The border between North and South Korea is a no man’s land – just like the old Inner German border. Although it’s a terrible place for humans, it’s turned out to be something of a natural para- dise. Flora and fauna have been able to flourish between the walls and fences. Global 3000 traveled to the demilitarized zone of South Korea, where for example rare cranes live in ecologically intact sanctuaries. The magazine profiles those working to ensure that this unlikely haven has a future.

IN FOCUS Jewish Life in Germany

In 2021, Jewish life in Germany can look back on a 1,700-year history. To mark this anniversary, DW will be broadcasting a series of special programs on the subject on 19 September. These include the talk show Third Generation: Homeland Germany?: Today, Germany is home to many young Jewish creatives who were not born here, but in the former Soviet Union, the US or Israel. What does homeland mean to them as members of the “third generation?” And how do they define identity – whether it be cultural, religious or artistic? The novelist Deborah Feldman, the author and musician Dmitrij Kapitelman, the soprano Shai Terry and the museum director Hetty Berg meet at ’s Jewish Museum to discuss these questions. From 11 September, you can see Photo: WDR / Leonardo Film a shorter version of the debate on Kultur.21.
