As part of modern IT hub, it’s population increases day by day next to Mumbai which is near to 3 million as well number of Corona Virus patient increase next to Mumbai. Today’s need of redesigning of Public Transport to minimize the pollution with optimum utilization of available space. This paper represents the pre Covid situation of public transport in Pune and redesigning of Public Transport in Post Covid situation in novel way compared to international scenario. Keywords: Pune,Public transport,Covid 1.Introduction In Maharashtra there are three major Metro Cities one of them is Pune Municipal Corporation. It is situated in western Maharashtra on the Deccan territory. The development and all the economic benefits brought with it an unmatched stress on Pune’s transportation and land use. The roads in Pune are slopping and windy which were built on the natural topographical slopes. The city once known as “cycle-city” is now commonly referred to as a “motor-cycle city”.Pune is well connected to rest of the country by national highways NH 48,NH65,NH60 and state highways MSH27 whereas Mumbai Pune Expressway, India's first six-lane expressway, built in 2020, and drastically reduces the distance traveled between Mumbai Pune. During last couple of years, the urban spread out has extended far beyond the existing territorial influence of the city administration and is continuing to surge over into the periphery areas of the city, including the adjoining industrial hub of Pimpri Chinchwad, Chakan and Moshi. As the city continues to tackle with traffic and mobility problems till the end of 2020.But, post corona pandemic may just be the era of some serious action towards tackling the difficulty, burden of travelers. 2.Pune’s Population and Transport The total population of Pune city as per Census 2001 is near to 25 lakhs. In the last fifty to seventy years, the city’s population has grown by more than five to seven times. The growth in population testifies to the vitality of its financial activity. Table No.1 Pune Population Year Population 1951 488,419 1961 606,777 1971 856,105 1981 1,203,363 1991 1,691,430 2001 2,538,473 2011 3,124,458 Fig.1 Pune Population Volume IX, Issue V, MAY/2020 Page No : 5459 Mukt Shabd Journal ISSN NO : 2347-3150 The table No.1 represents the population of Pune City after independence i.e. as per census from 1951 to 2011 and Fig 1 represent it in graphical form. However the estimated population in Pune City estimated near to 4 million for 2020.As per local survey, the Pune population distinguishes as Fixed Population and Floating Population that means some population will be as per census measurement and some population is increase due to IT hub. 2.1 Transportation Transportation is the movement of humans, animals and goods from one location to another. Transport (British English) or transportation (American English) is the movement of people and goods from one place to another. The term is derived from the Latin trans ("across") and portare ("to carry").It may defined as a particular movement of an individual or thing from one point to another point. On all territory the modes of transport include air, land (rail and road), water etc.As a Pune Metro city is considered the mode of transport which are available is by Road and Suburban Railway. The Fig.2 represents the probable modes of transport. Fig 2. Modes of Transport 2.2 Road Transport Public buses within the city and its suburbs are operated by the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML). The PMPML operates the Rainbow Bus Rapid Transit System system, the first in India, in which dedicated bus lanes exists to allow buses to travel quicker through the city. Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) runs buses, popularly known as ST (State Transport), from its three main bus stations in Shivajinagar, Pune Station and Swargate to all major cities and towns in Maharashtra and neighboring states. Private companies too run buses to major cities throughout India. The Fig 3 represents the road map of PMPML for PMC and nearby areas. Volume IX, Issue V, MAY/2020 Page No : 5460 Mukt Shabd Journal ISSN NO : 2347-3150 Fig 3.PMPML bus map The PMPML is the public transport giver for the metropolitan area neighboring the twin cities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad with a population of 5,057,709. Reasons for these buses being off roads are mainly related to maintenance and frequent breakdowns due to several factors including insufficient manpower and facilities at PMPML depots and lack of preventive maintenance.PMPML also has a number of buses that are owned and maintained by private contractors which also suffer poor maintenance. There are many advantages of road transport as compared to other means of transport. The cost required in road transport is not as much of other modes of transport like railways. The cost of construction, operating cost and maintaining roads is cheaper than that of the railways. In last two decades Pune is emerging as a IT Hub in India. Many big companies have set up base here in Pune realizing the potential of growth in this city. In Pune and nearby areas around eleven IT parks are there such as 1. Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park 7. ICC Tech Park 2. Cybercity IT Park 8. Cerebrum IT Park 3. EON Free Zone IT Park 9. Weikfield IT Citi Info Park 4. SP Infocity IT Park 10. Giga Space Tech Park 5. Pune IT Park 11. World Trade Centre 6. Talawade IT Park Some Private companies too run buses from these IT parks as well as cab providers like Ola, Uber, Savaari, Book My Cab, Get Me Cab and Wings Radio provide cabs from major areas of Pune to transport or travel from their employes.Apart from these service others uses personal two wheeler and four wheeler to move around in the city for other office and business work.As per RTO,Pune information the present number of four-wheelers in Pune is 645,683, two-wheelers 273,147, autorickshaws 53,227, taxi-cabs 28,344, and other heavy vehicles like trucks, buses, tempos, etc., at 38,598.Due to this huge number created massive traffic management issues in most parts of the city and increase in pollution. It also leads to traffic rule violations. 2.3 Pune Suburban Railway Pune Suburban Railway, popularly known as Pune Suburban Service or Pune Local Railway, is a suburban rail system connecting Pune to its suburbs and neighboring villages in Pune District which is operated by Central Railway (CR). The local railway operates on two routes, i.e. Pune Junction to Lonavla and Pune Junction to Talegaon. There are five trains which operate on Pune Junction - Talegao route while eighteen trains operate on Pune Junction - Lonavla route. The Fig 4 represents the Pune Local Railway Map. Volume IX, Issue V, MAY/2020 Page No : 5461 Mukt Shabd Journal ISSN NO : 2347-3150 Fig 4. Pune Local Railway Route According to passengers those are travelling through Pune Lonavala local the local service good but some dislike are there due to low frequency of trains and mega block maintance. Most of travelers are local students and working class. Some other issues like safety and hygiene etc faces by some passangers. As part of improvements in the above one only to improve the existing one and go for the new route. 2.4 Need of new mode of Public Transport Fig.5 Mula Mutha River Map Apart from Bus Route and Sub Urban Railway route there is a need of use of available resources given by nature that is water channel which passes through the main part of Pune City. The water channel i.e. the Mula-Mutha river formed by the confluence of the Mula and Mutha rivers in the city of Pune, which later meets the River. To mininimize the traffic load on city road Pune Municipal Corporation gave approval to build a riverside road on the banks of the Mula-Mutha from Shivane to Kharad which is currently in working from Shaniwar Wada to Mhatre Bridge. The Fig.5 shows the Mula Mutha River channel in Pune City. 3.Redesigning of Public Transport 3.1 Pre Covid Volume IX, Issue V, MAY/2020 Page No : 5462 Mukt Shabd Journal ISSN NO : 2347-3150 Traffic accidents on roads in major urban areas have become a matter of great concern to all.The number of accidents on the roads of Pune and the resulting casualties has been on the rise in the last decade. From the figures available with the RTO, fatal accidents form 24% of the total accidents recorded in Pune. 11% accidents are serious and 65% are minor accidents. As regards the vehicular mode and involvement in accidents, buses have the highest involvement at 67 accidents per 10,000 registered vehicles followed by trucks at 52 accidents per 10,000 registered vehicles. This clearly presents the case to enhance traffic safety and reduce the number of accidents on the roads of Pune.To insure bus volume and dense populated area according to that increase the frequency of buses. To increase the new route of city buses by redesigning of Development Plan and underground route channel. It may done by following way a) Junction development by the inclusion of Area Traffic Control system and the civil works.
