From the Pastor’s Desk… We Three Kings This weekend we celebrate the epiphany. This word, coming from the Greek epiphainein meaning “to reveal,” refers to Christ’s manifestation as God to the world. The Liturgical calendar in the United States places it on the Sunday between January 2nd and January 8th, but in many countries and cultures it is still celebrated on its traditional date of January 6th, the twelfth day of Christmas, known as “Little Christmas” or “Three Kings Day.” Celebrations abound in the streets with processions of costumed kings riding camels, with giftgiving happening more so on this day than Christmas in of the gifts presented to the infant Jesus. There is the traditional Kings Bread or Kings Cake, a round sweet bread in the shape of a crown in which a figurine of the infant Jesus is baked. Whoever gets the slice with the baby Jesus gets to be king for the day, and in some cultures is given the task of making a traditional cultural meal on Candlemas Day (February 2). Although Kings Cake is often associated with Mardi Gras, its original place was in the celebration of Three Kings Day. The popular song, “We Three Kings” gives us some insight into the celebration of the epiphany, but also a few challenges. First, were there really “three” “kings?” According to the biblical account of the visit of these men to the infant Jesus, the text simply says “behold, magi from the east arrived.” So the first question we may ask is what are “magi”? The Greek word magos can refer to a member of the Persian priestly class, or to one who possesses occult knowledge and power, or to a magician or even a charlatan. It is understood in the context of the biblical reading that these magi were likely possessors of the knowledge of astrology implied by their study of the stars. So they are not really kings at all, but men learned in astrology. Scholars believe that the “east” from which they came was likely Babylonia. The Scripture passage also never mentions how many there were. The tradition of “three” likely arises from the three gifts Scripture mentions: Then they opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. Three gifts are mentioned in Scripture. If there are three gifts, it was assumed there must be three gift givers, hence the “three kings.” Now the gifts that are presented have very special meaning, as illuminated by the traditional song. Born a king on ’s plain, Gold I bring to crown him again, King forever, ceasing never, over us all to reign. The gold then, is a tribute to Christ’s universal, everlasting kingship. Frankincense to offer have I, incense owns a Deity nigh; Prayer and praising Gladly raising, Worship him, God on high. Incense was traditional burned as an offering to God. In the Temple it was offered morning and evening in the holy of holies. Zechariah, father of was a temple priest whom Scripture mentions making such an offering (cf. Lk. 1:810). Incense was also used in pagan rituals. In early , Roman authorities often demanded that incense be offered by to the emperor or to other Roman gods. Those who refused were put to death. Incense (or frankincense as the song and scripture say) recognizes the Christ child’s divinity. Finally, Myrrh is mine; its bitter perfume breathes a life of gathering gloom; Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, Sealed in the stonecold tomb. Myrrh was a burial spice used in the ancient near east for embalming. The presentation of this gift foreshadows what lay in store for the Christ child in his crucifixion and death. In John’s account of Jesus’ burial (Jn. 19:38ff) Joseph of Arimathea asks for the body of Jesus and Nicodemus comes “bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes weighing about one hundred pounds” to prepare his body for burial. Even from the Christmas crib, the reason for Jesus’ birth is noted: that his death and resurrection will accomplish God’s saving work. May Christ’s Epiphany bring renewed hope to us all!

Embarking on a new ministry can be worrisome in the best of times. So, with slight trepidation and great faith we stepped in Ruth Pinto’s former role chairing the Christmas Sharing Ministry.Over many years of dedicated service Ruth had developed an excellent system of gathering, sorting, and distributing the gifts. Our trepidation lied with the pandemic and our faith lied with you, the parishioners of St. George. As always you came through! The response to the Christmas Sharing was tremendous. We greatly exceeded our expectations and the Agencies we work with were very thankful for your generosity and commitment to our Christian faith. Your kindness and caring will have a positive impact on many families in our area this Christmas season. We would also like to thank Ruth for her continued guidance, the peer ministers for their assistance gathering and sorting gifts, and the staff at St. George for their patience and support. With grateful hearts we wish you a Blessed New Year. Sharon Costello and Renee Meskill.

Saint of the Week St. Basil and St. Gregory Nazianzen January 2nd honors two who were very close friends, having studied together at Caesaria, Constantinople and . St. Basil came from a devout Christian family: his grandmother, parents and eldest sister are all saints, and two of his brothers were also : and Peter of Sebaste. Basil was born in 330 in (modern Turkey) and after his baptism, probably in 358, he entered monastic life. Basil founded a cenobitic monastery (where the focus is on communal prayer, a strict rule and manual labor) and proceeded to write two Rules for monastic life containing general norms in one and a collection of exhortations in the other. He became of Caesarea in 370 and defended the faith against (the heresy that denies the true divinity of Christ). He is described as being a gentle, prudent bishop who organized many charities. Gregory Nazianzen, born around 330 also came from a family that produced many saints. After his studies alongside Basil, Gregory joined him in monastic life, but that would be shortlived. He was called home to care for his ailing father St. Gregory Nazianzen the Elder, a bishop himself, and to assist in watching over his diocese. The elder Gregory ordained his son a priest (in those early days, priests and bishops were often married) and ten years later, the younger Gregory was reluctantly ordained bishop. Like Basil, Gregory was a consummate scholar and wrote prolifically on the nature of the Trinity which would have been an important topic of that time. He presided for a time over the First Council of Constantinople (381) but when his transfer to Constantinople was disputed, he resigned to maintain peace and unity. He spent the last years of his life in seclusion and died around 389. Both Basil and Gregory are honored as Doctors of the Church.

Bless Your Door on Epiphany The Gospel tells us that the Magi found Christ “on entering the house.” The door to your home is a holy threshold. You can bless those who come in and go out by inscribing above the door in chalk the first two numbers of the year+C+M+B+the last two numbers of the year. Tradition tells us that the letters stand for the names of the magi: Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar. Adolph Adam points out that it may also mean “Christus mansionem benedicat” or “May Christ bless this dwelling.” It’s appropriate to bless your door in JanuaryNjanua means “door” and the first month is the door to the new year. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we will not be providing chalk that has been blessed to you this year. Chalk purchased from the store or even chalk left over from previous blessing years will be sufficient. Suggested Blessing for the Home on Epiphany The members of the household gather at the main door to the home. Read the story of the Magi from Matthew’s Gospel Chapter 2, verses 112. Inscribe 20+C+M+B+21 above the door with chalk. Pray the following blessing prayer: God of Bethlehem and Cana, God of Jordan’s leaping waters, in baptism you bring us into your family. You wed us and embrace us as your beloved. May we fill this place with kindness to one another, with hospitality to guest, and with abundant care for every stranger. By the gentle light of a star, guide home all who seek you on paths of faith, hope and love. Then we will join the angels in proclaiming your praise: Glory in heaven and peace on earth, now and for ever. Amen. Conclude with a song such as “We Three Kings” or “O Come All Ye Faithful.”
