DIPLOMARBEIT Titel der Diplomarbeit Placid Podipara´s Reflection on the Church “St. Thomas Christians are Indian in Culture” Verfasser Lijo Joseph angestrebter akademischer Grad Magister der Theologie (Mag. theol.) Wien, 2015 Studienkennzahl lt. Studienblatt: A 011 Studienrichtung lt. Studienblatt: Diplomstudium Katholische Fachtheologie Betreuer: Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Rudolf Prokschi 2 Dedicated to all the members of the Syro-Malabar Church 3 4 Acknowledgements This is a master’s degree thesis investigate on Placid Podipara’s reflection on the Church “St. Thomas Christians are Indian in culture”. It is a humble attempt to know how Fr. Placid Podipara understood the birth and spread of Christianity through the preaching of St. Thomas the Apostle. With the passage of time, Christian religion rooted well, adapting itself to the customs and practices of the place. There was no attempt on the part of Christians to remain aloof from a given society or tried to remain a separate entity. The Church has accepted, absorbed, and assimilated itself to the good elements of Indian culture. With deep sense of gratitude, I acknowledge the valuable contribution of some important persons who helped me to complete this task. I am thankful to my bishop, Mar Mathew Arackal, Bishop of Kanjirappally, India, who sent me to Austria to do my theological studies in the University of Vienna. Gratefully I acknowledge the role of Univ.-Prof. Mag. Dr. Rudolf Prokschi for his valuable suggestions, corrections, and guidance. I thank Fr. Stephan Mararikulam MSFS, Fr. Joy Plathottathil SVD, Stefan Jahns, Dr. Daniel Galadza, and Michaela Zachs for the correction of the language and suggestions.

  • SYNAXARION, COPTO-ARABIC, List of Saints Used in the Coptic Church
(CE:2171b-2190a) SYNAXARION, COPTO-ARABIC, list of saints used in the Coptic church. [This entry consists of two articles, Editions of the Synaxarion and The List of Saints.] Editions of the Synaxarion This book, which has become a liturgical book, is very important for the history of the Coptic church. It appears in two forms: the recension from Lower Egypt, which is the quasi-official book of the Coptic church from Alexandria to Aswan, and the recension from Upper Egypt. Egypt has long preserved this separation into two Egypts, Upper and Lower, and this division was translated into daily life through different usages, and in particular through different religious books. This book is the result of various endeavors, of which the Synaxarion itself speaks, for it mentions different usages here or there. It poses several questions that we cannot answer with any certainty: Who compiled the Synaxarion, and who was the first to take the initiative? Who made the final revision, and where was it done? It seems evident that the intention was to compile this book for the Coptic church in imitation of the Greek list of saints, and that the author or authors drew their inspiration from that work, for several notices are obviously taken from the Synaxarion called that of Constantinople. The reader may have recourse to several editions or translations, each of which has its advantages and its disadvantages. Let us take them in chronological order. The oldest translation (German) is that of the great German Arabist F. Wüstenfeld, who produced the edition with a German translation of part of al-Maqrizi's Khitat, concerning the Coptic church, under the title Macrizi's Geschichte der Copten (Göttingen, 1845).

  • The Passion of St. George Translated by E
The Passion of St. George Translated by E. A. W Budge Written by Abba Theodotus, Bishop of Ancyra in Glaatia in 431 AD Icon: 14th century ~ From the Maniokhin Church in Paskhov District., Russia. The Encomium which the blessed Abba Theodotus, Bishop of Ancyra in Galatia, pronounced on the day of the glorious commemoration - which is the twenty-third of the month Pharmuthi - of Saint George, the martyr of Diospolis of [p. 275] Palestine, the sun of the truth, the star of the morning, the mighty man of the Galileans from Melitene and the valiant soldier of Christ; and he showed forth his family relationships and the mighty conflicts which he endured, and the honours which he received in heaven; in the peace of God, Amen. 1 It is meet and right and fitting for our souls, O holy beloved, that we should commemorate the sufferings and honourable contests of the saints, and more especially of Saint George the mighty, the most excellent and honourable athlete and warrior - whose festival we celebrate today in this glorious commemoration - who has shown himself to us approved by God and loveworthy before men, by reason of the righteous deeds which he displayed, through which he was worthy of being called into the healthful sufferings of Christ and of bearing wounds in his body for Christ's sake. He was perfect in great endurance, and mighty valor, and a pure heart, and in giving up his entire will to God through the great zeal which he had in his heart towards God, and in the fear of Him which he had within him, which bore fruit plentifully to Him a hundredfold, sixtyfold, and thirtyfold.

