Title: Walden III or Cult: Examining the Organization and Structure of Life within Contemporary Intentional Permaculture Communities Abstract approved: Marcel Lebrun, PhD Dissertation Committee Chair Despite decades of economic and medical improvements since the end of World War II, Americans report they are less satisfied with their lives and more unhappy than they were 20 to 30 years ago. Americans in general enjoy a high standard of living, but also report feeling more stressed than individuals living in Third World countries. The spread of this cultural malaise has coincided with American communities across the country reporting a precipitous drop in the level of civic engagement. This has occurred in tandem with the dawning realization that personal happiness and well- being does not correlate with increased income levels beyond the point of meeting basic needs. This research focused on three intentional permaculture communities and determined there were factors of community cohesiveness and commitment that could transfer back into mainstream communities to rejuvenate depleted levels of social capital and civic engagement. Part of the requirement of residency in intentional permaculture communities is the expectation residents contribute to the community and share their life with other residents while leading a sustainable lifestyle. Understanding the organization and structure of life within these communities is of use to mainstream communities as we, as a nation, move toward rebuilding mainstream community structure to enhance individual well-being, increase levels of civic engagement, and move our First World nation into becoming a responsible global partner. Every output from one system could become the input to another system. We need to think cyclically rather than in linear systems. Unmet needs = work, unused output = pollution. Stacking – Make use of vertical as well as horizontal space, filling as many niches as possible.

In fact, leading scientists suggest that only 40 to 80 years of top soil remain world wide (UN Report 2000). History told, the fall of every great civilization was often marked by their failure to take care of their soils (Berry 2002) Introduction Literature Review Analysis Design Conclusions The Problem: Food Insecurity Much of the problem is scale. • Groundwater withdrawal exceeds recharge in most cases. • 1.75 billion tons of soil are lost annually to erosion. Much of the problem is cultural-based • Farmers account for less than 1% of our population. • Factory farming and factory food (fast food) has created an obesogenic nation, 75 billion in medical expenditures to taxpayers. • 26% of the edible food wasted at consumer level 7.3 units of (primarily) fossil energy are consumed for every unit of food energy produced. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Parla Keywords: Permaculture, habitus, lifestyle activism, post-politics, hope This thesis presents a critical exploration of the permaculture movement in Turkey from various interlocking angles. An ecological landscape design system that functions with the ethical values of caring for people and for Earth as well as sharing the surplus, permaculture was introduced in Australia in the 1970s, and became a worldwide movement which refrains from using a political language despite its ultimate desire to establish a “global alternative nation” that consists of ecological and self-sufficient communities. Through ethnographic fieldwork with permaculture groups, I explore the reflections of this movement and its post-ideological language in the post-coup neoliberal context in Turkey. I first describe the process of becoming a permaculturist through the narratives of my interlocutors who are mostly educated, middle and upper- middle class urbanites. Exploring how their consumer habitus shifts to an ecological habitus, I argue that this transformation is already enabled by the privileged positions occupied by permaculturists in society. I then evaluate the lifestyle strategies that they employ to enact change in the world, and I claim that the conception of social change in permaculture replicates Bourdieu’s theory of practice.

However, owing to the particularities of these local contexts, vegetarian foodways are also culturally specific. I use the empirical example of vegetarianism in Japan on the one hand in order to both illustrate the transnational vegetarian foodways and show them in a context different from the original Western one. On the other hand, vegetarian foodways in Japan serve as an example of a distinct local variant of the transnational phenomenon. In addition, Japan has significantly contributed to the development of the transnational vegetarian foodways by means of the spread to the West of Zen Buddhism, macrobiotics and more general holistic attitudes to food and health, as well as certain foods. I start by presenting developments in modern Western foodways concerning the consumption of meat and attitudes to it, and within these developments, the advancement of vegetarianism as a dietary option, a lifestyle and a social movement. I point out Japan’s contribution to these developments and identify the main tenets of the transnational vegetarian ideology resulting from the meeting of ‘West’ and ‘East’: compassion for all living beings, human health and vitality of vegetarian food, and concern about the natural environment. I proceed to present vegetarianism in Japan through a series of contextualised empirical examples consisting of a vegetarian organisation and four individuals operating in Japanese society.

The forest garden will contribute to the livelihood of the occupants, namely the diploma applicant, and visitors. The forest garden is one element in a design which includes the house, the old stables, the back garden, the front garden, the backyard and the driveway, as described in the “Homestead design for Kattekærhus”. It is intended that Kattekærhus in the future will become a LAND centre. The garden will therefore be designed to be a demonstration garden as well as produce a significant contribution to the household food supply and have recreational and educational areas. The aim with the forest garden is to supplement a lifestyle which is semi-self-sufficient.

Understanding if a Nation is using its natural stocks and flows of natural resources in a sustainable way is becoming crucial information for policy makers in order to have a complete picture when developing future strategies. Sustainability poses the challenge of determining whether we can hope to see the current level of well-being at least maintained for future generations, and how this can be possible. Since the 1980’s, policy makers and academics as well as the general public have been debating over what sustainable development is, what the best metrics are to measure the level of sustainability a country (or a region), and how to understand and manage the available natural capital. The Ecological Footprint was introduced at the beginning of the 90’s by Mathis Wackernagel and William Rees. The Ecological Footprint is, in fact, one of the first comprehensive attempts to measure human carrying capacity, not as a speculative assessment of what the planet might be able to support, but as a description of how many planets it would take in any given year to support human demand of resources in that given year.
