Performances of Gender in Revolutionary Contexts: The Case of Nicaragua 1 Performances of Gender in Revolutionary Contexts: The Case of Nicaragua Performances de genre en contextes révolutionnaires : le cas du Nicaragua Viria Delgadillo Introduction 1 Gender policies were at the heart of the 1980s Frente Sandinista de Liberación Nacional’s (FSLN) plans for social change. These policies were crucial to the legitimation of the Sandinista government, both domestically and abroad. In the existing literature on the Nicaraguan revolution, the issues of gender and legal reform as well as gender and revolutionary ideology have been dealt with at length. Molyneux’s (2001), Kampwirth’s (1998, 2006, 2013, 2015) and Montoya’s (2003) illuminating works on Sandinista law-making and gender ideology address how revolutionary ideology shapes legislation regarding women, LGBTQI individuals and the family. -

Abstract The problem facing the Cuban Revolution after 1959 was how to increase productive capacity and labour productivity, in conditions of underdevelopment and in transition to socialism, without relying on capitalist mechanisms that would undermine the formation of new consciousness and social relations integral to communism. Locating Guevara’s economic analysis at the heart of the research, the thesis examines policies and development strategies formulated to meet this challenge, thereby refuting the mainstream view that his emphasis on consciousness was idealist. Rather, it was intrinsic and instrumental to the economic philosophy and strategy for social change advocated. -
Che Guevara, Nostalgia, Photography, Felt History and Narrative Discourse in Ana Menéndez’S Loving Che Robert L
Hipertexto 11 Invierno 2010 pp. 103-116 Che Guevara, Nostalgia, Photography, Felt History and Narrative Discourse in Ana Menéndez’s Loving Che Robert L. Sims Virginia Commonwealth University Hipertexto At the risk of seeming ridiculous, let me say that the true revolutionary is guided by a great feeling of love. It is impossible to think of a genuine revolutionary lacking this quality. Che Guevara More and more I've come to understand that when we mourn what a place used to be, we are also mourning what we used to be. Ana Menéndez any of the discussions and debates of the Cuban Revolution in Miami, M Havana and elsewhere converge, merge and diverge in the person and persona of Che Guevara. This process produces a mesmerizing mixture of myth, reality, and nonsense which we are far from unscrambling: “There's just this fascination people have with the man - which is not of the man, but of the photograph," says Ana Menéndez, author of ‘Loving Che’” (http://www.csmonitor.com/2004/0305/p13s02-algn.html). The photograph in question is Alberto Korda’s famous picture of Che Guevara taken on March 5, 1960 at a Cuban funeral service for victims of the La Coubre explosion. The photographic reality of Che soon transformed itself into an iconic image which traveled around the world. Che’s image has since undergone myriad changes and has become a pop culture, fashionista icon and capitalist commodity marketed and sold all over the world, including Cuba. Nostalgia and memory occupy the interstitial space between Che Guevara’s personal and revolutionary life and his now simulacralized iconicity: “Part of Guevara's appeal is that his revolutionary ideals no longer pose much of a threat in the post-cold-war world. -
Hybridity and Identity in the Pan-American Jazz Piano Tradition

Heller, PhD Hybridity and Identity in the Pan-American Jazz Piano Tradition William D. Scott, PhD University of Pittsburgh, 2019 The term Latin jazz has often been employed by record labels, critics, and musicians alike to denote idioms ranging from Afro-Cuban music, to Brazilian samba and bossa nova, and more broadly to Latin American fusions with jazz. While many of these genres have coexisted under the Latin jazz heading in one manifestation or another, Panamanian pianist Danilo Pérez uses the expression “Pan-American jazz” to account for both the Afro-Cuban jazz tradition and non-Cuban Latin American fusions with jazz. Throughout this dissertation, I unpack the notion of Pan-American jazz from a variety of theoretical perspectives including Latinx identity discourse, transcription and musical analysis, and hybridity theory. -

SI CUBA DEPARTMENT OF STATE CUBA DEPARTMENT OF STATE Contents I. The Betrayal of the Cuban Revolution . 2 Establishment of the Communist II.TheBridgehead 11 III. The Delivery of the Revolution to the Sino-Soviet Bloc 19 IV. The Assault on the Hemisphere ... 25 V.Conclusion 33 CUBA The present situation in Cuba confronts the Western Hemisphere and the inter-American sys¬ tem with a grave and urgent challenge. This challenge does not result from the fact chat the Castro government in Cuba was established by revolution. The hemisphere rejoiced at the over¬ throw of the Batista tyranny, looked with sympathy on the new regime, and welcomed its promises of political freedom and social justice for the Cuban people. The challenge results from the fact thar the leaders of the revolutionary regime betrayed their own revolution, delivered that revolution into the hands of powers alien to the hemisphere, and transformed it into an instrument employed with 1 calculated effect to suppress the rekindled hopes of the Cuban people for democracy and to intervene in the internal affairs of other American Republics. What began as a movement to enlarge Cuban democracy and freedom has been perverted, in short, into a mechanism for the destruction of free institutions in Cuba, for the seizure by international communism of a base and bridgehead in the Amer¬ icas, and for the disruption of the inter-American system. It is the considered judgment of the Government of the United States of America that the Castro regime in Cuba offers a clear and present danger to the authentic and autonomous revolution of the Americas—to the whole hope of spreading politi¬ cal liberty, economic development, and social prog¬ ress through all the republics of the hemisphere. -
O Engajamento Radical De Carlos Marighella
Abstract: The article discusses the political action and the poetry of Carlos Marighella, showing in whi- ch way both activities formed a coherent attitude against the military dictatorship and denunciating the lack of freedom and several social and economic problems of Brazil. With the support of biographers, memorialists and novelists, I will try to show the way the libertarian poetry of Marighella is adapted to his “communist” and “guerrilla fighter” discourse, practice which turns him into a model of self-forge- tfulness and dedication to a “cause” by which he died fighting. Keywords: Carlos Marighella (1911-1969); military dictatorship; contemporaneous Brazilian literature; memoirs. 1 Doutor.
