Coniston Power Boat Records Week is at Coniston Power Boat Records Week. November 12 · Coniston, United Kingdom · Coniston Power Boat Records Week 2018 – Round Up Saturday 3rd November 2018 The 48th Annual Powerboat Records Week will be remembered as the week of flat water. There were very few times the water state restricted the type of craft on the run, resulting in a busy week for the timekeepers with no lost time due to the weather. As a Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM – World Governing Body of powerboat racing) calendared event, Coniston Powerboat Records Week is open to competitors from around the globe. This year we were delighted to welcome international competitors from Denmark and Ireland, not to mention from all corners of tHe UK. Some of tHe week's Highlights include: The youngest competitor of the week was 17 year old Thomas Mantripp. Thomas, from Lowestoft, entered 3 classes. Following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, Thomas had already won the British National Championship in 2018 in the GT30 class. His biggest success of the week was in O175 Hydroplane class witH a new World and National record at 89.00mph. The outboard hydroplane class of boat is driven from a lying down position. For a 17-year-old to set 3 World & National Records all over 80mph takes outstanding courage and trust in his team who were preparing the boat. As well as being the youngest entrant, most successful entrant and the most meritorious performance of the 48th Powerboat Records Week, Thomas and his team were awarded the Team of the Meeting Trophy. The fastest run of day 1 was by Ben Jelf. Ben established a British National record in the Supercat class at 115.36mph, which after breaking and re-breaking several times tHrough tHe week settled at 124.38mph being tHe fastest run of tHe week. Ben, 18 from Kent, is no stranger to record breaking on Coniston, achieving His 1st World record at the age of 11 during the 2011 event. Ben entered His Molgaard Catamaran Hull prepared by the Jelf Racing team in 2 classes this week. After proving the setup in the Supercat class, Ben entered in tHe Formula 2 class and went on to establish a newly frozen National record at 124.27mph. As a 1st time water speed record breaker over 100mph Ben received a Gold K7 Club Star, from the prestigious club founded by Donald Campbell. TV’s Wheeler Dealer Edd China made a return to Coniston this year. Edd joined Gibbs development engineer, Rob Clemas and this year took to the water in the Gibbs Amphibious Equada. The Equada is an electric amphicar under development by Gibbs in which Edd established a new National record in the Amphibious Electric class at 28.70mph. Team mate Rob Clemas, in His 3rd year at Coniston, also set a record on a Quadski in tHe Amphibious 1 -2 Litres class at 46.45mph. Distance and Nationality is immaterial in tHe Powerboat Racing World. Peter Hart travelled across tHe lake from Windermere, setting a new National Record in the VP2.75 class at 101.15mph. Jan Jorgenson, travelling from Denmark, with His Co-Driver Peter Mastrup set a new World and DanisH National record in the Rib Open class at 117.06mpH and in the Pleasure Navigation Group B Sports S1 class at 113.18mph. During the week our great supporters and the proprietors of the Bluebird Café in Coniston, Phil and Judith Dixon, observe the pits and competitors and award the Concourse D’elegance trophy for the best turned out team. THis year we were delighted to announce the winners of the trophy were Peter Mastrup and Jan Jorgenson. OCRDA drivers Alan Power and Bob McCarthy this year went head to head in the Pleasure Navigation Group B S2 class. Both drivers set new records, Alan’s fastest run of the week being 67.28mpH wHicH was a new IrisH National record and Bob, running on a Belgian licence set a new World and Belgian National Record at 84.75mpH. Records Week is the only event where all disciplines of powerboat craft can be seen competing in the same event, wHich is one of many attributes tHat make Records Week truly unique. One of tHe most entertaining classes is always the Aquabikes, led by the ever enthusiastic (even on a cold November morning in tHe Lake District) wetsuit clad Jetski pilot Graham Leech, who is Chairman of the Jet Sport Racing Association. After racing around the world throughout the 2018 season, Graham set a new World & BritisH National record tHis week at 71.40mpH in tHe Ski Division GP1/F1 class. Club racing is the grass roots of British Powerboat Racing and a relative new comer to the sport at Club level is 56-year-old Chris Dakin, who races at Lancashire Powerboat Racing Club. Chris from Coventry brought His self-prepared Phantom Monohull boat to Coniston this year and entered in the Clubman 1500 Monohull class. Powered by a Yamaha 90 engine, Chris established a National record at 57.53mph and as a first time British speed record breaker, was awarded a Silver K7 star. Other record breakers from the week were: • Brian Peedell from SlougH set a new World Record in the V24 class at 78.53mpH • Andrew Foster set a World Record in P1 Superstock at 68.15mpH • Vee Ganjavian set a new World record witH Frank Rose as co-driver at 101.13mph in the Pro Vee class. • Seumas Macleod from Isle of Lewis set a new National Record in the PF850 at 70.10mpH. We are truly grateful to all who make it possible to ensure this great BritisH tradition continues, and that Coniston Water remains the Spiritual Home of World Water Speed Record Breaking.
