NATURAL HISTORY AND CONSERVATION GENETICS OF THE FEDERALLY ENDANGERED MITCHELL’S SATYR BUTTERFLY, NEONYMPHA MITCHELLII MITCHELLII By Christopher Alan Hamm A DISSRETATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Entomology Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Behavior – Dual Major 2012 ABSTRACT NATURAL HISTORY AND CONSERVATION GENETICS OF THE FEDERALLY ENDANGERED MITCHELL’S SATYR BUTTERFLY, NEONYMPHA MITCHELLII MITCHELLII By Christopher Alan Hamm The Mitchell’s satyr butterfly, Neonympha mitchellii mitchellii, is a federally endangered species with protected populations found in Michigan, Indiana, and wherever else populations may be discovered. The conservation status of the Mitchell’s satyr began to be called into question when populations of a phenotypically similar butterfly were discovered in the eastern United States. It is unclear if these recently discovered populations are N. m. mitchellii and thus warrant protection. In order to clarify the conservation status of the Mitchell’s satyr I first acquired sample sizes large enough for population genetic analysis I developed a method of non- lethal sampling that has no detectable effect on the survival of the butterfly. I then traveled to all regions in which N. mitchellii is known to be extant and collected genetic samples. Using a variety of population genetic techniques I demonstrated that the federally protected populations in Michigan and Indiana are genetically distinct from the recently discovered populations in the southern US. I also detected the presence of the reproductive endosymbiotic bacterium Wolbachia, and surveyed addition Lepidoptera of conservation concern. This survey revealed that Wolbachia is a real concern for conservation managers and should be addressed in management plans. -

Naci ONUS1 Mehmet BİLGEN2 1Akdeniz University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Horticulture, 07059 Antalya, Turkey 2Akdeniz University Faculty of Agriculture Department of Field Crops, 07059 Antalya, Turkey Correspondence addressed E-mail: [email protected] Abstract In this study using the chloroplast matK DNA sequence, a chloroplast-encoded locus that has been shown to be much more variable than many other genes, from one hundred and forty two plant species belong to the families of 26 plants we conducted a study to contribute to the understanding of major evolutionary relationships among the studied plant orders, families genus and species (clades) and discussed the utilization of matK for molecular phylogeny. Determined genetic relationship between the species or genera is very valuable for genetic improvement studies. The chloroplast matK gene sequences ranging from 730 to 1545 nucleotides were downloaded from the GenBank database. These DNA sequences were aligned using Clustal W program. We employed the maximum parsimony method for phylogenetic reconstruction using PAUP* program. Trees resulting from the parsimony analyses were similar to those generated earlier using single or multiple gene analyses, but our analyses resulted in strict consensus tree providing much better resolution of relationships among major clades. We found that gymnosperms (Pinus thunbergii, Pinus attenuata and Ginko biloba) were different from the monocotyledons and dicotyledons. We showed that Cynodon dactylon, Panicum capilare, Zea mays and Saccharum officiarum (all are in the C4 metabolism) were improved from a common ancestors while the other cereals Triticum Avena, Hordeum, Oryza and Phalaris were evolved from another or similar ancestors. -

The objective was to determine the characteristicof the maintenance of Gossypium barbadense in the Central-West Region of Brazil, with the aim to foster the conservation of the species. Expeditions were conducted in 2014-2015 in Southeast Goiás, where cotton collection has not been reported before. Data from previous collections in Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul and Distrito Federal available in Albrana database were considered this study. In the Central-West Region of Brazil, 466 accesses of G. barbadense were recorded, found most frequently in backyards (91.4%), but also spontaneous plants (7.5%), farm boundary (0.8%) and commercial farming (0.2%) have also been found. The main use indicated by VDU was as medicinal plant (0.66), therefore this is the main reason for in situ preservation. -

College, Barasat, Kolkata- 700124, West Bengal, India *Author for Correspondence: [email protected] ABSTRACT Epicalyx, staminal tube, stigma and trichome morphological characters have been used to characterize some common members of Malvaceae s.s. These characters have been analyzed following a recent molecular phylogenetic classification of Malvaceae s.s. Stigmatic character is effective for segregation of the tribe Gossypieae from other tribes. But precise distinction of other two studied tribes, viz. Hibisceae and Malveae on the basis of this character proved to be insufficient. Absence of epicalyx in Malachra has indicated an independent evolutionary event within Hibisceae. Distinct H-shaped trichome of Malvastrum has pointed out its isolated position within Malveae. Staminal tube morphological similarities of Abutilon and Sida have suggested their closeness. A key to the genera has been provided for identification purpose. Appendix A: Conceptual Design Documentation APPENDIX A Conceptual Design Documentation June 2019 A-1 APPENDIX A: CONCEPTUAL DESIGN DOCUMENTATION The environmental analyses in the NEPA and CEQA documents for the proposed improvements at Oceano County Airport (the Airport) are based on conceptual designs prepared to provide a realistic basis for assessing their environmental consequences. 1. Widen runway from 50 to 60 feet 2. Widen Taxiways A, A-1, A-2, A-3, and A-4 from 20 to 25 feet 3. Relocate segmented circle and wind cone 4. Installation of taxiway edge lighting 5. Installation of hold position signage 6. Installation of a new electrical vault and connections 7. Installation of a pollution control facility (wash rack) CIVIL ENGINEERING CALCULATIONS The purpose of this conceptual design effort is to identify the amount of impervious surface, grading (cut and fill) and drainage implications of the projects identified above. The conceptual design calculations detailed in the following figures indicate that Projects 1 and 2, widening the runways and taxiways would increase the total amount of impervious surface on the Airport by 32,016 square feet, or 0.73 acres; a 6.6 percent increase in the Airport’s impervious surface area. Drainage patterns would remain the same as both the runway and taxiways would continue to sheet flow from their centerlines to the edge of pavement and then into open, grassed areas. The existing drainage system is able to accommodate the modest increase in stormwater runoff that would occur, particularly as soil conditions on the Airport are conducive to infiltration. Figure A-1 shows the locations of the seven projects incorporated in the Proposed Action. -

