Between 1850 and 1945 hundreds of globetrotters travelled the world in extravagant ways, without the knowledge, experience or funding necessary for the assignment. Events and personal stories which provides an interesting key to interpreting tourism development. The Globetrotters Directory offers an incomplete collection of those eclectic figures, edited mainly using written sources (books, periodicals and postcards). As noted by several researchers, some of those adventures are faked and thus it makes it more complicated to deal with this question. Finally, it was also noted that a significant number of adventures left very little evidence: the information retrieval is just at the beginning! Anne and Graham Gieg have been gathering clues since last May about the odyssey of Graham's great uncle, Leland Abbott, and his friend Hector Despins, and plan to write a book about the off-beat adventure. "It's the family legend," says Gieg, who recalls a visit to his great-uncle's house when he was 10 years old. "The house was full of incredible keepsakes from all the places he'd travelled." Unfortunately, much of that material has been lost. "It's been a bit of a detective story," he says. The Giegs have been gathering material from newspapers, family members and the Hudson's Bay Company archives, and by soliciting memories from people who met the mushers during their trip. The story is an intriguing tale of contrasting worlds, says Gieg, containing within it the wilderness of the North and the metropolis of New York City, the solitude of the trapper's life and life in the media spotlight. It's also the story of one last civilian adventure before the attention of the world -- and the energies of the two adventurers -- became focused on the Second World War. Abbott and Despins were trapping muskrats and guiding mineral prospectors around a settlement called Tavane, in what is now Nunavut, when they read a six-month-old magazine article about people travelling to the New York World's Fair by unusual means. As muskrat pelts weren't fetching much of a price at the time, they decided in the fall of 1938 to mush to the fair at Flushing Meadows, N.Y. The trip was full of unexpected twists and turns. They ran out of snow around Dauphin, and a farmer helped them to create a wheeled sled. Unfortunately, the powerful sled dogs were no match for the home-made contraption and it fell apart soon after. From Winnipeg on, the mushers travelled on a more durable wheeled sled made from a car chassis, following a convoluted route that took them to Chicago via Iowa. Chicago turned out to be a rough town, even with Al Capone in jail, and the duo nearly rolled into a bank robbery and shootout. That's not the only aspect of the story that seems made for Hollywood. Abbott actually met his wife-to-be during a stop in Pennsylvania. Arriving in New York in April, 1939, in time for the opening of the World's Fair, Despins and Abbott and their dogs became celebrities. "The lead dog is supposed to have been the first dog on television," says Gieg, explaining that RCA first unveiled the brand-new technology at the New York fair. "This was 20 years before Lassie." They visited hospitals, participated in a travelling show, and attended openings of a James Cagney movie called Torrid Zone and, more appropriately perhaps, a Sgt. Preston movie. They also met boxing champion Joe Louis, according to legend, taking the dog team to the boxer's training camp in New Jersey. Eventually they returned to Canada to enlist in the Armed Forces. Despins was declared medically unfit because of an earlier injury, says Gieg, but he ended up driving bulldozers during the construction of the Alaska Highway in 1942-43. Abbott joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941 and became a bomber pilot. After the war, Despins became a mining engineer and was involved in developing Thompson's nickel mining industry. Abbott "fell in love with the ocean," says Gieg, and eventually opened a fish business on the coast called Eskimo Abbott's Frozen Fish. Fascinating as the journey was, the Giegs have discovered that it was by no means unique. A string of Canadian adventurers undertook long dog sled trips in the 1930s, including William Campbell, who mushed from The Pas to Chicago for the 1933 World's Fair, and King Taylor, who mushed from The Pas to Halifax and back. The Giegs expect to spend another year digging up details of the journey, and hope to wrap up their investigation by following the dog sledders' path -- in a more conventional vehicle. Anyone with information about the adventure can call the Giegs at 832-2606. Schwert - Skills and guides - Library - Publication: Thursday 24 March 2005 Description : 78 years after Lillian Alling began her journey home; questions and the mystery still remain. Calvin Rutstrum first introduced me to this remarkable women's walk across the US and Canada, and recently Cassandra Pybus has attempted to fill in some of the details. Copyright (c) Outdoors-Magazine.com under a Creative Commons Attribution-Non-Commercial-Share Alike License Copyright © Outdoors-Magazine.com Page 1/8 The Quest for Lillian Alling: Two authors contributions. Introductory paragraphs found in Calvin Rutstrum's wilderness how-to manuals (Way of the Wilderness and New Way of the Wilderness) were always interesting to me, but would have slipped by essentially unnoticed, except for his reiteration of Lillian's story in his 1980 Hiking Back to Health. Calvin retells the story again to illustrate what a person can do if willing and determined, but this time expands this into a complete chapter; fills in some additional details and included a photograph of her and her dog. He also reveals that he had attempted over the years to determine her fate after she presumably left Alaska. Cassandra Pybus, in The Women Who Walked to Russia: A Writer's Search for a Lost Legend, combines her attempts to uncover the mystery and motivation of Lillian Alling's 1927-1929 walk across the United States and Canada, with her road trip through British Columbia following Alling's route north.

