INDEX FRIEND JOB SCOTT FRIEND JOB SCOTT GO TO MASTER HISTORY OF QUAKERISM 1751 18th of 10th month (New Style): Job Scott was born in the part of north Providence, Rhode Island that has since become Smithfield, to Friends John Scott and Lydia Scott. After a period of what has been said to be youthful folly he “requested the care, and became a member of the Monthly Meeting of Smithfield, then extending to Providence.” ESSENCE IS BLUR. SPECIFICITY, THE OPPOSITE OF ESSENCE, IS OF THE NATURE OF TRUTH. Friend Job Scott “Stack of the Artist of Kouroo” Project HDT WHAT? Afterward, he would minister in various meetings on this continent, in both northern and southern regions. “NARRATIVE HISTORY” AMOUNTS TO FABULATION, THE REAL STUFF BEING MERE CHRONOLOGY Friend Job Scott “Stack of the Artist of Kouroo” Project HDT WHAT? Having obtained such, on this day “he took a solemn leave of his family and friends at home” — and departed to minister in Europe. NEVER READ AHEAD! He would proceed almost immediately to England, and visit Quaker meetings in Kent, in London, in Wales, at Carmathan, and in Bristol, and back to London before embarking at Liverpool and passing over to Ireland. During this month, because of the political unrest in France, the Quaker whaling Rotch family was relocating again, from Dunkirk to England (they would be in England through 1794). 14th of the 11th month: Friend Job Scott, in Ballitore, Ireland, indicated in a dictated letter that he was in the throes of the small-pox. After providing some advice for his children as to their education, etc., he asked that if he should succumb, he be granted a “plain and simple” interment. 22d of the 11th month: Job Scott died of the small-pox at the home of Elizabeth Shackleton in Ballitore, Ireland in the 43d year of his age. (His children would become Swedenborgians and when one of them would get married with a Quaker, that Quaker would be disowned.) Friend Job Scott “Stack of the Artist of Kouroo” Project HDT WHAT? INDEX FRIEND JOB SCOTT FRIEND JOB SCOTT GO TO MASTER HISTORY OF QUAKERISM 1829 Friend William Rotch, Jr. of New Bedford, Massachusetts got married with Lydia Scott, young daughter of the deceased Quaker mystic Job Scott, although she had in the meanwhile become a Swedenborgian.1 In consequence, Friend William Rotch, Jr. was disowned by his monthly meeting of the Religious Society of Friends. As an example of Quaker disownment, here is one that was announced in this year at the Somerset monthly meeting: W.M. Jr. has been guilty of dancing, attending a places of diversion and deviating from the truth and after having been treated with without the desired effect, we disown him from being a member of our religious society.2 1. Note that in an earlier timeframe the Rotch family and Job Scott had been finding refuge in Dunkirk, on the coast of Flanders, and then in England. 2. Morse, HISTORY OF CONSERVATIVE FRIENDS, page 36. A north wing had been added in the rear of the original building, the “Classical Building,” as indicated, to house an “academic department” (now known as the Upper School). HDT WHAT? JOB SCOTT WORKS I APPENDIX SALVATION BY CHRIST FURTHER CONSIDERED OPENINGS OF TRUTH JOB SCOTT WORKS II TENDER CAUTION ONE TRUE GOD ON PERSEVERANCE REWARD / PUNISHMENT ON BAPTISM LIBERTY / NECESSITY The Reverend Henry C. Wright’s later books would attribute his conversion to pacifism to a chance encounter he had at this point in time with some old Quaker man of Providence. According to Wright’s later account of the conversation, the old man’s persuasive ploy in regard to the Peace Testimony of the Religious Society of Friends was to twit or tease him: were he to kill someone in self-defense, obviously as a Christian he would need to do so “with love,” no? (However, it is unlikely that Wright’s conversion to pacifism was so sudden and single-caused as he later would make it out to have been, for in fact in the previous year he had begun a notebook on peace and war, and in this notebook we find that he was already thinking that Jesus’s injunctions not to retaliate or do harm to others in response to their harmfulness to you were injunctions which applied not only to individuals but also to governments. For so long as governments maintained themselves by force, he had been theorizing, it would be improper for the Christian even to cast a ballot.) THE QUAKER PEACE TESTIMONY ESSENCES ARE FUZZY, GENERIC, CONCEPTUAL; ARISTOTLE WAS RIGHT WHEN HE INSISTED THAT ALL TRUTH IS SPECIFIC AND PARTICULAR (AND WRONG WHEN HE CHARACTERIZED TRUTH AS A GENERALIZATION).
