Welcome to St. George Greek Orthodox Church

From the desk of Fr. Neofitos

On Sunday, June 13 we celebrated our first Ministry and Church leadership Appreciation Day. We honored our many ministry leaders and program heads. To these individuals is due credit and gratitude from all of us. For me, these individuals represent model in the struggle to live a spiritual life. These individuals offer their time, talents, and treasure without hesitation for their own spiritual enrichment and for their church. In considering what small appreciation we can give back to them, we could think of nothing better than a small certificate of appreciation and a small series of icons whish are depicted on these pages.

First, we call these individuals trophy bearers as to mirror our patron , Saint George the Trophy Bearer. According to history, the spoils of war were given to the victor and they stood proudly on the pile of their spoils while others honored them. In the life of the church, we have turned this Glorification of self into an of salvation. Our Saints, through their spiritual and physical struggles were granted a place in God’s Eternal Kingdom. This is depicted in our iconography through the blessed Halo. The true spoils of our spiritual struggles are inheriting the Eternal Kingdom for our Lord. Our Saints represent the true victors in our life in the church and as a trophy, we offer to these individuals the following icons which are steeped with meaning. The icon of St. George. The icon of and the burning bush. The icon and story of Moses receiving the advice to delegate his lesser duties to “able men from all the people, such as fear God, men who are trustworthy and who hate a bribe…”.

Welcome to St. George Greek Orthodox Church

Exodus 18:13–27

12 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, offered a burnt offering and sacrifices to God; and Aaron came with all the elders of to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God. 13 On the morrow Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood about Moses from morning till evening. 14 When Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, “What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand about you from morning till evening?” 15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God; 16 when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God and his decisions.” 17 Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “What you are doing is not good. 18 You and the people with you will wear yourselves out, for the thing is too heavy for you; you are not able to perform it alone. 19 Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God be with you! You shall represent the people before God and bring their cases to God; 20 and you shall teach them the statutes and the decisions and make them know the way in which they must walk and what they must do. 21 Moreover choose able men from all the people, such as fear God, men who are trustworthy and who hate a bribe; and place such men over the people as rulers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. 22 And let them judge the people at all times; every great matter they shall bring to you, but any small matter they shall decide themselves; so it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you. 23 If you do this, and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all this people also will go to their place in peace.” 24 So Moses gave heed to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he had said. 25 Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people, rulers of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties, and of tens. 26 And they judged the people at all times; hard cases they brought to Moses, but any small matter they decided themselves. 27 Then Moses let his father-in-law depart, and he went his way to his own country.

As Jethro instructed Moses, so the hierarchy of our Holy Church runs today. These “able men” for us here in St. George are the foundation of Christ’s work within the stewardship we have been entrusted with by God. They are my right and my left hand, and I could not do anything without them. Furthermore, our families could not find a home in this communal family without their presence and blessed offering. We thank them, we honor them, and we encourage others to join them if they are inspired to.

May God continue to bless us all.

“Listen now to my voice; I will give you counsel, and God be with you!”

Philoptochos News By Olga Delorey

As Philoptochos winds down for the summer break, we thank everyone who has supported our philanthropic efforts so generously. We truly could not do this without each and every one of you helping us fulfill our mission as “friend of the poor”. We are slowly recovering from this past year’s pandemic lockdowns. While we still should remain vigilant, we look forward to gathering together in our beautiful house of worship to pray and thank God for our many blessings.

Congratulations to the incoming Board of Directors for 2021-2023: Jan Gallas, President; Olga Delorey and Eliana Georgelos, Co-Vice Presidents; Antonia Kananis, Treasurer; Zanetta Laskaris, Assistant Treasurer; Elaine Euripidou, Secretary; Cathy Contompasis, Assistant Secretary; Lucy Brady, Joanne Diamantis, Alice Giakoumis and Aleka Menagias. At this time we extend our thanks to Elena Sikamiotis who faithfully served on our Board for the past six years. Our heartfelt gratitude to the following Soup Kitchen Bag Lunch sponsors: Faith & Mike Adamec (May) and Elena Sikamiotis (June).

So why does Philoptochos exist? Why do we work so hard to raise money for charitable giving? While it is impressive to list the organizations we serve, what better way to tell you about the impact we make than sharing letters from those who have been the recipient of our good works.

