The eating clubs are private entities, and information regarding demographic information of eating club members is primarily limited to that collected in the University’s senior survey and the USG-sponsored voluntary COMBO survey. The Task Force on the Relationships between the University and the Eating Clubs published a report in 2010 investigating the role of eating clubs on campus, recommending the removal of barriers to inclusion and diversity and the addition of eating club programming for prospective students and University-sponsored alternative social programming. Demographic collection for exclusive groups is not the norm at Ivy League institutions. Harvard’s student newspaper issued an online survey in 2013 to collect information about final club membership, reporting on ethnicity, sexuality, varsity athletic status, and legacy status. -

The son of a mining engineer, Ericsson showed an early interest in mechanics. By the age of ten, he had designed and constructed a miniature sawmill and by 13, he was a cadet in the Swedish navy. By the age of 17, he entered the Swedish army, joining as an ensign in the 23rd. Corps, a specialized engineering unit for the army. While serving in the army, Ericsson became interested in steam engines and developed the theory for his caloric engine, which operated on the principle that air heated to very high temperature could be used to drive engines. In 1826 Ericsson published a paper on his work to develop a caloric engine. That year he demonstrated his invention to the British Society of Civil Engineers. Although the engine failed in the demonstration, Ericsson impressed the English engineer John Braithwaite. Braithwaite was impressed with the young Swede's determination and offered him a position as a partner in his firm. -

NEWSLETTER | Spring 2019 ConnectCap and Gown Club to Cap News from the Board Chair Tom Fleming ’69 Dear Cap Members, I am pleased to report that the Cox Wing is on time and on budget, and our undergrad members were able to use the Cox Wing for the first time for Houseparties weekend. We are on track to have our Grand Opening during Reunions on June 1st. Our magnificent two-story addition will meet multiple needs. On the main level, the 1,750 square feet of new above-ground space along Roper Lane is divided into three sections: the 1965 Pavilion provides a southern view looking out over our sunny back courtyard and tailgate lawn and on to the stadium; the REG Room named after three section mates from 1973 (Burke Ross, Tom Edelman, and Ben Guill) looks out towards our expansive front lawn which will soon include a new terrace and garden; the Main Hall is a center atrium that is still an open naming opportunity with an impressive fireplace named for the Class of 1992 engraved with the legendary quote from Herman Heydt, Jr. ’29, “When I enter this club, I feel happy inside.” On the basement level, the 1,750 square feet of new underground space will provide a much-needed Employee Staff Room, named for our club steward Dennis Normile. The additional basement storage space will allow us to manage operations more efficiently and will satisfy the Princeton fire marshal who has been on the verge of fining us for various violations stemming from a lack of sufficient storage space in our current clubhouse. -

PART I Introduction CHAPTER 1 THE SEARCH FOR AN ALTERNATIVE AFFIRMATIVE ACTION POLICY The Search for an Alternative Affirmative Action Policy in American Higher Education In 1973 and 1974, a white U.S. military veteran named Allan Bakke applied to medical school at the University of California–Davis (UC Davis) and was twice rejected. At the time the student bodies of most American colleges and universities were overwhelmingly white, especially the professional schools, such as law and medical schools. In an attempt to remedy the underrepresen- tation of minorities, UC Davis had established an affirmative action program in the early 1970s, with the multiple goals of “reducing the historic deficit of traditionally disfavored minorities in medical schools and in the medical pro- fession,” “countering the effects of societal discrimination, increasing the number of physicians practicing in underserved communities,” and “obtain- ing the educational benefits that flow from an ethnically diverse student body.”1 In furtherance of these aims, the medical school at UC Davis created two separate admission pools: one for standard applicants and another for minority applicants. Sixteen of the one hundred seats in the entering class were reserved for the latter group.2 Bakke was born in Minneapolis in 1940 to a middle-class family of Scan- dinavian descent and was raised in Florida. His father was a postal carrier and his mother was a schoolteacher. He received a bachelor’s degree in engineer- ing from the University of Minnesota in 1962 and joined the U.S. Marine Corps after graduation. He served as an engineer in the Marines for four years, including a seven- month stint in Vietnam, earning the rank of captain. -