Biological Assessment- Lucas Creek Project BIOLOGICAL ASSESSMENT For the LUCAS Creek PROJECT KERN RIVER RANGER DISTRICT SEQUOIA NATIONAL FOREST Kern County, California PREPARED By:--J; �ATE: February 5, 2018 Nina Hemphi Forest Fish Biologist/Aquatic Ecologist and Watershed Manager This Biological Assessment analyzes the potential impacts associated with implementation of the Lucas Creek Project on federal endangered and threatened species as identified under the Endangered Species Act. The environmental analysis evaluates the preferred alternative. The Lucas Creek Project includes removal of dead and dying trees on 250 acres on Breckenridge Mountain. The project area is located in sections 23, 24, 25, & 26, township 28 south, range 31 east, Mount Diablo Base Meridian on the Kern River Ranger District of the Sequoia National Forest. The project surrounds the Breckenridge subdivision on Breckenridge Mountain approximately 25 miles southwest of the town of Lake Isabella in Kern County California. The intent of the Lucas Creek Project is to remove hazard trees along roads and properties adjoining the Breckenridge Subdivision. The project would also reduce fuels build-up to protect the community and the Lucas Creek upper and middle watershed from high-intensity fire. This will improve forest resilience and watershed health. This document is prepared in compliance with the requirements of FSM 2672.4 and 36 CFR 219.19. Biological Assessment- Lucas Creek Project I. INTRODUCTION The purpose of this Biological Assessment (BA) is to review the potential effects of Lucas Creek Project on species classified as federally endangered and threatened under the Endangered Species Act (ESA, 1973). In the past, distributional data on the ecuadorian Sphingidae were reported by Dognin (1886-1897), Campos (1931), Rothschild & J ordan (1903) and Schreiber (1978). Haxaire (1991), describing a new species of Xylophanes from Ecuador, has reported a total of 135 species collected in Ecuador. Racheli & R acheli (1994) listed 167 species, including recent collecting data for 80 species, and all the records for the country extracted from the literature, including also doubtful records such as Manduca muscosa (Rothschild & J ordan , 1903) and Xylophanes juanita Rothschild & J ordan , 1903 which are unlikely to occur in Ecuador. The total number of hawkmoths species of Ecuador may account for approximately 155-160 spe cies. Following the recent studies of Racheli & R acheli (1994, 1995), Racheli (1996) and Haxaire (1995, 1996a, 1996b), additional records of Museum specimens and of material collected in Ecuador are given herewith. All the specimens reported below are in the collection of the senior author unless otherwise stated. [email protected], [email protected] RESUMEN Los lepidópteros nocturnos ostentan una gran diversidad de especies, sobresaliendo los grandes ejemplares denominados esfinges, a continuación en el presente trabajo se procede a citar y describir las especies halladas en el Valle del Rio Rímac - Departamento de Lima registrándose un total de 12 especies de la familia Sphingidae y estas dentro de dos sub familias (Macroglossini, con seis géneros) y (Sphingini con tres géneros) con un total de 9 géneros hallados, siendo estos: Hyles, Erinnyis, Pachylia, Callionima, Aellops, Eumorpha, Agrius, Cocytius y Manduca) entre las cuales la sub familia Sphingini es la más diversificada con 5 especies y 3 géneros. Palabras Clave: Entomología, Esfinges, Lepidópteros, Lima, Diversidad. ABSTRACT The nocturnal lepidoptera have a great diversity of species, with the large specimens called sphinxes standing out. In this paper, the species found in the Rímac River Valley - Department of Lima are cited and described, registering a total of 12 species of the family Sphingidae and these within two sub-families (Macroglossini, with six genera) and (Sphingini with three genera) with a total of 9 genera found, these being: Hyles, Erinnyis, Pachylia, Callionima, Aellops, Eumorpha, Agrius, Cocytius and Manduca) among which the Sphingini subfamily is the most diversified with 5 species and 3 genera. -

Smith, Jr. Professor Emeritus of Botany Department of Biological Sciences Humboldt State Univerity Arcata, California 14 September 2018 The Redwood National and State Parks are located in Del Norte and Humboldt counties in coastal northwestern California. The national park was F E R N S established in 1968. In 1994, a cooperative agreement with the California Department of Parks and Recreation added Del Norte Coast, Prairie Creek, Athyriaceae – Lady Fern Family and Jedediah Smith Redwoods state parks to form a single administrative Athyrium filix-femina var. cyclosporum • northwestern lady fern unit. Together they comprise about 133,000 acres (540 km2), including 37 miles of coast line. Almost half of the remaining old growth redwood forests Blechnaceae – Deer Fern Family are protected in these four parks.
