Bluebird jet boat floats again, 51 years after fatal crash 4 August 2018, by Jill Lawless The jet-powered Bluebird roared past 300 mph (482 kph) before it vaulted into the air, flipped and crashed into the lake, breaking in two and killing the 45-year-old Campbell. It was 34 years before divers managed to raise the Bluebird's wreckage from the bottom of 150-foot (45-meter) deep lake in March 2001. Human remains were found near the boat and confirmed by DNA testing as belonging to Campbell. In September 2001, his body was taken on a final boat trip around the lake where he died before being buried in a nearby churchyard. M ar ch 2 0 1 6 Volume 5, Issue 1 Chairman’s Message This issue of the EHS Newsletter includes your invitation to attend and contribute to the AGM on the 29th April. A large part of that evening will be devoted to the events of the past year, which included some really good meetings, and a major achievement in hosting the One Day Conference of the Kent History Federation (which yielded a small profit). The Society’s much visited website and database has been regularly updated and improved. The “Why is Elham Here?” project has been concluded, and we are getting near to completing the survey of monumental inscriptions in the Cemetery. However, though our focus as a history society is the past, that of the AGM must be the future. We hope to have further interesting talks and visits, and would welcome your suggestions. We hope also to start publishing printed material. The experience of our neighbouring society at Lyminge shows that publications generate interest and, eventually, profit. But initial costs can be high, which is why £500 has been set aside in the accounts for that purpose. The first publication will be a revamp of “Elham History A to Z”, originally printed in the Elham Newsletter some years ago. November 12 · Coniston, United Kingdom · Coniston Power Boat Records Week 2018 – Round Up Saturday 3rd November 2018 The 48th Annual Powerboat Records Week will be remembered as the week of flat water. There were very few times the water state restricted the type of craft on the run, resulting in a busy week for the timekeepers with no lost time due to the weather. As a Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM – World Governing Body of powerboat racing) calendared event, Coniston Powerboat Records Week is open to competitors from around the globe. This year we were delighted to welcome international competitors from Denmark and Ireland, not to mention from all corners of tHe UK. Some of tHe week's Highlights include: The youngest competitor of the week was 17 year old Thomas Mantripp. Thomas, from Lowestoft, entered 3 classes. Following in his father and grandfather’s footsteps, Thomas had already won the British National Championship in 2018 in the GT30 class. His biggest success of the week was in O175 Hydroplane class witH a new World and National record at 89.00mph. The outboard hydroplane class of boat is driven from a lying down position. For a 17-year-old to set 3 World & National Records all over 80mph takes outstanding courage and trust in his team who were preparing the boat. As well as being the youngest entrant, most successful entrant and the most meritorious performance of the 48th Powerboat Records Week, Thomas and his team were awarded the Team of the Meeting Trophy. -

We will re-instate an event that we haven't done in several years: The State Street Cruise!!!! The Cruise will take place this coming Monday, Labor Day, 10 am, Sept 7th. Meet at 10am on the East side of the State Capitol. We will depart at approximately 10:30am, heading downhill in a southern direction. The wide, multi-lane State St has a plethora of historical venues to see, e.g. the Original Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant location, the cement silo's of the old Salt Lake City Laundry (is that the correct name?) Piper Down Bar, the Busy Bee restaurant (famous for tasty garlic burgers), the Fashion Place Mall, Hooters, Rio Tinto Stadium (home of Salt Lake Real) South Towne Mall (meeting place for several BMCU events), Scheels, etc. Our destination is the 12600 South/State St crossroads and the iconic In and Out Burger restaurant. There we will park together for one of our famous, impromptu car shows. Note: in the im- mediate area of this location, there are a multitude of restaurants with a profusion of varieties of food. Put American Flags on your cars, wear patriotic clothing, hats, etc. Let's make this another FUN BMCU cruise! Introduction 1.1 The Museum of Speed The Museum of Speed in Pendine is under-going a major redevelopment, which includes a new building and completely new exhibition. Scheduled to open in spring of 2020, the new museum will be a major visitor attraction and will seek to engage with school pupils from local schools and those using the nearby outdoor centre. This development is part of the larger Pendine Attractor project which includes the creation of an eco-hostel, events space, sand dune gardens and play area. The project is funded by Carmarthenshire County Council, Visit Wales and the European Development Fund. Architects and exhibition designers were appointed by the Economic Development department in Carmarthenshire County Council. The plans are now well developed and work to demolish the old museum is about to start. Carmarthenshire Museum Service will run the museum when it opens and have appointed a Project Curator to oversee the development of the interpretation, content and collections in the new museum. Although the designs for the museum were well established and various reports produced that describe the heritage stories, collections and assets, there was a gap in the interpretive planning and a lack of understanding about the audiences for the museum, the collections available and how the story would be told.
