Here, between mountain and valley, people feel grounded and begin to rediscover who they truly are. Short timeouts and breaks help you in your quest for meaning, to get back in touch with your senses and sensibilities. Slowing down the pace of your life, escaping the stresses of the outside world – both are possible in the Salzburger Lungau region. And did you Tarns Hikes to Alpine Fabulous know, the Salzburger Lungau was actually declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO back in 2012? By accepting this prestigious distinction, the magnificent landscapes of Salzburger Lungau were also placed under special protection. This guarantees you will be able to look forward to incomparable holiday experiences for a long time to come: in the mountains, next to magically beautiful lakes, amid a land of living traditions and creative people who have never forgotten their roots. Difficulty Rating for Hiking Paths in the Alpine Region The following descriptions assume dry, summerlike weather conditions. easy Lake to Mountain from Tours •Simple hiking paths in permanently populated areas and adjacent forested areas, proceeding through flat terrain with few significant uphill stretches. Special Requirements: None, regular running shoes or street shoes are sufficient. No special equipment necessary. Navigable without use of a hiking map. intermediate/medium •Mountain trails that require a certain degree of sure-footedness. Steep stages, water courses, narrow trails at points, wash-out dirt and vegetation may be encountered along these trails. Special Requirements: Basic map-reading skills are required. Hiking/trekking/ mountaineering boots with a good tread and extending above the ankle are recommended, as is a topographical hiking map of the area in question. difficult •Difficult alpine and mountaineering trails, secured at exposed points by of the High Country Flavor cables, manmade stairways, ladders, chains etc. You may often need to use your hands to maintain balance and move along the trail. The precise trail is not always readily recognizable. Occasionally very exposed areas present a real danger of falling, loose rock, and steep grassy or rocky slopes. Summer hikers may well still encounter unthawed snowpack from the previous winter. Special Requirements: Hikers must have appropriate hiking and mountaineering experience, as well as being able to navigate with a detailed topographical hiking map. Hiking/trekking/mountaineering boots with a good tread and extending above the ankle are indispensible. Hikers should have no physical impairments preventing them from tackling fixed-cable stages, steep stairways or similar obstacles where hiking poles are occasional more Parks & Nature Trails Theme of a handicap than a help. In the Salzburg’s Lungau region you will often find additional red-white- red markings (some of which have trail numbers) next to the yellow trail signs, directing you from one sign location to the next.

  • Effective Firefighting Operations in Road Tunnels
Effective Firefighting Operations in Road Tunnels Hak Kuen Kim, Anders Lönnermark and Haukur Ingason SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden Fire Technology SP Report 2010:10 Effective Firefighting Operations in Road Tunnels Hak Kuen Kim, Anders Lönnermark and Haukur Ingason The photo on the front page was provided by Anders Bergqvist at the Greater Stockholm Fire Brigade. 2 3 Abstract The main purpose of this study is to develop operational procedures for fire brigades in road tunnels. Although much progress has been achieved in various fields of fire safety in tunnels, very little attention has been paid specifically to fire fighting in tunnels. This study is focused on obtaining more information concerning how effectively the fire brigade can fight road tunnel fires and what limitations and threats fire brigades may be faced with. This knowledge can help parties involved in tunnel safety to understand safety issues and enhance the level of fire safety in road tunnels. The report is divided into three main parts. The first part consists of a review of relevant studies and experiments concerning various key parameters for fire safety and emergency procedures. The history of road tunnel fires is then summarised and analyzed. Among all road tunnel fires, three catastrophic tunnel fires are highlighted, focusing on the activities of fire brigades and the operation of technical fire safety facilities. In the second part specific firefighting operations are developed. This has been based on previous experience and new findings from experiments performed in the study. In the last part, information is given on how the proposed firefighting operations can be applied to the management of fire safety for road tunnels.

  • Saponaria Pumila (Caryophyllaceae) and the Ice Age in the European Alps1
American Journal of Botany 89(12): 2024±2033. 2002. SAPONARIA PUMILA (CARYOPHYLLACEAE) AND THE ICE AGE IN THE EUROPEAN ALPS1 ANDREAS TRIBSCH,2,4 PETER SCHOÈ NSWETTER,3 AND TOD F. S TUESSY2 2Department of Higher Plant Systematics and Evolution, Institute of Botany, University of Vienna, Rennweg 14, A-1030 Vienna, Austria; and 3Department of Chorology and Vegetation Science, Institute of Botany, University of Vienna, Rennweg 14, A-1030 Vienna, Austria The polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based ampli®ed fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) technique was applied to elucidate the glacial history of the alpine cushion plant Saponaria pumila in the European Alps. Special emphasis was given to a dense sampling of populations. Our data support a survival of S. pumila during the last ice age in at least three refugia, which are characterized by unique marker sets. Patterns of genetic diversity and divergence can be explained by survival in peripheral refugia and additional in situ survival within the ice sheet on peripheral nunataks. A nunatak survival in interior parts of the Alps needs not be postulated to explain our results. The level of genetic diversity is dramatically different between populations (Shannon's diversity index: 0.87± 19.86). Some peripheral populations are characterized by a high number of rare fragments indicating long isolation, but not necessarily by a high level of genetic diversity. Parts of the present distributional area were recolonized via recent long-distance dispersal, leading to severely bottlenecked populations lacking private or rare fragments. The combination of our data with palaeogeological and pa- laeoclimatological evidence allows us to con®ne Pleistocene refugia to certain regions and to draw a detailed scenario of the glacial and postglacial history of S.
