Permaculture People's Garden at the Forest Products Laboratory Permaculture People’s Garden at the Forest Products Laboratory The garden around the hawthorn and crabapple trees adjacent to the Research Demonstration House was designed using perma- culture principles as a part of the USDA People’s Garden Initia- tive. This unique garden was designed to provide a sampling of the USDA’s efforts to teach others how to nurture, maintain, and protect a healthy landscape. Permaculture is a systems-level form of ecological gardening design that uses techniques and practices that combine the best of wildlife gardening, edible landscaping, and native-plant cultivation into one low-maintenance, self-contained, and productive ecosystem. When deciding on the garden design, our designers walked the 25 acres of Federal property where the Forest Products Laboratory (FPL) resides. For this design, the first step was to lay out three swales and berms on the fairly steep slope. A swale is simply an open-air gently slop- ing ditch dug on the contour (equal elevations) of the land. This ensures that the water will flow into the swale and not around it. A berm is an earthen dam on the down side of the swale, created from the excavated soil dug from the swale. Swales and berms not only capture the rain to prevent runoff, but they conserve the water for future use by forcing the rainwater into the Earth down to the impervious layer of soil. There is very little time involved in installing this type water garden because these materials are lightweight, portable and adaptable to a variety of shapes and sizes. Rain gardens also reduce peak storm flows, helping to prevent stream bank erosion and lowering the risk for local flooding. By collecting and using rainwater that would other- wise run off your yard, rain gardens allow you to have an attractive landscape with less watering. How Do Rain Gardens Work? A rain garden receives runoff water from roofs or other impervious (hard) surfaces such as driveways. The rain garden holds the water on the landscape so that it can be taken in by plants and soak into the ground instead of flowing into a street and down a storm drain or drainage ditch. The plants, mulch and soil in a rain garden combine natural physical, biological and chemical processes to remove pollutants from runoff. Many pollutants will be filtered out and break down in the soil over time. Water should stand in a rain garden no longer than 24 hours after the rain stops.

(Feb. 10, 2021) – Later this month, the Arboretum will begin the exciting process of developing a master plan to design and install botanical gardens on the property. The master plan process was made possible by generous grants of $30,000 from the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Fund and $10,000 from the River Branch Foundation. The planning process will take about eight months to complete. The addition of botanical gardens is the latest in a continuous plan to propel the Arboretum into a best-in-class destination in the southeast. Executive Director Dana Doody noted that each project is being planned carefully to add as much value as possible while managing the non-profit’s budget plan in unprecedented times. In addition to the grant for the master plan design, the Delores Barr Weaver Legacy Fund also awarded the Arboretum a $70,000 challenge grant for the first phase of the implementation. The 1:1 challenge grant will launch a community campaign following the completion of the design plan. “The Arboretum is an important community asset which brings thousands of people to its special trails, many of which are ADA accessible,” said Delores Barr Weaver. “The plan will provide a vision for a botanical destination, sure to benefit our citizens for years to come.” The process will take into account the Arboretum’s unique qualities, Florida’s seasons and Jacksonville’s ecosystems and native horticulture.