“IN THEIR OWN WORDS”

To All of Your Gracious Hearts: My sister and I whole heartedly appreciate this gift card to replenish our food supply. Things have been difficult for us and it is a beautiful thing that there are still people out there to give their kindness back. Much love and respect, ~ Rebecca and Chelsea (Schenectady, NY)

My husband, Chris, had a kidney transplant on May 17th [2021] at Albany Medical Center. He was given one of your homemade pillows after surgery. What a wonderful thing you all are doing! He used it every day while in the hospital. He even uses it now that he is home. Shhh! Don’t tell him but I use it when he isn’t looking. How nice of you all to do this. It is truly appreciated! Thank you and may God bless you all! ~ Lori & Chris (Rome, NY)

Women of the Greek Church: Thank you for the food card for Price Chopper. The minister [Father Peter Daratsos] who we got it from said the ladies at his church bought them. I was in Viet Nam. I was pretty messed up and came back more messed up. Nobody gave me nothing and called me names but nobody cared what happened. Nobody gave me nothing except you girls and that means a lot. I love you very much. I want to give all of you a Christmas present but I only have this Star from an Army Flag to give you all. I want to give it to you good girls. Merry Christmas. ~ Al (U.S. Military Veteran)

You made our Thanksgiving a Happy One! ~ Rebecca (Mom), John, Regina, Illyana (Kids)

Dear Ladies, Thank you so much for the Care Package. It gave me needed items. Whether candy or soap, it is a great help. I can use what I don’t spend to better provide to my family. Thank you for the time you took to prepare my package and the continued opportunity to care for my family.

~Staff Sergeant Lane (Member of U.S. Armed Forces stationed in the )

I just want to say thank you for doing what you did for me. I really appreciate it a whole lot and even though my son can’t really talk, he wants to thank you too. ~ Charelle & Tayvon (Schenectady, NY)

“...for I was hungry and you gave me food ...... inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren, you did it to Me” Matthew 25: 35-40

Fellowship News

FELLOWSHIP NEWS:

Greetings from the Fellowship group!

Although summer didn’t officially arrive until June 20, we have been enjoying summer weather since mid May. The months of June, July and August bring family vacations, graduations and weddings. Here at St. George, we are in the midst of our preparations for a September festival. The planning committee hopes to make it as close to past festivals as possible, with people gathering inside the Hellenic Center for our famous Greek dinners and pastries, as well as outside under a tent for souvlaki, gyro, loukoumathes and dancing. The committee is planning a somewhat condensed version that will be safe, fun and hopefully will generate an income that will keep our church financially solvent.

The Fellowship group has been meeting for lunch since March. Our most recent gathering took place on June 10th, following the Ascension liturgy. Fourteen people attended and our guest of honor was little George Nektarios who entertained us by walking around and around the entire Hellenic Center with his walker and a huge smile on his face! We are all so blessed to have this precious little boy and his parents in our midst.

August brings us the Great Feast of the Dormition of the Holy Theotokos on August 15th preceded by a fourteen day strict fast. Especially during this period of time, Father Neofitos and Presvytera Catherine chant the Small and Great Paraklesis, seeking the intercession of the Holy Theotokos for the welfare of all those of us who are living. Please join us in church for these beautiful services.

The majority of our Fellowship members are involved one way or another in working the festival in various capacities. We encourage everyone to become involved, whether you are parishioners or friends of St. George. Giving of our time and an enormous amount of effort is a requirement for those volunteers who wish to make our festival a success. Let’s all work together for the benefit of St. George!

Fellowship meetings will not take place during July, August or September due to the festival. We wish you all a wonderful summer.

Below you will find a few photos from our June Fellowship luncheon.

EVERY PORTION MATTERS!

Once upon a time, a festival was to be held in a certain village. To ensure there would be enough wine for the celebration, each member of the village agreed to pour one bottle of his best wine into a large cask. “If I fill my bottle with water,” reasoned one villager, “the dilution will be so slight, who will notice?” But when the feast and time for merrymaking commenced, and the cask was tapped, nothing but water poured forth. Every member in the village had reasoned alike: “My portion will not be missed!”

Compassionate stewardship is an attitude and a way of life. (www.stewardship.goarch.org)

Welcome to St. George Greek Orthodox Church

Scripture is filled with passages of God’s call for us to be generous, loving, compassionate givers. The priority of compassionate stewardship is not to pay the bills. It is about how we, as a community, can do God’s work with love and compassion. It is less about the parish’s need to receive, and more about our need to give. It is our generosity with the gifts and blessings God has entrusted to us.

GREEK FESTIVAL - We hope to see everyone at our Annual St. George Greek Festival September 10 and 11, 2021. We need everyone’s help to make our festival a success. Please contact us to volunteer your services! Many hands make the task lighter. While the festival provides an opportunity for us to share our Orthodox faith and Greek culture with the greater community-at-large, the reality is that the proceeds from the annual festival keep the doors of our church open. Let us all come together to help each other and help our St. George Church. We want St. George to be here for our children, grandchildren, and beyond. All our Great Feasts of the church are connected and funded by our biggest fundraising event of the year.
