The report provides geological information about Wales to underpin the process of national geological screening set out in the UK’s government White Paper Implementing geological disposal: A framework for the long-term management of higher activity radioactive waste (DECC, 2014). The report describes geological features relevant to the safety requirements of a geological disposal facility (GDF) for radioactive waste emplaced onshore and up to 20 km offshore at depths between 200 and 1000 m from surface. Swim, sunbathe, tea and scones, chat. The Royal Goat lounge, decor dated, cheerful crowd, hunger sated. Roman road, route to Cnicht, ancient bridge, pace ‘quicked’; perfect day, Porth- madog behind, Siabod ahead, Snowdon left, Ffestiniog right; Bogs ahead – out of sight. Cwmorthin Quarry abandoned beckons, 55,000 tons of slates (1935) to Germany, even Melbourne – on Porthmadog built ships (250) – good heavens. Cwm Croesor quarried to death, dams, shafts, levels, abandoned rail tracks, we pause for breath. Dave (L) and Steve forge ahead Croesor bound, lift home, tea and scones - again! Dave Jan and Jenny waited, brilliant braai created, in garden splendid elevated. ‘Braai master’ Martin did us proud. By sparkling Glaslyn north bound, Gelert’s Grave - mythical hound; iron horse steaming by, flanks of Hebog, climbing steady, dry, Beddgelert way down below.

Ministerial Foreword The impacts and consequences of flooding and coastal erosion can be devastating and with one in six properties across Wales at risk of flooding we face significant challenges to ensure we are better prepared and can manage flooding and erosion to minimise the impacts on those at risk. Current climate change predictions outlined in UKCP09 suggest that across Wales and the UK we face significant risks from flooding. As our climate changes, bringing increases in the volume and intensity of rainfall, rising sea levels and increased storminess means that more frequent and more severe flooding events, coupled with intensified coastal erosion, seem inevitable. It is clear that we must reconsider our approach to flooding and coastal erosion in Wales. Simply building more and bigger defences will not be enough, and we need to consider other ways of managing the risk.

Rheithordy Mallwyd Advent is the time of preparation for a journey, the beginning of Jesus' journey home to his Father, our God. The journey begins with planning and prophecies, and then a joyful send off – the birth of Jesus in the Bethlehem stable. This is the incarnation, “God with us” Julie and I had a week's holiday in Yorkshire recently, staying in the very pleasant town of Skipton. It is nice to have time to read, and so, perhaps appropriately, I read a book by the poet Simon Armitage, called “Walking Home,”describing his walk along the Pennine Way, which passes not far from Skipton. He walked for 2 weeks, in mid summer, through mist and heavy rain. Simon Armitage's book is full of vivid anecdotes, one in particular has stuck in my mind. He tells the story of friends of his, who were also walking the Pennine Way. Setting off one morning from a small Yorkshire Dales' village, to walk the 15 – 20 miles over the moors to their next overnight stop, they are joined by an ever so friendly dog, a golden retriever. They give it such a fuss, that it continues to follow them up the hill. As their village passes out of sight the first twinges of concern begin. “Hey Goldie, it is time that you turned back for home.” But no, Goldie is perfectly happy tagging along! Well surely this dog knows what it is doing, probably follows walkers every day.
