During the month of Hovember, the !::~~ecu tive Association News Conunittee set up a Board of Trustees, seven in number, who will administer the affairs of the Association insofar as they relate to our l ong- projected Canadian Railway I,ruseum. Following the elections in January, it is anticipated that the work of many presently -i ndep c~d ent committees , such as the Ro l ling Stock , ~Iuseum and Purchasing and Bales Committee , will be integrated under the Board of rrustees of the C i....rJ. ~d ­ ian Ra ilway Museum . The Board will be responsible to the 2xecutivc , and not more than three members , a minority, of the 3xecutive , mo.y simultaneously be members of the Board. This ".'ill ensure the auto:lo'1Y of the ~xecutive in matters respecting the Board. The month of November also saw an increase in our collection of prototype items of rolling stock. ;-J ith the passing of the Ho ntreal & Southern Counties Railway (see account in this issue)' in mid- October, the Canadian National Railways released to us el ectric car No . 104, which had been promised to the Association in 1955. This car, the only one of its class to have been preserved for historical purpos~~l is a wooden , double- truck , double- end suburban car, built for the ~~C RailNay by the Ottawa Car Manufacturing Company in the year 1912. The second item· to be a·cquired is our first operating steam l oco­ motive. This engine, an 0- 4- 0 saddle-tank industrial switching engine , standard gauge, was presented to the Association by the E. B. Eddy Com­ pany, the pu1pmaking firm of Hull, Que . It was built by the i.!ontrea1 Locomotive Company in 1925 , and has been replaced at the Eddy ' s Ottawa plant by a small industria l diesel l ocomotive. This engi ne is in operating condition, and it is expected that it will be kept in this condi tion and used to move other pieces of rolling-stock t-.rhen our museum site is established f in addition to serving as an interesting exhibit • The third acquisition is a Montreal & Southern Counties Railway interurban car, No . 6ll, built by tho Ottawa Car r.1anufacturing Co;npany in 1917. It is a double- truck , wood.en, sinele-end interurban car, 1.nd it has been purchased at scrap value from the CNIl throu[;h the private donations of several of our members, for the Association . Uhil c it was the original intention to confine our r~C acquisitions to No. 104, ) the lack of a true interurban car in our collection r esulted in ~.:;j1e decision to acquire No. 611, at no cost to the Association. As a result of the sYi:1pathetic efforts of r.1r . Ii' . A. Pouliot Gen­ eral Superintendent, Canadian Pacific Railway , J.lontreal, the CPR h.:l.5 permitted the Association to store the cars on its tracks in Eontr eal, 84 pending re:noval to a permanent site sometime during 1957. The loco- motive is to be stor ed privatel y by one of our members .

He (I/ebster Hagner) successfully interested the Vander bilt family in the introduction of his own type of slcepinc car on the New York Central -- then controlled by Conuodore Cornelius Vanderbilt himself. In 1 867 , i!lagner built a Iidrawing room car" -- ancestor of the parlour car , and on September 1 st , 186$, four :ragner- built cleeping cars went into service on the New York Central & Hudson itivcr RR . As a result 0:: the backing of the V.?,nderbilt family, l,1agner secured a monopoly on the NYC where his cars ,.,..; re used exclusively, but after more than thirty years of intense competition, Pullman absorbed the Wagner company in 1899 . Hebster 'Jagner was killed at 3puyten Duyvil , NY , January 13th, 1 382, in one of his own cars which had caught fire from the stoves :.nd l amps after a sever e collil:ion. \/hile the use of Pullman a nd Uaener cars became fairly cxtc~ 1 ~5.ve in the United States , the Grand Trunk Ra ilway remained the princip:.tl user of Pullman cars in Canada . Subsequently , as other Canadi~n rail­ ways reached proportions which re~uir ed sleeping facilities in trains , they o\-med and operated their own cars independently of the fullnk1.n Cow-pany . :lith the openi ng of the first Canadian transcontinental by the Canadian Pacific ~lai l \'lay, the first of a long line of s l eeping cars were acquired and put in service. The firs t train to operate in this service left lIontreal on June 27th, 1386, and arrived at Port Noody at noon on July 4th . First class passengers slept in the CPI{ sleeping cars "Honolulu ,/ and ,tYokohama '/ , memb ers of Q series of cars imaginatively named after Oriental cities . They took their meals , on this initial run , in a dining car named "Holyrood" , which, \·rith its companions , bore the names of British .itoyal castles. As a resul t of this predil ection for privacy, the ~uropean trav­ el ler pays more for his ac.comodation than \ie do . He always has j before the turn of the century, travelling was a l ways the prerogative of the ruch 3uropean. Compartment equipment as used outsido Amer i ca is essentially a room, not unlike American bedrooms , with an ufper and a lower berth. The upper berth hoists i nto the ceil ing. Sinel e occupancy of such a compartment constitutes first class ; double occupancy second cl ass . More recentl y t third cl ass sl eeping cars \-lith tiers of three berths in s i x­ berth compartments have been introduced. The latter cars are used by the vari ous State railwcys and the facilities ~re provided usually to enabl e t he passenger to recline , thouGh not to undress .

