Quando l’abbia- mo costruito, la prima cosa che abbiamo fatto è stata installare Ldelle enormi casse autoportanti nella cabina di regia. Sembrano dei monoliti: sono incredibilmente potenti e cristalline, e sono le casse migliori del mondo. Non vedevo l’ora di collegarle e di ascoltarci Roots dei Sepultura, perché hanno le dimensioni dell’impianto audio di Gla- stonbury. Così ho messo su il CD di Roots e ho alzato il volume a 10 – e quel cazzo di disco ha bruciato le casse. Cinquantamila dollari di casse andate in fumo per colpa di Roots... Ho scoperto i Sepultura sul finire degli anni Ottanta. Sono cresciuto a Springfield, Virginia, e fin da piccolo ho amato il rock‘n’roll. Ho scoper- to l’hardcore e il punk rock intorno all’età di 13 anni: un sacco dei miei gruppi preferiti avevano dei messaggi politici molto forti. Non ero un ri- voluzionario, ma c’era qualcosa che mi esaltava moltissimo nel connubio tra casino e messaggio. Qualche anno dopo, il mio migliore amico – che era più metallaro di me – aveva iniziato a scoprire il metal underground. Nel 1984 ave- vamo visto i Motörhead nel programma televisivo britannico The Young Ones e avevamo comprato dal catalogo di un mailorder il primo album dei Metallica, Kill ’Em All, su cassetta, senza averlo mai ascoltato pri- ma, solo perché il nome del gruppo e il titolo dell’album ci sembravano fighi. La musica dei Metallica era definita thrash metal, e ci ha aperto un mondo completamente nuovo. Compravamo un album BLOODY ROOTS - 9 Prefazione CAMPIONE GRATUITO - WWW.TSUNAMIEDIZIONI.COM CAMPIONE GRATUITO per la copertina o il nome del gruppo. Una di quelle nuove formazioni si chiamava Sepultura. In quel periodo i Sepultura erano considerati i nuovi Slayer – e per quanto mi riguardava, era come essere i nuovi Beatles! Quando ho sco- perto che venivano da un angolo remoto del mondo, ne sono rimasto affascinato, e ho iniziato a seguirli nella loro evoluzione. C’era qualcosa di minaccioso nel sentir cantare con un accento straniero e pensavo fosse una figata pazzesca. Ero talmente abituato a sentire i gruppi hardcore e metal americani e inglesi, che quando me ne capitava uno scandinavo o sudamericano, o di qualche altra parte del pianeta, era tutta un’altra cosa, assumeva una natura quasi malvagia. Quando i Nirvana sono diventati famosi, ci siamo presi l’impegno di far conoscere a quanta più gente possibile della musica che altrimenti non avrebbe mai ascoltato, dai Teenage Fanclub ai Sepultura. Ci sede- vamo in fondo al tour bus e ascoltavamo la musica, pensando a come promuovere i musicisti che rispettavamo di più, perché li consideravamo validi. Pensavo che quello che stavano facendo i Sepultura in quel perio- do, ovvero attorno all’uscita di Chaos A.D., non fosse diverso da quanto stavano facendo i Nirvana. Noi facevamo musica che veniva dal cuore ed eravamo completamente onesti, non erano solo semplici ritmiche e stupidaggini: c’erano sostanza e spessore. Ricordo di aver ascoltato Chaos A.D. sul tour bus con Krist Novoselic e di aver detto: “Dovremmo portarci in tour questo gruppo” – perché se loro volevano, ci portavamo in tour i Dead Kennedys, oppure i Bad Brains, e ci saremmo portati anche i Sepultura, se lo avessero voluto, per- ché sentivamo di avere un’affinità con tutti loro. Pensavo che i Sepultu- ra fossero fatti della stessa pasta dei Bad Brains o dei Dead Kennedys. Quelli erano i gruppi che più ammiravamo. Sfortunatamente, poco tem- po dopo Kurt Cobain ci avrebbe lasciati, ma sono abbastanza sicuro che a un certo punto i nostri rispettivi gruppi si sarebbero incontrati lungo il percorso – e sarebbe stato fantastico. Ricordo la prima volta che sono andato a salutare i Sepultura sul loro tour bus. Ero nervoso, perché li ammiravo così tanto e non volevo sem- brare un cazzo di fanboy imbranato. Certe band ti danno proprio l’impressione di essere un vero gruppo, e i Sepultura sembravano una gang di un altro pianeta. Erano la combinazione perfetta di tutte le cose che adoro della musica. Quando nel 1996 è uscito Roots, ha cambiato tutto. Ha alzato talmente tanto il livello che ancora oggi credo nessuno ci si sia avvicinato. Ho avuto la fortuna di far cantare Max sull’album dei Probot, che ho pubblicato nel 2004. I Probot erano un esperimento: ho sempre amato la musica davvero pesante, ma non ritenevo fosse possibile inserirla nella produzione dei Foo Fighters di quel periodo. Avevo uno studio nel mio scantinato, e mi ero messo a scrivere dei riff che registravo per diverti- mento. L’ho fatto per anni: davo le cassette agli amici che si mettevano in viaggio, in modo che avessero qualcosa da ascoltare mentre guidavano.

