Preamble The eighth largest metropolises in India, Pune is located in the state of Maharashtra. It is the second largest city in the state after Mumbai, and is an important city in terms of its economic and industrial growth. Once the hometown of Marathas and a center of power for the Maratha Empire, the presence of the numerous edifices in Pune links to its rich and glorious past. The city leads as the ‘veritable heartland’ of cultural Maharashtra. Pune also has made its mark as the educational epicenter winning itself the sobriquet, ‘The Oxford of the East’. Not just that, it has a growing industrial hinterland, with information technology, engineering and automotive companies sprouting. The city is known for cultural activities like classical music, spirituality, theatre, sports, and literature. Pune is a pleasant travel getaway destination to spend a quiet holiday. Pune district is located between 17 degrees 54′ and 10 degrees 24′ North latitude and 73 degrees19′ and 75 degrees 10′ East longitude. The district has geographical area of 15.642sq.km. Pune district is bound by Ahmadnagar district on north-east, Solapur district on the south-east, Satara district on south, Raigad district on the west and Thane district on the north-west. -

Over the past couple of decades Copenhagen has not only won awards as one of Europe’s greenest cities by reducing carbon emissions, but also is classed as one of the most attractive to visit. Much of the appeal stems from work by the City Council to make the streets safe and attractive to walk and cycle. These apply many of the ideas put forward by Jan Gehl, Professor of Urban Design, whose consultancy practice is based in the City, such as treating a street as if you were a guest at a party. Cycling now accounts for 37% of trips to work in the city, and the goal is to raise that to 50%. -

Engaging with Sustainable Urban Mobilities in Western Europe: Urban Utopias seen through Cycling in Copenhagen Malene Freudendal-Pedersen, Roskilde University Chapter in the The Routledge Handbook of Anthropology and the City Coming out spring 2018 Abstract Copenhagen has been branded as a city of cyclists, and through Copenhagen’s city planning, cyclists have become an integral part of the city’s mobility systems. The high number of cyclists who use the bike for their daily commute shows real promise when it comes to sustainable mobilities. In many ways, it represents a utopia for future livable cities. In this chapter I will discuss how research on the emotional and embodied praxis of cyclists in the city can initiate an understanding, and possible inroads, towards changing the path-dependent power relation in city mobilities. An important element here is the feeling of freedom associated with cycling. Keywords: Urban, Cycling, Mobilities, Utopias 2 I have been cycling Copenhagen for the last 20 years and before this I was cycling in the city where I grew up. Since my first year of school, cycling has been an everyday praxis, mostly reflected upon when it was absent. Like in the early 2000s where I spent approximately a year in New York. I loved the city but the two things I really missed were my friends and my bike. New York has excellent public transport facilities and at this time I’m not sure I would cycle anywhere even if I have had the opportunity. But spending a long time away from a daily- embodied praxis made me realize how important it was for me. -

In Copenhagen, cycle planning is an integral part of main-stream traffic plan- ning. The cycle track network was already partially completed in the 1960s and 70s although there were much fewer link-ups between cycle track sections then than there are today. Despite the fact that many people bought cars in the 60s and 70s, Copenhageners continued to cycle.