1,1u eh the most extensive use of sleeping cars in ~u rope , the Near ;';:ast.& Central and North Africa is that provided by the"Compagnie Inter­ national e des ~lagons Lits et des Grands .ti:xpress Europeens" . This Company is steeped in tradition and as a result , modern amenities such as we i n America know them are only beginning t o be introduced. The standard Wagon- Li ts car possesses air- conditioning of the do pen- window'! type . A few cars have been equipped \,iith air- conditioning ~inc c the Uar a nd it is probabl e that this trend will continue. Al so , t te Com­ pagnie insists uren the individual heating of each car by a :1e: ... l~er similar to the :Saker heater chich is a familLlr feature of older rai l­ way equipment on this side of the Atlantic. Th is heater is in charge of the tlconducteur'l who has a host of duties quite unlike those of his American counterparts . The Compagnie feels , lOGically enough , it ~ust be adm i tted, that a narc precise control over heating can be obtained in this way, rather than by rel iance upon stearn heat ''ihich is theoret­ ical ly subject to the whim of the eneincer, or the economi c policies of the various national railways over which ·,fagon- Lits cars operate .

The story of the C. I . \1 . L. is one of perSistence amone: , D. number of perver se ~uropean gover nments of another era. In ma intnining unifor m operation of its cars fai rly freely in and out of the Iron Curtain, the Compagnie Intern8.t ional e des ~.Jag ons Lits has triumphed notabl y where international political bodies have been unsuccessful . Even today it is possible to send a :iagon- Lits car through from td Istanbul and return ~ passi ng through Communist Jugoslavia and Bul Ga r ia on the way . The car gets through BulgariaL though f ew, if any, through pass­ engers may do so . At the Jugos lav- ~u l gar ian frontier , the Istanbul passenger must l eave the Orient ~xpress and go by a different route to Greece , where the train may be rejoined once again. Angele Subdivisions were abandoned, and the Granby Subdivision became part of the Canadian National I( ailHays , beinG extended , at the same ti:ne , to \laterlooo, The so- called \Jest 3hefford Subdivision of the CrJ:i nm', extends onl y from ClouC; h (Granby) to I.Ieigs (Farnham) so that i'·, does not include the station for which it is named. The l ast train to Ste .Anr,ele VIas No . 432, which left St;La,mbert at 4:40 PM on Satur day, October 13th and lias operated by car ,;608 . Car //609 made the l ast run to riarievill e as train No . 436. C1.r ,;(608 returned from Ste .h.neele to Marieville as train No . 453 , then was coupled to car ,;'609 a fter its arrival,I and both r eturned as an extra to St . Lambert . Car 1;~J20 made the l ast run to Nontreal South, while car :'~ l Ol ran to nackayville (Elizabeth Street) carrying several members of the Association. Both cars then returned to St . Lambert. The Association ' s members participated in an official commemorative excursion in car ,;'104 on October 1 3th. This trip covered all remainilJ$ ) lines and was the l ast special car chartered on the i:I£cSC . Following the cessation of service , the bodies of a ll cars except Nos . 104, 305 , 323 , 610 and 611 were offered for sale. They '"ere purchased by a bidder "oflho resold them for use as motel s J snack bar!:) , 91 or sheds throughout the fl30uth Shore" area .. By the end of October, all bodies so disposed of had been r emoved , l eaving: only trucks and miscellaneous electrical equipment to be sal vaBed for scrap by the CNR. The five cars excepted, noted above , 'Vlere transferred to the Pointe St . Charles yard of the Canadian National Railways . 1'0 . 305 i s to be used as a CNR Tower Trail er in the rlontreal Ter:ninals el ectrifi ed zone, whil e nos . 104 and 610 had been donated to our ASSOCiation, and to the New England 1!: lectric ilailw3.Y Historical Society at Kennebunkport , Ne . , respectively.
