It’s a tricky process, as this is a steeply terraced vineyard that reaches way back into the canyon behind the winery. But I’m excited about the Cabernet Sauvignon we’ll eventually get from these blocks. We know so much more now about rootstocks and clones and what works best with the soils and varietals we want to grow. The quality should be fantastic. In the meantime, we hope you’ll savor the wines in your shipment, especially the 2013 Rutherford Cabernet, one of my favorites. You can read about our Rutherford appellation vineyards in this issue. Over the years, these vineyards, and particularly certain blocks, have produced some of the finest wines we make. This vintage has earned six 91-plus scores so far, including 93 points from Wine Spectator. What makes this wine so special? The unique terroir of this renowned appellation. Even though Stags Leap District within Napa Valley is small, just one mile wide and three miles long, it Michael Beaulac boasts at least 15 distinct soils within its borders, allowing us to WINEMAKER & GM match rootstocks and clones to soil types with great precision. As diverse as the soils of Stags Leap District are, they have two important things in common: the good drainage and limited nutrition that force grapevines to struggle. When vines have to struggle to survive, they send their energy into producing routinely low yields of small clusters with intensely flavored grapes. Throughout the growing season, these clusters are swept by strong breezes from the south. As the sun sets, it hits the west-facing palisades and heats the air even further, fully developing the grapes’ varietal character. At night, cool air rushes in to maintain ideal, balanced acidity.     APPELLATION SOCIETY COLLECTORS CLUB SEPTEMBER 2015 \ GREETINGS, CLUB MEMBERS I’ve settled into my harvest routine: First thing in the morning I head to the winery and taste the fermenting grape juice in a few of the tanks to determine if the juice is ready to be pressed off the grape skins. Secondly, based on the juice samples tasted in the lab the day before, I visit the vineyards to taste for myself the grapes which are getting close to ripe. If I’m lucky I grab lunch and return to the winery - this time to taste from every tank to check the wine’s progress. Late afternoon I am back in the lab to taste more juice samples…and the cycle begins again. My palate gets a workout, but I love it! The wines in this month’s shipment are all three from stunning, grand vintages – worthy of cellaring, but perfectly enjoyable now. Two of the wines are vintage 2012 – the Oakville and Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon - and the 2013 vintage wine, Contemplate, is a blend crafted exclusively for our members. Enjoy! Michael Beaulac Winemaker, General Manager OUR CHIHULY GETS A DUSTING As a wine club member we hope you’ve visited our winery’s cave and have seen the amazing glass sculpture, “Persian Set with Ash Lip Wrap,” by renowned glass artist Dale Chihuly. If you’ve ever seen his work you know that it’s simply breathtaking – almost surreal in its beauty – and our yellow and gold-hued multi-piece sculpture is nothing less than spectacular. FORTIS was created in 2003 to be the best wine Pine Ridge Vineyards has to offer, the flagship wine in our portfolio. With 160 acres of estate vineyards throughout the Napa Valley’s most prestigious appellations, we are fortunate to have access to high-quality grapes to make an archetypal Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Every year we evaluate our estates and our decisions on blending our wines. A few of our vineyards in the Stags Leap District Michael Beaulac consistently impress us with exceptional quality. And, a few select WINEMAKER & GM blocks within those vineyards continue to rise to the top as the most outstanding. This year, as we celebrate our 40th anniversary as a leader in the Stags Leap District, we are proud to present a FORTIS wine that comes solely from these spectacular blocks. Three blocks from our Pine Ridge estate and one each from Circle Hill and Cornerstone vineyards were selected exclusively for FORTIS. These blocks have the perfect soils, sun exposures, and clones for Cabernet Sauvignon. The fruit expresses itself like no other, with superior depth and color. In the cellar, we ferment in puncheons, punching down the cap by hand, and age the wine for two-plus years in 100 percent new Seguin Moreau Icône French oak barrels. FORTIS is completely seamless, from start to finish. It shows more complexity and layering of flavors, is more compelling, and shows more finesse than any other wine in the Pine Ridge Vineyards portfolio.
