This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Terrestrial and aquatic gastropods from the sparse non-marine fossil record of the Eocene in the Tethys upper Eocene (Priabonian) Zalumah Formation in the region. The occurrence of the genera Lanistes, Pila, and Salalah region of the Sultanate of Oman are described. The Gulella along with some pomatiids, probably related to assemblages reflect the composition of the continental extant genera, suggests that the modern African–Arabian mollusc fauna of the Palaeogene of Arabia, which, at that continental faunas can be partly traced back to Eocene time, formed parts of the southeastern Tethys coast. Sev- times and reflect very old autochthonous developments. It possesses high turriculate shells with concave whorls of moderate height. Because of the hollow columella it is assigned to the Umboniidae LYSSENKO& AllEY. The columella is hollow. Of the internal plaits, the adapical columellar plait is very small. The other columellar plait, the palatal plait and the parietal plait are strong. Because of the internal morphology, Adaptyxis is considered as transitional between the genus Affiniptyxis LYSSENKO& AllEY and Plesioplocus PCHELINTSEY.Synchronously, Neoptyxis PCHELINTSEY evolved from Affiniptyxis. Both genera are part of the Simploptyxidae HAKOBJAN.An origin of the Umboniidae and the Ptygmatidae from a Melanioptyxis-like group in the Jurassic is considered. It is not clear whether the Nerineidae originated from the same group as the other nerineacean families or from the Mathildoid family Anoptychoidae, as was postulated by BANDEL(1995).

The genera of Australian buliniform planorbids have been examined anatomically and their classifi~ation reviewed. The major conclusions reached are.: 1. Isidorella is not congeneric with Bulinus and is an endemic Australian genus; 2. Iredale's genera Lenameria, Tasmadora and Mutalena are synonyms of Physastra Tapparone-Canefri which, in turn, is a synonym of Glyptophysa Crosse. Glyptamoda Iredale is also a synonym of Glyptophysa; 3. Oppletora Iredale, synonymised with Bulinus by Hubendick, is actually related to Glyptophysa and is placed in a separate subgenus; 4. Ancylastrum Bourguignat has been examined and the results confirm Hubendick's opinion that this limpet-like genus is related to Glyptophysa. Two species can be separated by simple anatomical characters; 5. The genus Bayardella Burch includes two species, B. johni and B. cosmeta, the latter once considered to be a species of Glyptophysa; 6. Amerianna Strand includes species with either a terminal or lateral pore on a simple pendant penis; 7.
