This lecture recital seeks to prove that Sergei Taneyev’s only piano concerto is a valuable addition to the piano concerto repertoire for historical and theoretical examination. Taneyev’s biographical background proves he was one of the major figures in Russian musical life during the late nineteenth century. For one who had such an important role in music history, it is an unfortunate that his music has not been popular. Through letters to contemporary composers and friends, Taneyev’s master teacher Tchaikovsky revealed why his music and piano concerto were not as popular as they should have been. This lecture recital examines Taneyev’s compositional style and illustrates his influence in the works of his famous student Sergei Rachmaninoff through examples from Taneyev’s Piano Concerto in E-flat Major and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.

The fact that a number of pianists of the past two centuries adapted, embellished, and rearranged piano works for performance, be these original works or transcriptions, has been well documented throughout history. This thought, in addition to the fact that Stradal’s scores needed revision, encouraged me to make alterations to Stradal’s transcriptions and served as a strong incentive to write the current study. In it, I will comment on the alterations performed to segments of Stradal’s piano transcriptions of Wagner’s Schluβ der letzten Aufzuges (End of the last Act) from Siegfried and Trauermusik aus dem letzten Aufzug (Siegfried’s Funeral March) from Götterdämmerung. These changes have the purpose of reflecting in the piano as closely as possible the sonorous reality of the transcriptions’ operatic sources and, by doing so, making Stradal’s arrangements more effective for performance.

We will offer a rich program of 11 lecture-recitals, 17 research papers, nine posters, two panels, and six concerts. Among the many performances of compositions by CMS and NACUSA Texas composers, we will be able to enjoy 10 world premiere performances. We are especially delighted to welcome our Keynote Speaker, the well-known American composer Charles H. Ruggiero, who will present the keynote lecture on “Creative Collaborations: A Composer’s Perspective.” Two of his compositions will be performed by saxophonist Joseph Lulloff and pianist Jun Okada. Furthermore, an invited recital will be given by flutist Danilo Mezzadri, accompanied by pianist Faith DeBow. As part of the conference, the Annual NACUSA Texas Membership Meeting will take place on Thursday, March 9, after the evening concert. The Annual CMS South Central Membership Meeting will take place on Friday, March 10, immediately following the Conference Luncheon. Composers have used certain themes repeatedly as thematic sources for variations. Among them, Paganini's Caprice No. 24 in A minor is certainly the best known, since the theme has inspired many composers for variations of their own. The purpose of this study is to analyze different sets of Variations on Paganini' s theme by Franz Liszt, Witold Lutoslawbski, Johannes Brahms, and Sergei Rachmaninoff, in order to examine, identify, and trace how far an original idea can be stretched by using different variations techniques and their applications. Liszt transcribed Paganini' s 24th Caprice for the piano, adding a multi-layered sound to the original Caprice. His treatment of the Paganini theme is the most literal. Lutoslawski's Paganini Variations is written for duo piano. This piece builds on Liszt's transcription technique: it stays close to the original Paganini Caprice, but at the same time overlays many 20th century compositional devices such as atonality and complex rhythmic devices. Lutoslawski carries Liszt one step further away from Paganini's original theme. In his Variations on a Theme ofPaganini, op. 35, Brahms keeps the clear structure and strong harmonic progression of the original theme, but carries his invention further away from the source than Liszt and Lutoslawski.
