Swim, sunbathe, tea and scones, chat. The Royal Goat lounge, decor dated, cheerful crowd, hunger sated. Roman road, route to Cnicht, ancient bridge, pace ‘quicked’; perfect day, Porth- madog behind, Siabod ahead, Snowdon left, Ffestiniog right; Bogs ahead – out of sight. Cwmorthin Quarry abandoned beckons, 55,000 tons of slates (1935) to Germany, even Melbourne – on Porthmadog built ships (250) – good heavens. Cwm Croesor quarried to death, dams, shafts, levels, abandoned rail tracks, we pause for breath. Dave (L) and Steve forge ahead Croesor bound, lift home, tea and scones - again! Dave Jan and Jenny waited, brilliant braai created, in garden splendid elevated. ‘Braai master’ Martin did us proud. By sparkling Glaslyn north bound, Gelert’s Grave - mythical hound; iron horse steaming by, flanks of Hebog, climbing steady, dry, Beddgelert way down below.

    Welcome to September 2019 Newsletter A bumper issue, some items received held over to October, thank you to all contributors, Jane Walk Leaders Training - Dafydd Jones, Chairman A very successful and informative Training session for 18 Walk Leaders was held at the Royal Victoria Hotel Llanberis on the evening of 2 Sept, followed by a very good meal in the restaurant. The evening was organised by Roy and ably supported by a detailed and informative talk by Richard Hirst. The main themes were preparation, confidence and enthusiasm. [1]Roy outlined the importance of communication via Facebook, Twitter and the Eryri website. He was so enthusiastic about the level of activity on our Facebook page, nearly 300 active contributors against a membership total of about 200. It is certainly the way forward in planning and recording all our walks as well as a very efficient way of getting messages to our members about our walks, changes and cancellations. The posting of photographs of our walks is an essential part of our advertising and aids the successes of our walking programme recruitment. Roy reminded all to send their walks for the period January to June 2020 to him by 14 October 2019. [2] Richard then outlined his take on Walk Leaders responsibilities. His theme covered the Duty of Care, weather, kit, confidence and health. We had a very active debate about the need for careful planning, reconnoitring walks, the kit we should have [dependent on the grade of walk], fitness and health issues, weather forecasts [he advised us to check XC Weather and Magic Seaweed as well as the usual Met office forecasts] and the need to include paper maps in our kit as well as our fully charged phones and GPS kit.

These can be considered to be part of the “hard” cultural heritage of the National Park 1.3 Snowdonia is a stronghold of Welsh culture. The Welsh language is the most obvious part of the “soft” cultural heritage in the Park as is the inherent Welsh culture. Some 58% of the population speaks Welsh and historically the percentage was substantially higher. The different dialects used add to the wealth of the area. The language is the unbroken link between the past and the present. There is a Welsh name on every mountain, hill, stream and river. The names of our farms, fields, streets and mansion houses, cottages and towns all form a part of rich cultural inheritance. 1.4 The literature of Wales has its deep roots in the Mabinogi, the nation’s medieval literature masterpiece, which has several stories located within the Park boundaries.