While hate crime encompasses numer - ous themes that have formed a central feature of contemporary social scientific enquiry, including marginalisation, victimisation and difference, attempts to examine these themes through the conceptual lens of hate have been in compar - atively short supply. To some extent this is not altogether surprising as the ‘main - streaming’ of hate crime within academic and political circles in the UK has occurred only recently, but it would appear that the term has been widely adopted without there being any definitive clarity on its actual meaning. This chapter seeks to develop a clear conceptual understanding of hate crime by examining a variety of influential academic and official definitions put for - ward in recent years. It also outlines the legal framework that underpins hate crime and summarises what have been identified as the core characteristics of hate offending and victimisation. Through the course of this discussion, we shall see that understanding hate crime is a far from straightforward task due to the ambiguity associated with the concept. Prof. József Mezei Abstract: The music industry is undergoing an extensive transformation as a result of growth in streaming data and various AI technologies, which allow for more sophisticated marketing and sales methods. Since consumption patterns vary by different factors such as genre and engagement, each customer segment needs to be targeted uniquely for maximal efficiency. A challenge in this genre-based segmentation method lies in today’s large music databases and their maintenance, which have shown to require exhausting and time-consuming work. This has led to automatic music genre classification (AMGC) becoming the most common area of research within the growing field of music information retrieval (MIR). A large portion of previous research has been shown to suffer from serious integrity issues. The purpose of this study is to re-evaluate the current state of applying machine learning for the task of AMGC. Low-level features are derived from audio signals to form a custom-made data set consisting of five subgenres of heavy metal music. Different parameter sets and learning algorithms are weighted against each other to derive insights into the success factors. The results suggest that admirable results can be achieved even with fuzzy subgenres, but that a larger number of high-quality features are needed to further extend the accuracy for reliable real-life applications.

In line with this the thesis argues that since 9/11, terrorism has been constructed according to four discursive strands. These strands i.e. Orientalism, 9/11, Civilisational threat and Quality and Quantity, have helped depict Islamic terrorism as the biggest threat to the west vis-à-vis the far-right. Instead, the far-right threat has been not disregarded and down-played, so that it is no longer worthy of the “terrorist” label. To demonstrate this, the media narrative for four European countries namely France, Norway, Spain and the UK, has been analysed and evaluated. The findings clearly prove the initial statement as all countries show evidence of all four assumptions. Furthermore this thesis seeks to highlight the important implications that this has on Muslim communities as well as white westerners.     Between Hospitality and Hostility: Understanding Shifts in German Immigration Policy By Mariya Krutkova Advised by Professor Imke Brust Submitted to Haverford College Department of German Studies April 25, 2016 Krutkova 1 Abstract Starting in the post-war period and continuing into the present day, the immigration policy in Germany has been unstable, oscillating between progressive acceptance of immigrants during certain times, and retrograde conservative measures during other periods. This paper traces these shifts in policy starting in the 1940s and aims to discern its underlying causes. The questions raised are the following: What are the political, economic, and discursive forces responsible for changes in policy? What role do attitudes towards immigrants play in influencing policy? And finally, what factors influence formation and expression of these attitudes? The contextual factors found to correlate with conservative changes in policy are economic crises, high influx of immigrants, negative discourse about immigrants, and conservative majority in the government. These factors were found to affect policy by mobilizing negative sentiments against immigrants. Expression of negative sentiments, often steered by right-wing extremist groups, influenced what parties held the majority in the government and what course of action the government would take with regard to immigration. The specific factors that contribute to shaping of negative attitudes towards immigrants are perceptions of them as a threat to cultural and economic identity, as well as to collective security. The expression of these attitudes was fueled by right-wing propaganda and negative portrayals of immigrants in the media during the times of economic instability and high influx of immigrants.
