Journal of Social Welfare and Management49 Volume 5 Number 1, Jan - Mar 2013 Violence in Hindi Movies: A Comparative Study of Two Movies Sonalee Nargunde*, Iliyas Ahmad** Abstract Cinema in India has developed to a large extent and movies are its significant tool. Movies not only provide entertainment to the large audiences but also play some additional roles. The message provided by this medium is more impactful than any other medium because of its reach and easy accessibility. The content provided by the Indian films plays an important role in shaping up its audience. After, reviewing some of the movies, the researcher found a consistent theme of violence in almost all the films and found it important to share it with larger audience. Indian film industry produces more than 800 films annually and almost story line of all the movies is weaved around love, revenge, mafia wars and all this is supported by heavy dose of violence. Critics say that the Indian cinema nowadays is churning out films with persistent theme of violence because of the transplantation of the western ideas resulting in the portrayal of extreme vulgarity on big screen. Film makers follow the steps of Hollywood where most of the movies are much more violent than the bollywood. Movies released in the last few years have seen a continuous increase in the portrayal of violence both in content and subject wise. Keywords: Film violence; Bollywood; Movies. Introduction the story demands. The unapologetic use of blood and gore presented in the form of entertainment seems to have become the A film is a form of entertainment based on mainstay of bollywood releases especially since a story where different artists perform different last decade.

HENEVER an Indian achieves a Wmilestone abroad, he instantly gets more recognition in his own coun- try. Perhaps it's the colonial hangover that still makes us believe that they are always right over there. In this case however, the distinction is not going to make any difference as the person gaining it is already a household name here. Rahul Dev Burman, who has given music for 225 Hindi films, has made it to the New York hit parade with a song titled In every city. He is all set to launch the album—'Pantera'—in India. Two people have been responsible for getting him there—his father Sachin Dev Burman who was the only member of the family willing to let him enter films, and Pete Gavankar, a friend of thirty years who goaded him into seek- ing new pastures and has financed the album. Intrigued, we decided to find out just how the international album had come about and while we were at it, also gauge just how much R.D. had already packed into his life of 45 years. It turned out to be much more than we had thought as we had to have several sittings before we were through. But R.D.

Hindu-Muslim Relationship in Bollywood in post 26/11: A Content Analysis of Movies (2008-2018) Maziar Mozaffari Falarti,1 Hamideh Molaei,2 Asra Karim3 1. Assistant Professor of South, East Asia and Oceania Studies, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran (Corresponding author) ([email protected]) 2. Assistant Professor of South, East Asia and Oceania Studies, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran ([email protected]) 3. M. A. in Indian Studies, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran ([email protected]) (Received: Jan. 2, 2019 Revised: Feb. 28, 2019 Accepted: Ma r. 28, 2019) Abstract This study investigates the representations of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies from 2008 to 2018. It is assumed that after 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which are known as 26/11, conflicts between Hindus and Muslims have escalated. Since Indian people are extreme fans of movies, especially Bollywood movies, in this regard, it is expected that media could play a significant role in increasing or alleviating the conflicts by influencing people’s attitudes and opinions. This research seeks to examine the extent and modality of the representation of Hindu-Muslim relationships in Bollywood after the 2008 Mumbai attacks. The study was conducted through a content analysis of 11 Bollywood movies, which were selected from 70 Muslim-characters-based movies. Favorable, unfavorable, neutral and unclear were the four factors through which the movies’ contents were analyzed. The overall analysis of these factors indicate that 66.17% of the scenes were favorable, 14.70% were unfavorable, 2.94% were neutral, and 16.17% presented unclear images of Hindu-Muslim relationship in Bollywood movies.

Draft for the Kathmandu workshop on 'Creation of Public Meaning during Nepal's Democratic Transition' (4-5 September 2011); DO NOT CITE or QUOTE Resurgence of ‘Nepali National Identity’ in the Age of Identity Politics and Media Globalization: Prashant Tamang’s Performance in Indian Idol 3 and Discourses in Nepali Print Media By Harsha Man Maharjan 1. Introduction Prashant Tamang, the winner of Indian Idol 3, a reality show of Indian television channel, Sony Entertainment Television (SET), got a contract of a music album with Sony BGM Music Entertainment (India) Pvt.Ltd, as a prize and he named it Dhanyavad, a Nepali word for Thanks. It was released in November 2007, and contained 11 songs: three Nepali and eight Hindi songs. It was different from what previous winners did: they came up with their albums containing Hindi songs only. Why was this difference? According to Tamang, who hails from Darjeling, and a member of West Bengal Police, this album was a tribute for Nepali community who were living in India and abroad, and who voted passionately for him while he was participating in the program.1 Since then he had acted in three films in Nepali language as hero, and the first of them, Gorkhapalatan was big hit. It is interesting that Amit Paul, who became second in the program, had sung a song in Hindi movie, Luck By Chance and few others participants are hosting programs in Indian TV channels. All name and limelight Tamang is having is definitely the result of his celebrity figure as an Indian Idol.

  • 'Ambedkar's Constitution': a Radical Phenomenon in Anti-Caste
Article CASTE: A Global Journal on Social Exclusion Vol. 2 No. 1 pp. 109–131 brandeis.edu/j-caste April 2021 ISSN 2639-4928 DOI: 10.26812/caste.v2i1.282 ‘Ambedkar’s Constitution’: A Radical Phenomenon in Anti-Caste Discourse? Anurag Bhaskar1 Abstract During the last few decades, India has witnessed two interesting phenomena. First, the Indian Constitution has started to be known as ‘Ambedkar’s Constitution’ in popular discourse. Second, the Dalits have been celebrating the Constitution. These two phenomena and the connection between them have been understudied in the anti-caste discourse. However, there are two generalised views on these aspects. One view is that Dalits practice a politics of restraint, and therefore show allegiance to the Constitution which was drafted by the Ambedkar-led Drafting Committee. The other view criticises the constitutional culture of Dalits and invokes Ambedkar’s rhetorical quote of burning the Constitution.
