History and Chronicle

400 years tradition - and where the name "Gell" comes

Our house has existed since the beginning of the 17th century and is also called Wegmacherhaus (Road Maintenance House). The oldest reference to the origins of the Hotel Gell comes from the year 1632.

Our first ancestors were road maintenance staff, hence the name of our company is also Wegmacherhaus. In addition to road- and way maintenance work, our first ancestors also operated a small farm.

Our great-grandfahter was a wood cutter and farmer and started some time before the 2nd World War with the accommodation of guests. He was a zealous host for friends, neighbours, merchants and business guests who used the Roman Radstädter Tauern Pass route over the Alps.

In 1954, the daughter (our grandmother Anna Gruber) took over the heritage. Together with Raimund Gell, who comes from Fanningberg, she continued the work of agriculture and guest accommodation. In 1964, Anna married her beloved Raimund and since then the name "Gell" has been in Tweng. In December of the same year, Rupert was born and two years later his sister Elfriede. Grandmother Anna expanded the Wegmacherhaus to a lovely guesthouse. With much heart and commitment, our grandmother supplied our guests.

The successful reign of Anna ended in 1994 when Anna and Raimund Gell handed the operation over to their son Rupert and his wife Manuela. The two built a new hotel with a 200 sq.m. spa area next to the old inn in place of the stable, which was completely demolished in 2007. Even today you can feel the long tradition of hospitality at Hotel Gell. Rupert Gell and his family have built a great tradition over the years, with much effort and attention to detail for traditional-modern but familiar hotel with special flair. Guests from all over the world appreciate the extraordinary ambience and the historic walls of the hotel. With much heart and commitment, our grandmother supplied our guests.

And ancient traditions still apply as they have for centuries:  The locals still meet at the pub. Hotel guests are of course welcome anytime.  Travellers and business people on the nearby A10 motorway and the B99 route pass through Obertauern and Katschberg find their relaxing environment during a stopover.  Tourists from Austria and many other European countries have appreciated the family atmosphere and enjoy genuine cuisine with recipes from grandma's kitchen and modern creations of Chief Rupert.

Bus connections WINTER: There is a free shuttle bus from Tweng to the ski resorts of Lungau (Grosseck/Speiereck, Aineck/Katschberg, Fanningberg) and Obertauern. Check the timetable for departure times in the attachment of the hotel map. The ski bus between Tweng and Obertauern is free, to Lungau you need a valid ski pass or sports equipment. Our Insider Tipp: You can go by bus to Grosseck/Speiereck to ski a half day and then you go by bus from this ski area to Aineck/Katschberg from the valley station of St. Martin. This connection bus drive every half hour and the same way back or directly by bus to Tweng. SUMMER: You need a bus ticket and you can go by bus for just € 1,00 between Mauterndorf and Radstadt. This a great deal. Check the timetable for departure times: www.postbus.at or ask at the reception.

Check in & Check out The rooms are available at any time after 14.00, it is necessary to leave the rooms not later than 10.00 o’clock. Please open the safe at your departure!

Hotel Door: Your key card locks the main entrance. The main door is closed from 23.30 to 7.00.

Keycard The keycard locks the main entrance to the respective hotel wing, your room and the ski cellar during the opening hours. If you need a second keycard please ask at the reception.

Library The public library in the community office of Tweng opposite our house, opening hours Monday to Thursday 08.00 to 16.00 and Friday 08.00 to 12.00.

Lifts/Cable cars WINTER: The free ski bus service from Tweng to the ski resorts of Lungau (Großeck/Speiereck, Fanningberg and Katschberg/Aineck) and to Obertauern - check the timetable for departure times in the attachment of the hotel map. The main opperating time of the cable cars in Obertauern and Lungau is from 09.00 – 16.00. Some connecting cable cars are also going longer. The lift-card you get at every lift station and bank. Children to 6 years skies free with their parents. Night skiing: Obertauern at Edelweiss-Lift: Monday and Thursday from 19.00 - 22.00. Grosseck/Speiereck at Trainings-Lift: Tuesday and Friday from 19.00 - 21.00 Good-Morning-Obertauern: The cable cars are in opperation from 08.30 every Wednesday. For NON-Skiing people: Persons without ski equipment can go to the mountain with the Gondola – Grünwaldkopf and Zehnerkar in Obertauern and Grosseck-Speiereck in Mauterndorf. SUMMER: Summer cableway operation from June to September: Obertauern: Grünwaldkopf Cabine Lift and Hochalm Chair Lift Mauterndorf: Grosseck Cabine Lift St. Michael: Sonnenbahn Cabine Lift In case of rainy weather, storm or thunderstorm no cableway operation! Panoramic Camera 24 hours a day, the current panoramic of Obertauern will be broadcast via the cable TV station Obertauern. Via the cable TV station Lungau, the current panorama of Fanningberg, Großeck / Speiereck, Aineck and Katschberg will be sent.

Parking Large, free hotel car park surround the hotel. Only stop in front of the hotel to load and unload your car.

Petrol Station There is a petrol station next to our house. There is an automatic station (open 24h) in Mauterndorf on the right of the main road as you drive into the valley.

Pets/Dogs We are a dog-friendly hotel. First and foremost, however we are a people- friendly hotel. Not everyone must love dogs. But hardly anyone has had a problem with a well-behaved dog. This is the key to mutual acceptance here at the hotel. We try to be considerate of one another. The cost of a dog per room is € 7 per night. NOT allowed here at the hotel are aggressive and uncontrolled dogs, dogs that bark and whine continuously. Dogs that cause trouble and female dogs in heat.

Postage Stamps are available at the reception. Outgoing mail can be given at reception, this will be collected from Monday to Friday between 09.30 to 10.15 o’clock by the postman.

Post Office The post office is in Obertauern next to the Tourist Office. Opening hours MO-FR 9.00 – 13.00. In Mauterndorf there is a post office too in Café Manuela. MO-FR 9.00 – 12.00 and 14.30 – 17.30.

Quiet Hours 23:00 to 07:00. If you come in late at night, please try to be as quiet as possible so as not to disturb the guests who are already asleep.

Reception Our reception is not always attended, but you can call „66“ and you can reach us.

Rentals: Ask at the reception for information.

Repairs If there is anything destroyed or do not work. Please let us know and we will repair it immediately.

Set Menu With Choice of Dishes Please choose your evening meal by ticking the relevant options on the menu card that is on your breakfast table.

Shopping Obertauern you can buy everything and also in Mauterndorf you get food and beverages and so on. If you want to make a shopping day we recommend to drive to Tamsweg (20 km), St. Michael (20km), Radstadt (25km) or Salzburg (100km).

Ski Passes If you book Hotel+Ski Pass Package: We do not get the ski pass cheaper and we do not know if you want to have the Obertauern or the Lungo Skipass. For this reason we beg you to buy the ski pass yourself. You can buy the ski pass anywhere – at every lift station and at every bank.

Ski Storage Room: Exit the room on the courtyard side with your keycard. Please hang your ski or snowboard boots on the boot dryer and put your ski or snowboards in the storage. Be careful that you do not change your boots or ski.

Smoking Smoking in the rooms is not allowed. You can smoke in the Old Farmers’ Restaurant.

Spa Area/Relaxation Centre Our spa area is on the ground floor and is opened:  WINTER from 15.30 to 19.00  SUMMER on request (In summer, the jacuzzi is not working for hygienic reasons.)
