This case study presents the situation in Ireland as regards the representation of men and women on the electoral lists in the elections for the European Parliament 2014.

The first two tables indicate the legal situation regarding the representation of men and women on the lists and the names of all parties and independent candidates which will partake in these elections.

The subsequent tables are sorted by those political parties which were already represented in the European Parliament between 2009 and 2014 and will firstly indicate whether and how a party quota applies and then present the first half of the candidates on the lists for the 2014 elections.

The legal situation in Ireland regarding the application of gender quotas

 2009-2014: 1298 Number of seats in the EP  2014-2019: 11

 System type: Single Transferable Vote (STV-Droop; also known as Hare). Each voter casts their vote for one candidate and a second preference, in case their vote is to be transferred to another candidate (see “allocation of seats”)  Threshold: no threshold.  Number of constituencies: 3. In 2014 a constituency reshuffle will take place; only Dublin will keep the same amount of MEPs and the same geographical constituency.  Allocation of seats: A candidate is elected once he or she has reached the quota. Any votes accruing to a candidate in excess of the quota are redistributed on a Electoral System type for proportional basis among the remaining candidates in the EP election 2014 accordance with the preferences expressed by the voters.  Compulsory voting: no. Legal source:  Act concerning the election of the representatives of the Assembly by direct universal suffrage, Official Journal L 278, 08/10/1976 P. 0005 – 0011.  Governed by the Electoral Act 1992, the European Parliament Elections Acts 1997, the Electoral Act 1997, the Electoral (Amendment) Acts of 1998, 2001, 2002 and 2004, the European Parliament Elections (Amendment) Act 2004 and the European Parliament Elections (Amendment) Act 2014