Park* During the 1890s and early 1900s a debate of considerable proportions raged in the public press, on college campuses. and in educational, literary, and sporting journals over the game of “American Football.”1 The events and incidents, discussions and diatribes which led up to and surrounded what has come to be known as “the football crisis of 1905-06” have been exam- ined by several historians. A number of years ago Moore called the period between 1893 and 1913 “football’s ugly decades” and maintaned that the game reached its nadir in 1905. Lewis has suggested, however. that the American form of the game was so firmly entrenched that in spite of extensive agitation its banishment from college campuses was never a serious threat. More recently Smith has argued that evidence, specifically that concerning developments at Harvard and Columbia. indicates that the future of American intercollegiate football was briefly in jeopardy.2 The old Football Rules Com- mittee was ultimately forced to relinquish its more or less monopolistic hold on the game and new rules were imposed for the 1906 football season. The President of the United States, an avowed devotee of “the Strenuous Life” and the “manly” virtues of vigorous physical activities, insisted that a way must be found to eliminate foul play and intentional brutality so that the game might continue.3 Columbia University abolished football at the end of the * Professor Park is Chairman of the Department of Physical Education, University of California, Berkeley, Berkeley, California 94720. -

David M. Reed Dave died on February 8, 2021, in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He was 89. He was raised in Pittsburgh and came to Princeton from Shadyside Academy. At Princeton he was a member of the varsity soccer and wrestling teams, joined Cap & Gown and was in the cast of the Triangle Club in the years when the troupe made annual appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show. He majored in English and his thesis “Mark Twain and God” prefigured an interest in the ministry. Dave received a Master of Divinity from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1958 and became a Presbyterian minister, working with several congregations in Philadelphia. Driven by a desire to provide a more personal level of counselling, he earned a Doctorate in Psychology from Tulane University in 1965. He subsequently joined the Marriage Council of Philadelphia. He had a distinguished fifty-year career as a psychologist in the Philadelphia area, continuing to see patients into his early 80s. In addition, he was a radio talk show host on WCAU 1210 radio for several years beginning in the late 1970s, providing advice to callers anxious for access to a caring voice. Dave was married for 37 years to Carolyn Chapple before her death in 1993, and 23 years to Kathy Keogh before she too passed away in 2018. He is survived by his children David Jr. ’79, Douglas and Jennifer; stepchildren Sara and James; six grandchildren and a step-grandchild. John Atwater Bradley – Memorial Note Brad died on February 23, 2021. At Brooklyn Technical High School (NY) he was active in student government, glee club, and swimming. -

ACRONYMS/DEFINITIONS FOR NAVIGATING THE COLLEGE PROCESS¹ Accreditation This term refers to a status granted to colleges, universities or other institutions of higher learning that indicates that the schools has been found to meet or exceed standards from a regional or national association (e.g. North Central Association of Colleges and Schools). In essence, it is “quality assurance” for higher education. Antonym: Diploma Mills ACT the letters do not stand for anything anymore; the ACT was formerly known as the American College Testing program; this test has four components (English, math, reading and science) and an optional writing test. The score range is from 1 to 36, with 36 being the top score. Dread is the tenth Gatorade District of Columbia Boys Basketball Player of the Year to be chosen from Gonzaga College High School. The award, which recognizes not only outstanding athletic excellence, but also high standards of academic achievement and exemplary character demonstrated on and off the field, distinguishes Dread as District of Columbia’s best high school boys basketball player. Now a finalist for the prestigious Gatorade National Boys Basketball Player of the Year award to be announced in March, Dread joins an elite alumni association of past state boys basketball award winners, including Karl-Anthony Towns (2012-13 & 2013-14, St. Joseph HS, N.J.), Dwight Howard (2003-04, SW Atlanta Christian Academy, Ga.), Chris Bosh (2001-02, Lincoln HS, Texas), Paul Pierce (1994-95, Inglewood HS, Calif.), Chauncey Billups (1993-94 & 1994-95, George Washington HS, Colo.) and Jason Kidd (1991-92, St. Joseph Notre Dame HS, Calif.). The 6-foot-5, 205-pound senior guard had led the Eagles to a 27-7 record and a berth in the Alhambra Catholic Invitational Tournament quarterfinals at the time of his selection. Dread averaged 14.1 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.3 steals through 34 games. -
