Ancient Fortifications, Modern Firepower, and Warlord Politics a Study on the Siege of Xi'an and Its Historical Significance

Department of History The University of British Columbia Vancouver, Canada Date August 28, 2002 Abstract The Warlord period (1916-28) is a much-neglected era in modern Chinese scholarship. Scholars tend to ignore it because the events were complicated and the warlords acted without an ideological commitment. They are seen as violent but unsophisticated thugs with minimum affects on the history of Chinese military. The Siege of Xi'an (April to November 1926) demonstrated the fallacy of this assumption and the uniqueness of the warlord military system. The warlords managed to fuse the Chinese and Western military experience in a hybrid warring style. -

WORKING THE MARGINS: WOMEN IN THE COMIC BOOK INDUSTRY by WESLEY CHENAULT Under the Direction of Marian Meyers ABSTRACT Women have been involved in the writing, illustrating, and production of comic books at almost every step of the genre’s development. The years between the late 1960s and the late 1990s were tumultuous for the comic book industry. At the societal level, these years were saturated with changes that challenged normative ideas of sex roles and gender. The goal of this study is two-fold: it documents the specific contributions to the comic book industry made by the women interviewed, and it addresses research questions that focus on gender, change, and comic books. This project asks: What was the role and status of women in the comic book industry between the early 1970s and late 1990s? By utilizing moderately scheduled, in- depth interviews with women working in the comic book industry during this period, this study explores their experiences and treatment while working in an insular, male- dominated field. -

His three-year visit coincided with the turbulent period when revolu tion broke out in Nepal and Tibet was conquered by Red China. In this account of his travels he describes his own experi ences and gives much new and fascinating information about the people he was liv ing among. tie met lamas and explorers, princes and adventurers, saints and ministers. He visited Bhutan, which has been pene trated by only a dozen Europeans in the twelve centuries of its history; Kalim- pong, the terminus of the great caravan route which leads from Lhasa to India; the home of the Sherpas, whose customs have long been ignored by Europeans who concentrate on their abilities as climbers; and Tibet itself, where he was initiated into the mysteries of its religion, and studied the exquisite Tibetan paint ing and literature. He witnessed the ex traordinary trance of an "oracle-priest"; the mystical marathon run by the Yogis every twelve years; and a royal Sikkimese wedding, at which the weather-makers produced torrents of rain by mistake. He also discusses the complicated marital re lationships in Tibet, where women hold an exalted position and polyandry is common. This book is respectfully and lovingly dedicated to my teachers, Ajahn Chah & Ajahn Sumedho, to whom I owe great gratitude for the incalculable spiritual blessings they have brought into this world; and to Karl Gjellerup, the insightful and visionary groundbreaker who responded to the call for Buddhist poets to “do their work,” and thus wrote ‘The Pilgrim Kamanita’ – may the efforts that he made bring him to the perfect peace of Nirvana. © Abhayagiri Monastic Foundation 2010 Abhayagiri Buddhist Monastery 16201 Tomki Road Redwood Valley California 95470 USA www.abhayagiri.org 2 ‘Twas life’s bright game And Death was ‘he.’ Walter de la Mare Ding Dong Bell, 23 ~ The blessèd end of all things eternal: do you know how I attained it? There is no need to have read the earlier book in order to make sense of this one, however, should you wish to go to the source from which many of the characters and scenes of this tale have sprung, an English version of it is to be found on this same web-site, at http://www.abhayagiri.org/main/book/366/ This book was originally projected to be published entirely as a serial novel, appearing one chapter at a time on the first day of every month, over a couple of years. -