08/15/2021 Saint George The Great Martyr Eastern, Orthodox Church Hesperia CA.92345 TEL:760-244-9223 Dn.George: 760-792-8604 Website:WWW.STgeorgeoca.org 8th Sunday after Pentecost The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary in today’s Gospel reading, we learn that even the lord needed a place of solitude, a quiet place to meditate and pray. To withdraw from the world around him. We hear that the news somehow and not surprisingly got out. And a great multitude was waiting for him! The Lord seeing the multitude had compassion on them, healed them and taught them, and wanted to feed them. But his disciples still lacking in complete faith were not sure how they can provide for such a crowd (over five thousand men beside women and children). This event dear brothers and sisters is so important it is recorded in all four Gospels! And it is a sign not understood by the people! They thought he filled their belly with five loves and two fishes! But the lord referred to himself as the (bread of life, he that comes to him shall never hunger. And he that believes in him shall never thirst). Today we also celebrate the Dormition of the most Holy Theotokos and ever Virgin Mary. Judging from the reading one will draw the conclusion that it doesn’t have anything to do with her Dormition. But in fact this reading is read several times a year to celebrate the Mother of God! In Philippians we hear Saint Paul telling them and us to be obedient and humble.

It was painted in oil son canvas in about 1460. These notes and a large print of Uccello’s ‘Saint George and the Dragon’ are for primary teachers attending the one-day course‘ Telling Pictures’ at the National Gallery during 2001/2002. Cross-curricular work produced in schools as a result of these courses will be shown in an exhibition at the National Gallery in 2003 as part of the Gallery’s Take One Picture project. The notes contain basic information about the painting and the artist, as well as suggestions for classroom activities and curriculum links. The Take One Picture project is generously supported by Mr and Mrs Christoph Henkel. Open daily 10am – 6pm Charing Cross / Leicester Square Fridays until 9pm www.nationalgallery.org.uk 2 PRIMARY TEACHERS’ NOTES What is the subject of the painting? This picture shows two episodes from the story of Saint George. First, the saint with his lance defeats a plague-bearing dragon that had been terrorising a city. Behind the unusual, two- limbed dragon is a large cave with water on the ground. In the second episode, the rescued princess brings the dragon to heel, using her blue belt as a leash. It is perhaps evening, or early morning, as there is a tiny crescent moon at the top right-hand side of the picture.

Forgiveness Sunday “This is none other than the House of God. The Holy Fathers have appointed the commemoration of Adam's exile from the And this is the Gate of Heaven” Paradise of delight here, on the eve of the holy Forty- Genesis 28:17 day Fast, demonstrating to us not by simple words, but by actual deeds, how beneficial fasting is for man, and how harmful and destructive are insatiety and the trans- gressing of the divine commandments. For the first commandment that God gave to man was that of fast- ing, which the first-fashioned received but did not keep; and not only did they not become gods, as they had imagined, but they lost even that blessed life which they had, and they fell into corruption and death, and transmitted these and innumerable other evils to all of mankind. The God-bearing Fathers set these things before us today, that by bring- ing to mind what we have fallen from, and what we have suffered because of the insatiety and disobedience of the first-fashioned, we might be diligent to return again to that ancient bliss and glory by means of fasting and obedience to all the divine commands. Taking occasion from today's Gospel (Matt. 6:14-21) to begin the Fast unencumbered by enmity, we also ask forgiveness this day, first from God, then from one another and all creation. THE LORD’S PRAYER (In English and Phonetic Arabic) ur Father who art in heaven, Hallowed-be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
