Although a number of initiatives to preserve the “sung folklore” of the Nazi ghettos and camps were undertaken soon after the end of the Second World War, Kaczerginski’s magnum opus, the anthology Lider fun di getos un lagern (Songs of the Ghettos and Camps), published in New York in 1948, remains unsurpassed to this day as a resource for research in the field of Jewish folk and popular music of the Holocaust period. ii Chapter one of the dissertation recounts Kaczerginski’s life story, from his underprivileged childhood in Vilna, Imperial Russia (present-day Vilnius, Lithuania), to his tragic early death in Argentina. -

He has worked for 17years as a leading government official for the U.K. government in international defense and security policy. Prior to assuming his current position, Mr. Newton was the Deputy Director for Military Operations Policy for the U.K. Ministry of Defense RACHEL RIZZO is the Bacevich Fellow at the Center for a New American Security. Her work focuses on NATO, Europe, and transatlantic relations. Prior to joining CNAS, she worked at the Atlantic Council’s Brent Scowcroft Center on International Security, as well as at Goldman Sachs, the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, and the U.S. Mission to NATO. JULIANNE “JULIE” SMITH is Senior Fellow and Director of the Transatlantic Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. She is a contributing editor to Foreign Policy, where she coedits “Shadow Government.” From 2012 to 2013, she served as the Deputy National Security Advisor to the Vice President of the United States. Before her post at the White House, she served for three years as the Principal Director for European and NATO Policy in the Office of the Secretary of Defense in the Pentagon. JIM TOWNSEND is an Adjunct Senior Fellow in the Transatlantic Security Program at the Center for a New American Security. After eight years as Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (DASD) for European and NATO Policy, he completed over two decades of work on European and NATO policy in the Pentagon, at NATO and at the Atlantic Council. -

They felt music had a unique significance and power to seduce and sway the masses. Shortly after the Third Reich gained power in 1933, orchestras and conservatories were nationalized and funded by the state, and popular performers were recruited to serve as propaganda outlets for the Reich. The Nazi Party made widespread use of music in its publicity, and music featured prominently at rallies and other public events. -

PART 1 – HISTORICAL OVERVIEW 11 | P a g e 1.1 Pre-War Judaica and Jewish Museum 2 Collections: An Overview One of the first semi-public Judaica collections was the so-called „Juden-Cabinet“ in the Dresdner Zwinger. Elector August the Strong had acquired a number of objects in 1717 stemming from the Mayer‘sche „Lehrsynagoge“ of Lutheran theologian Johann Friedrich Mayer, who had assigned convert Christoph Wallich to present them in Mayer’s library for educational purposes.3 Court agent Alexander David (1687-1765), factor to the Brunswick court, bequeathed his estate of Judaica objects to the community of Brunswick. He is considered the first collector of Jewish ceremonial objects.4 This private possession of Jewish ritual objects was evidently not the only example of the practice, however – i.e. we find a spice-container in the estate of Wolf Oppenheimer, deceased in 1730, grandson of famous court agent Samuel Oppenheimer.5 And his daughter-in- law, Judith, bequeathed a considerable part of valuable equipment for a prayer room in 1738.6 A major collection was compiled by French composer Isaac Strauss (1806-1888). It was this collection that was presented for the first time to a wider public at the Paris World Fair in 1878. With the financial support of Nathaniel Rothschild the collection was acquired by the Musée de Cluny. In 1887 the first publicly accessible exhibition of Jewish materials took place at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Anglo-Jewish Historical Exhibition featured parts of the famous collection of Efraim Benguiat (1856-1932).7 Well known would also become – among others - the private Judaica collections of Polish grain merchant Lesser Gieldzinski (1830-1910),8 German art collector Salli Kirschstein (1869–1935)9, Schachne Moses Salomon10, English banker Arthur E. -

What followed, however, was a striking display of discordant allegiances. The audience, gathered in the Ukrainian town of Berehove in an outdoor amphitheater, stood mute during the Ukrainian hymn and then burst into boisterous song for the anthem of Hungary, a foreign country. The spectacle explains why, whether along Ukraine’s border with Russia in the east or on its western frontier with the European Union, border-straddling bonds of language and culture make it so difficult for Ukraine to hang together as a single, unified state.
