    The Economist November 7, 2015 The chancellor’s crucible After ten years in power, Angela Merkel is being forged anew in the refugee crisis BERLIN In September, at the height of what the German press has since dubbed an “autumn fairy-tale”, Angela Merkel visited an asylum centre in Spandau, near Berlin. The refugees greeted the German chancellor as though she were their saviour, pressing close for selfies with her. Mrs Merkel does not usually take kindly to unsolicited male hugs. But this time she posed gamely and flashed winning smiles. What made her a heroine to the refugees was a decision she had taken only days earlier. Thousands of people trudging through the Balkans toward northern Europe were stranded in Hungary in precarious conditions. Empathising with these huddled masses, Mrs Merkel temporarily ignored the European Union’s asylum agreements, which stipulate that the member state in which refugees first arrive must process their asylum requests. On the chancellor’s command, Germany opened its borders to the refugees. Coming via Austria on foot, bus and train, more than 20,000 arrived in the first weekend of September alone. At first, many ordinary Germans greeted them in a euphoric mood—from the railway station in Munich where the refugees disembarked by the wagonload to asylum centres around the country like the one in Spandau. But others in Germany and across Europe were taken aback. There has since been a marked backlash against the August Willkommenskultur whose spirit Mrs Merkel captured and encouraged, with those Spandau selfies held up as reckless enticements for yet more Syrians and others to join the 1m refugees now expected in Germany this year.

Problem und Forschungsstand Personalisierung von Politik betrifft nicht nur PolitikerInnen, sondern auch die VermittlerInnen von Poli- tik. Sie stehen mit ihrem Namen für ein Produkt, dessen Inhalt Politik sein soll und dessen Markenname identisch ist mit dem seiner Verkäuferin, in diesem Fall der TV-Moderatorin Sabine Christiansen. Solange es diese Sendung gibt, ist sie und ihre Protagonistin heftiger Kritik von ganz unterschiedlichen Seiten ausge- setzt. Der Vorwurf lautet, Teil der Entwicklung hin zu einer Boulevardisierung der Politik zu sein. Dass die Sendung gute Quoten hat, nehmen die KritikerInnen als Bestätigung ihrer These und lassen dabei die Frage außen vor, warum eigentlich so viele am Sonntagabend einschalten. Als im Juni 2006 bekannt wurde, dass Sabine Christiansen aussteigen und ein Nachfolger oder eine Nach- folgerin gesucht wird, erhielt die Diskussion um Christiansen, das TV-Format und letztlich die Boulevard- isierung von Politik neuen Auftrieb. Sehr schnell zeigte sich wie schon beim Start der Sendung 1998, dass die Debatte eine stark genderbestimmte ist, dass Lob und Kritik an Person und Sendung Sabine Christiansen nicht frei sind von Geschlechterstereotypen. Innerhalb der kommunikationswissenschaftlichen Geschlech- terforschung entstanden daher Arbeiten, in denen untersucht wurde, welche Rolle die Kategorie Geschlecht spielt in der publizistischen Auseinandersetzung mit der öffentlichen Person Sabine Christiansen und ihren journalistischen Fähigkeiten (vgl. Klaus 2000; 2002).     INTRODUCTION Pegida as a European Far-Right Populist Movement Helga Druxes German, Williams College Patricia Anne Simpson Modern Languages and Literatures, University of Nebraska Historian Geoff Eley argues that the idea of Europe has contracted from the ideal of a pluralistic community with the potential to integrate cultural “Others” to a “narrowly understood market-defined geopolitical drive for the purposes of competitive globalization.”1 Global deregulation, he states, has produced streams of labor migrants and the tightening of Europe’s external borders, while the economic expansion of Europe to more member countries since 1992 has opened up new divisions and inequalities among them. Aftereffects from the break-up of the East bloc can be felt in the esca- lation of antiminority violence in Central and Eastern Europe, as well as “the smouldering slow burn of the legacies of colonialism” in Western Europe.2 These diverse pressures and anxieties coalesce on the spectral fig- ure of the Islamic fundamentalist at Europe’s gates. Right populist groups profit from these anxieties by averring that the prob- lem lies not with their own racism, which they strategically disavow, but rather with the caveat of a profound cultural incompatibility of Islam and democracy. They claim that this difference is observable through the ages and therefore immutable, that its invasive potential must be countered by an assertive identitarian nationalism from within “Fortress Europe.” In his analy- sis of far right politics in Austria, political scientist Farid Hafez draws attention to the dominant strategy of anti-Islamic populism: “This is based on a mono- lithic, not differentiated and homogenous perceived Islam, which is used for construing boundaries and antagonistic confrontation.

The problem posed by the authors of this paper is to reveal peculiarities of linguistic persona of one of the most authoritative state and political actors of our time: Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany. Material for the research comes from various election debates, speeches at international forums and in Bundestag, addresses to voters, interviews of "the engine of the EU" with journalists of various media outlets. An anthropocentric approach that has become the main principle of modern linguistics, enriched with procedures having being developed within cultural, political and social linguistics, application of methods used in study of linguistic persona in the context of gender and values presented in the media and political discourse, allowed to attain certain results. Lexical and idiomatic markers in Angela Merkel's speeches, her formulation of basic principles of domestic and foreign policy, linguistic response to crisis events and provocative questions give a possibility to model the main parameters of her linguistic persona. She is a strong leader with muffled gender attributes, which usually appear in selection of linguistic means that always conform to the literary language.