  • Writing the Bicycle
Writing the Bicycle: Women, Rhetoric, and Technology in Late Nineteenth-Century America Sarah Overbaugh Hallenbeck A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2009 Approved by: Jane Danielewicz Jordynn Jack Daniel Anderson Jane Thrailkill Beverly Taylor ABSTRACT Sarah Overbaugh Hallenbeck Writing the Bicycle: Women, Rhetoric, and Technology in Late Nineteenth-Century America (Under the direction of Jane Danielewicz and Jordynn Jack) This project examines the intersections among rhetoric, gender, and technology, examining in particular the ways that American women appropriated the new technology of the bicycle at the turn of the twentieth century. It asks: how are technologies shaped by discourse that emanates both from within and beyond professional boundaries? In what ways do technologies, in turn, reshape the social networks in which they emerge—making available new arguments and rendering others less persuasive? And to what extent are these arguments furthered by the changed conditions of embodiment and materiality that new technologies often initiate? Writing the Bicycle: Women, Rhetoric and Technology in Late Nineteenth- Century America addresses these questions by considering how women’s interactions with the bicycle allowed them to make new claims about their minds and bodies, and transformed the gender order in the process. The introduction, “Rhetoric, Gender, Technology,” provides an overview of the three broad conversations to which the project primarily contributes: science and technology studies, feminist historiography, and rhetorical theory. In addition, it outlines a “techno-feminist” materialist methodology that emphasizes the material ii and rhetorical agency of users in shaping technologies beyond their initial design and distribution phases.

If it be ever of interest and profit to put one's finger on the productive germ of a work of art, and if in fact a lucid account of any such work involves that prime identification, I can but look on the present fiction as a poor fatherless and motherless, a sort of unregistered and unacknowledged birth. I fail to recover my precious first moment of consciousness of the idea to which it was to give form; to recognise in it--as I like to do in general--the effect of some particular sharp impression or concussion.

Reviews of Books The Letters of John McLoughlin from Fort Vancouver to the Governor and Committee, second series, 1839-44 (Hudson's Bay Record So ciety, Publications, vol. 6). Edited by E. E. RICH, M.A. With an introduction by W. KAYE LAMB, Ph.D. (Published by the Cham plain Society for the Hudson's Bay Record Society, 1943. xlix, 427 p. Illustrations.) It is seldom that a book of many documents reduces itself so simply as this one to the discussion of a few topics. As the introduction reveals in clear-cut fashion, these letters show that two decisions of Sir George Simp son in 1841 and 1842 brought about a rupture in the friendship so long sustained between him and Dr. John McLoughlin. The first decision was the result of Simpson's visit to the Northwest coast on his famous earth- girdling trip, and consisted of two parts: to reduce the number of trading posts, for the establishment and prestige of which McLoughlin had been pridefuUy responsible; and, in consequence of this decrease in land estab lishments, to make the company's steamer of paramount importance on that coast, despite McLoughlin's known opposition to that course. Mc Loughlin felt that he had been humiliated by this decision of his superior officer, which reversed his own conclusions and seemed to indicate poor judgment on his part. The second decision was Simpson's hasty, opportunistic, and cold-blooded verdict as to the cause of the murder of McLoughlin's mixed-blood son, John McLoughlin, who was in charge of the Stikine post in his father's jurisdiction at the time of the tragedy.

In this dissertation I argue for an environmentally minded Atlantic history, one that is conscious of the ocean as both a cultural and a physical presence. The ocean shaped an early modern Atlantic vernacular that was at its essence maritime, godly, anxious and sociable. The ocean was a conduit to empire, so anything Britons imagined about the oceans, they imagined about their empire as well. Britons could never fully master their empire because they could never master the ocean; it was source of anxiety for even the wealthiest merchants. The fear of extremity – of wreck and ruin – kept those who crossed the ocean focused on the three most valuable Atlantic commodities: a sound reputation, accurate information, and the mercy of God.
