Cultural Studies Educational change and cultural politics: national identity-formation in Zimbabwe (240pages) Director of Dissertation: Stephen Howard The study investigates how the post-independent government of Zimbabwe, as seen through the lens of its cultural critics, used the institution of education as a focal point for nation-building and social transformation. The project examines how critics respond to the use of educational change as a way of political legitimization. Whilst a number of scholars have focused on post-colonial Zimbabwe during the post-1980 period, they did not have the chance to study it during the post-2000 era, which was a critical and dramatic historical juncture because of the turmoil and a reversal trend of the promises that were made at independence. The qualitative research approach was formulated to collect data on education and language policy, politics and culture from a cross-section of people of the Zimbabwean society. Brief case study interviews were conducted to provide newer and richer details on Zimbabwean cultural landscape. The research design was structured to allow for the use of documentary and archival sources for the collection of qualitative and historical data, participant-observation, and for the use of the interview to solicit perspectives, viewpoints and perceptions. The case study of Zimbabwe shows that an official historiography of national culture was imposed at independence through educational change as a way of political legitimization. The Zimbabwean education system is situated in the context of culture, knowledge and power. While the Zimbabwean official discourse on national culture includes claims to homogeneity, it also conflicts directly with the leadership elite’s maintenance of hierarchies of class. The elites actually need the heterogeneity they also deny. The postcolonial state is replicating the colonial state. English dominates as the media of instruction in schools and as the official language in Zimbabwe. The curriculum is itself part of what has been called a selective tradition. The curriculum is always the result of struggle and comprise. Zimbabwean artists, through music and literature are fighting for the creation of new political spaces and public spheres that fall outside traditional definitions of the government. Artistic expression expands discursive space and dialogue on national issues and gives us alternative stories and possibilities about Zimbabwean realities, cultures, and identities.     US-China Education Review A 7 (2011) 952-959 D Earlier title: US-China Education Review, ISSN 1548-6613 DAVID PUBLISHING Teaching With and Learning Through ICTs in Zimbabwe’s Teacher Education Colleges Charles Musarurwa University of Botswana, Gaborone, Botswana The use of ICTs (information and communication technologies) in Zimbabwe’s teacher education colleges is of paramount importance. The teacher trainees have a dual role to play: learning through ICTs and also learning how to teach through them. Interestingly, the rate at which schools have embraced the use of ICTs is unprecedented, but this has not been matched with an equal effort by teacher education colleges and hence teacher trainees have been less exposed and trained in using such technologies. Evidently, this has created a mismatch between the need for teachers who are conversant with ICTs and e-learning and their availability. This paper stems from a pilot programme in which the author was an active participant. It reflects on efforts made to integrate ICTs into the teacher education curriculum and evaluates the impact that this programme will have on teacher education in Zimbabwe. The data collected was based on a questionnaire administered to senior officials in the Department/Ministry of Education in each one of the participating countries. In addition, documents were solicited from the Departments for statistical purposes. Forde Leeward Islands Agronomist University of the West Indies St. John's Antigua INTRODUCTION In the Leeward Islands the production of tomatoes is largely in the hands of peasant farmers who make use of commercially available varieties. The crop is established during the period September- November and matures in December-March which coincides with the dry season and also the period, of lowest mean minimum temperatures (70- 72°F). Even at the peak of production, local market demands in Antigua and St. Kitts are not satisfied, but production levels in Montserrat allow for some export of produce to the New York as well as other Caribbean markets. The main problems associated with the industry are the evalua tion of commercially available varieties according to time of plan- ting, and extending production into the dry season by the introduc- tion of irrigation. At the University of the West Indies research in tomato breeding is aimed at developing varieties for increased yield under dry season conditions and high yielding varieties that will set fruit at night temperatures above 72° for wet season production. However there is a pressing need in the Leeward Islands to examine the performance of the commercial varieties available in the area, especially in relation to time of planting. Impunity. Zimbabwe. Human Rights. Transitional Justice ABSTRACT Popular music has been used since the colonial times as an instrument of criticizing the various levels of authority in Zimbabwe. It was used as an artistic vehicle for denouncing colonialism. After independence, the same medium was used to agitate for social justice. More than thirty years after independence the same genre is being used to denounce impunity and political violence. Through the years what has changed is the language, which migrated from euphemism to confrontational lyrics, not the message, which has consistently attacked the authorities. The paper begins by theorizing popular music as an arts genre. This is followed by an analysis of songs that were critical of the colonial governments and those that criticized the post-independence government. The music of Thomas Mapfumo was singled out as protest music, which consistently spoke to the authorities about their perceived shortcomings.
