Music Our totally awesome music subbies and contributors have been working hard over the semester break to bring you the latest and greatest in music. We’ve got the goss on Splendour, reviews and interviews. So read on tune- loving friends, read on... Sparkadia You have probably heard of Sparkadia. A couple of months ago their debut album Postcards was featured on Triple J. They also recently completed a run of national dates stopping off in Adelaide to play a show with Perth’s the Dirty Secrets at Jive. At the moment they are probably still overseas having just played Glastonbury and T in the Park not to mention several other high profile festivals. I asked Alex, vocalist/guitarist, and Dave, drummer, how they felt about their recent run of good fortune. “It’s pretty sweet”, Dave confides. Of course it wasn’t always like this. “It’s been a real long hard slog and the combination of ‘a lot of luck and a lot of hard work’,” Alex tells me. The guys then explain how they spent nineteen hours in a tour van with The Cops to get to a show in Sydney, having just played in Adelaide. Inevitably, I got onto the subject of Sparkadia’s early days. Alex and Dave were school mates who only bonded over a love of Metallica and ‘Maiden. I gasped in the realisation that I had finally discovered One of the groups defining moments occurred at Splendour in the some like minded heavy metal fans. We spent a little time discussing Grass in 2003. -

Through canonization and Historical documentation, white male dominance has been ensured, obscuring contributions made by white female performers and erasing black, Indigenous, and women of colour (BIWoC) from the genre. Utilizing feminist critical discourse analysis (feminist CDA) to examine texts by canonized male bands reveals the discursive parameters of ideal heavy metal subjectivity (IHMS). Exploration of texts created by white female performers, including a case study of Arch Enemy vocalist Alissa White-Gluz, isolates the necessity for white female performers to reproduce the discourses of IHMS in order to secure their participation in the culture, further contributing to the erasure of BIWoC performers. However, feminist CDA also reveals transformative potential within these texts to de-centre IHMS as the default subject position and shows white women’s agency and resiliency as performers. -

While hate crime encompasses numer - ous themes that have formed a central feature of contemporary social scientific enquiry, including marginalisation, victimisation and difference, attempts to examine these themes through the conceptual lens of hate have been in compar - atively short supply. To some extent this is not altogether surprising as the ‘main - streaming’ of hate crime within academic and political circles in the UK has occurred only recently, but it would appear that the term has been widely adopted without there being any definitive clarity on its actual meaning. This chapter seeks to develop a clear conceptual understanding of hate crime by examining a variety of influential academic and official definitions put for - ward in recent years. It also outlines the legal framework that underpins hate crime and summarises what have been identified as the core characteristics of hate offending and victimisation. Through the course of this discussion, we shall see that understanding hate crime is a far from straightforward task due to the ambiguity associated with the concept. Introduction Hate crime is a term that has assumed increasing salience within academic, polit - ical and social discourse in the UK over the past decade. Although the forms of ‘othering’ that we now collectively refer to as hate crime have been long-standing problems in this country, it is only relatively recently that the expression ‘hate crime’ has emerged within our vernacular. -

Band: Cavalera Conspiracy (BR) Genre: Groove / Thrash Metal Label: Napalm Records Album Titel: Pandemonium Spielzeit: 51:10 VÖ: 31.10.2014 Die konspirative Brüder-Wiedervereinigung geht in die dritte Runde. Der Erstling "Inflikted" (2008) konnte mich mit seinen leichten (old) Sepultura Anleihen, vielen Soulfly-Parts und Einflüssen von Hardcore, für sich einnehmen. Der Zweitling "Blunt Force Trauma" (2011) ist dagegen irgendwie komplett an mir vorbei gerauscht. Umso erfreuter war ich, nun das dritte Album zur Besprechung vorliegen zu haben. Produziert wurde das Ganze von John Gray, der schon diverse Soulfly-Alben betreute. Und eins steht fest: Das Album macht keine Gefangenen. Hier wird von vorne bis hinten geballert und das volle Brett geboten. Das Schlagzeug ist meist sehr schnell unterwegs und der Punch wirklich hart. Die Rhythmusgitarre surrt im Affenzahn, wobei sich der gute Max die Seele aus dem Leib röhrt. Das hohe Aggressionslevel wird durch die vielen noisigen Parts der Lead-Gitarre nochmals verstärkt, was man direkt im Opener "Babylonian Pandemonium" nach hören kann. Lässt man das Album nun weiter laufen, fällt auf, dass die oben stehende Beschreibung zu fast allen Tracks auf der CD passt. Auf Dauer wirkt das Ganze ziemlich eintönig und das am Anschlag liegende Krach-Level macht es nicht einfach, das Album am Stück zu hören. Streckenweise fühlt man sich an gebremste Napalm Death erinnert, allerdings ohne deren Authentizität. Das Schlagzeug tackert in einem Beat durch und lässt schmerzlich die technischen Finessen früherer Tage vermissen. Auch die durchaus charismatische Stimme von Max wurde leider durch viel Gebrüll bzw. Death angehauchte Vocals ersetzt und die Gitarren haben wahlweise nur derbe Schredder-Riffs oder quietschende Soli zu bieten. -

The result is Ro Sham Bo Jo Brion sure looked like they were having agreat time being in the Grays (Epic), arecord full of glorious, melodic tracks that owe as much to gritty at BGB's earlier this month. -

Yet as we traverse through new and intimidating terrain unfamiliar a short while ago, two collaborators have come together to unwittingly create a record curiously suited to an intimidating and unpredictable new era, in which both its vibrant spirit of collaboration and the uncompromising intensity of its aural assault render it life-affirming against all adversity that surrounds. ‘Deafbrick’, the multiplication sum of Säo Paulo’s sonic warriors Deafkids and London’s pulverising duo Petbrick is less a polite meeting of minds than a fiery collision whose impact and incandescence extend beyond the horizon. The project first came to light by way of a collaboration at Roadburn festival, which in itself was the result of the friendship between Deaf Kids and Petbrick’s Iggor Cavalera (also of Sepultura/Soulwax/Cavalera Conspiracy) who had met the band in Brazil. “For Roadburn we just did a few versions of our own songs but as a five piece” says Petbrick’s Wayne Adams (also of Big Lad/Death Pedals) We had so much fun doing the collab and there was a real chemistry between the five of us, so it seemed like a natural progression to actually get into a studio together and write a record.” “After we saw how cool our connection was, we decided to go for a complete three days of total exchange of ideas in the studio, without limitations or preconceptions. -
