Puketutu Island Quarry & Cleanfill
Puketutu Island Quarry & Cleanfill MIMICO Environmental Excellence Award 2009 Summary This application for the 2009 Environmental Excellence Award is based on Winstone Aggregates Puketutu Island Quarry and Cleanfill. Given the cultural, ecological, landscape and scientific sensitivity of Puketutu Island there are numerous environmental initiatives that are not mentioned in this application. This application focuses on two aspects of the Puketutu Island operation. The first is the success of cleanfill management in implementing environmentally sound procedures and ethics and in doing so setting the standard for similar operations to follow. This has involved ongoing development of the Fill Management Plan and has seen investment in new technology such as a hand held XRF to assist the proactive approach WA takes to assessing and checking fill for acceptance onto Puketutu Island. Cleanfilling on Puketutu allows the extraction of more rock close to the Auckland market and continues to avoid waste of valuable landfill space that would otherwise be used by Puketutu cleanfill. The second aspect of this application is the sawmill remediation carried out over the past year. It is a fantastic example of how quarrying resources can be pooled together to tackle a challenging problem and achieve a great environmental outcome. The land owners now have land with unconstrained future use and a groundwater resource which is no longer polluted, highlighted already by the improvement in water quality of nearby boreholes. Winstone Aggregates is applying for the Environmental Excellence Award to recognise the high level of environmental achievement in managing the Puketutu Island Cleanfill including the initiative taken by quarry management to implement assessment and control of cleanfill quality which has been ongoing since its commencement in the early 1990’s.

Toward Sustainable Biosolids Management: The Challenges and Opportunities of The Disposal Of Biosolids At The Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant By Reza Hendrawan Summary Auckland, as one of the world’s most liveable cities, is supposed to be able to manage their sanitation facilities, including biosolids, more wisely. Even though Auckland City has demonstrated their advanced processes in wastewater treatment, there is an issue on how to manage biosolids, a by-product generated during the wastewater treatment process, in a sustainable and integrated way. Evidence has shown that the application of biosolids can be harmful, not only to human health, but also to the environment. This report aims to re-evaluate current and forthcoming practice in disposing of biosolids from the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant. Currently, the biosolids are being disposed to rehabilitate an old oxidation pond, which seems to be in compliance with the standards set by The New Zealand Water and Wastewater Association. However it is a fact that the oxidation pond will be at full capacity shortly. With regard to this issue, Watercare has proposed to “rehabilitate” Puketutu Island by disposing biosolids into the quarry hole. Watercare’s proposal has attracted debates about the positive and negative effects of disposing of biosolids at Puketutu Island, which are discussed on this report. Even though the proposal has been granted by the Environmental Court, this report concluded that Watercare’s plan may be economically viable but should be seen as the last resort. It is further proposed that Watercare places more controls on industrial wastewater and restricts the type of waste that can be discharged into the sewerage system, especially wastewater which contains toxic metals.
