2021 Spring/Summer Series
Dear Patrons, Welcome back to live events at the Bologna Performing Arts Center! We are excited to have artists returning to our stage, and look forward to inviting you to attend shows again. Things will be a little different this spring and summer. Due to the ongoing nature of the pandemic, we are going to put each show on sale individually, about 4-6 weeks before each event. This allows us to make sure we are following the most recent executive orders, including audience capacity guidelines. Please refer to the on-sale dates for each artist in this brochure. Seating has been reduced for our Spring/Summer Series, and is being sold in staggered pairs and groups. We ask that you purchase all of the seats in the grouping to ensure that patrons are comfortable being seated together. At this time, all patrons are required to wear masks during their visit to the Bologna Performing Arts Center. All of our staff and volunteers will also wear masks, and do daily temperature checks and symptom monitoring. We ask you to please monitor your own health, and stay home if you do not feel well. We have also increased our cleaning and sanitation regimens. We have invested in new cleaning systems to ensure that the theater is totally sanitized prior to every performance. [Queen Bitch] David Robert Jones was born on January 8 1947 in Brixton London England. Though he showed musical interest at a young age it was only in the early 60s that he really pursued the art. He started by joining several blues bands but branched off on his own when they had little success. Renaming himself David Bowie he released his self-titled debut in 1967. [Who's that hiding in the apple tree clinging to a branch] Its lack of success led Bowie to participate in a promotional film called Love you till Tuesday which showcased several of his songs. A particular interest was Space Oddity : that track became a hit after it was released at the same time as the first moon landing. [Ground control to Major Tom] His sophomore effort of the same name however was another commercial disappointment. [The man who sold the world] To promote his third album The man who sold the world, Bowie was put in a dress to capitalize on his androgynous look. [Life on mars] [Ziggy Stardust] In 1971 a pop influenced record called Hunky-Dory came out and was followed by the creation of his flamboyant Ziggy Stardust persona and stage show with backing band The Spiders from Mars. Then came his breakthrough record The rise and fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars which climbed the charts thanks to his performance of the single Star Man on Top of the Pops. -

Anti-Racism Resources Prepared for and by: The First Church in Oberlin United Church of Christ Part I: Statements Why Black Lives Matter: Statement of the United Church of Christ Our faith's teachings tell us that each person is created in the image of God (Genesis 1:27) and therefore has intrinsic worth and value. So why when Jesus proclaimed good news to the poor, release to the jailed, sight to the blind, and freedom to the oppressed (Luke 4:16-19) did he not mention the rich, the prison-owners, the sighted and the oppressors? What conclusion are we to draw from this? Doesn't Jesus care about all lives? Black lives matter. This is an obvious truth in light of God's love for all God's children. But this has not been the experience for many in the U.S. In recent years, young black males were 21 times more likely to be shot dead by police than their white counterparts. Black women in crisis are often met with deadly force. Transgender people of color face greatly elevated negative outcomes in every area of life. When Black lives are systemically devalued by society, our outrage justifiably insists that attention be focused on Black lives. When a church claims boldly "Black Lives Matter" at this moment, it chooses to show up intentionally against all given societal values of supremacy and superiority or common-sense complacency. By insisting on the intrinsic worth of all human beings, Jesus models for us how God loves justly, and how his disciples can love publicly in a world of inequality. -

POV Community Engagement & Education DISCUSSION GUIDE American Revolutionary: The Evolution of Grace Lee Boggs A Film by Grace Lee Produced by Grace Lee, Caroline Libresco and Austin Wilkin www.pbs.org/pov LETTER FROM THE FILMMAKER I first met Grace Lee Boggs in 2000 while filming “The Grace Lee Project,” a documentary about the many women who share our common name and the model minority stereotype of Asian Americans. From the moment I met Boggs, I knew I would have to make a longer film just about her. Over the years, I would return to Detroit, hang out in her kitchen and living room and watch her hold in thrall everyone from journalists to renowned activists to high school students. I recognized the same thing in myself that I saw in all of them—eagerness to connect with someone who seemed to embody history itself. As someone who came of age in the era of identity politics, I would have found it hard to ignore the fascinating details of how this Chinese-American woman became a Black Power activist in Detroit. But Boggs would constantly use our interview sessions to turn the questions back on me. “What do you think about that? How do you feel about what's happening in Korea? Tell me more about your own story,” she would say as soon as the cameras turned off. My own identity is more wrapped up in Boggs’s story than she knows. And it’s not because we share the same name. Boggs’s presence—in Detroit, in the world and in my imagination—has helped transform my own thinking about how to tell a story about someone like her. -
