researched the routes to provide an interesting and rewarding taste of the region. A note of distance, time, terrain and facilities is given at the start of each route. All start points offer parking, toilets, snack places and accommodation. Some routes include stretches off-tarmac and this is indicated at the start of the route. Parking discs are required for some car parks and these are available at Tourist Information Centres and in local shops. Stewartry is part of the old province of Galloway. In those centuries when the easiest way to travel any distance was by sea, it held a strategic place on the west coast, Irish and Isle of Man routes. This explains the many archaeological remains near the coast.

Paul Dance Caller and Teacher Have a look then get in touch [email protected] [email protected] Barn Dance 0845 643 2095 Local call rate from most land lines Square Dance (Easy level to Plus) Ceilidh Twmpath Contra Hoe Down 40’s Night THE PARTY EVERYONE CAN JOIN IN AND EVERYONE CAN ENJOY! So you are thinking of having a barn dance! Have you organised one before? If you haven't then the following may be of use to you. A barn dance is one of the only ways you can get everyone involved from the start. NO experience is needed to take part. Anyone from four to ninty four can join in. The only skill needed is being able to walk. All that is required is to be able to join hands in a line or a circle, link arms with another dancer, or join hands to make an arch. The rest is as easy as falling off a log. You dance in couples and depending on the type of dance you can dance in groups from two couples, four couples, and upwards to include the whole floor. You could be dancing in lines, in coloumns, in squares or in circles,. It depends on which dance the caller calls. The caller will walk everyone through the dance first so all the dancers know what the moves are. The caller will call out all the moves as you dance until the dancers can dance the dance on their own. A dance can last between 10 and 15 minutes including the walk through.

Sadly, he died on the 18th of June 2014 in Aberdeen. He was 90 years old. John's legacy includes a collection of dances that number more than 800, which he bequeathed the copyright to Teachers' Association (Canada) (hereafter referred to as TAC). TAC's first action has been to create a comprehensive list of all dances written by John Drewry. Our second action will be to prepare, for sale, all of the dances in digital format. As you can imagine, this is a huge undertaking with more than 800 dances on the list, so it will take some time. Our aim is have each dance available individually, as part of a collection of dances from a particular source, and finally, as the complete collection. A project of this size and scope does not happen at the hands of only one person. The TAC executive would like to thank everyone who has had a hand in organizing, printing, cross checking, providing missing copies of dances, and of course, all of the typing. We would especially like to thank Betsy Brydon, Barbara Johnston, Anne Miller, Fiona Miller, Paul Miller, Mary Murray, Ron Wallace, Stephen Webb and Vicky Zeltins for their work on this project so far. There will be many more opportunities for more people to get involved as time goes by and requests will go out by email or through TACTalk at the appropriate time.
