INTRODUCTION Welcome festival-goers. A sincere thank you to our regulars for their steadfast support and a warm welcome to newcomers for giving LICAF a go. This year is our sixth festival and we continue to refine, adapt and add to our programme to keep it relevant, fresh and challenging too. This year we have more special guests than ever before, an expanded Clocktower (which maintains its intimacy), a bigger social, “out of hours” programme and more new countries represented including Russia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, India and Nepal. Our partnership with Wacom, Lancaster University, the University of Cumbria and the National Cartoonists’ Society continues to grow and we welcome our new partners, University and Lyon BD Festival, with whom we expect to work more closely over coming months. We also welcome back Amiens Comics Festival, the Finnish Institute, a fresh delegation from the Netherlands and representatives from the Flemish EVENTS Literature Fund. Times, dates and venues for A huge thank you to our funders this year’s amazing events and partners but most of all to our 4 tremendous team of volunteers without whom we’d be lost, fumbling around in a sea of intent! Julie, Carole, Sharon, Marianne, Aileen, Matt, Nick, Steve, John, Jo and Chris

Being a comic hero has traditionally been the dominion of the male. This is about to be challenged through a new exhibition called ‘Hero(ine)s’ featuring iconic comic heroes re-interpreted and reimagined in their female form. The exhibition features more than twenty original artworks where comic artists have been challenged to reinvent their chosen male superhero in female form and contribute a narrative to explain their choice of heroine and their perceptions of how women are represented in the comic genre.

FESTIVAL JOURNAL If you see a tall man with curly hair walking around this year’s festival, quietly observing events, interviewing guests and scribbling eagerly into a sketchbook, the chances are it’s Graeme McNee, our official Festival Comic Journalist. In 2016 Graeme worked with the Edinburgh International Festival to produce a series of documentary-style comics journalling the event. This year we have invited him to LICAF to create a similar series of behind-the-scenes comics, to be printed in a limited edition risograph zine. Graeme will be interviewing staff, guests, attendees and Kendal locals. If you see him please feel free to say hello and tell him about your experience of this year’s festival. If you would rather have your own say, then feel free to make your own comic using one of our templates (see below).

YOUR FESTIVAL, YOUR VOICE

This year we invite all attendees, guests and staff to pick up a pen and have a go at making their own comic journal! Around the various venues you will find a blank comic template to fill in as you like. Don’t worry about your drawing skill (or lack of) – badly drawn stickmen, strange blobs, abstract patterns and surrealist masterpieces are all welcome! The most interesting entries will be collected into a special pull-out supplement that is part of the official LICAF Comic Journal. More details will be on the templates themselves so look out for them!

TRACES OF THE GREAT WAR LAUNCHES AT THE FESTIVAL

‘Traces of the Great War’ is an ambitious anthology of new illustrated short stories featuring over twenty internationally acclaimed comic book artists, graphic novelists and writers. The stories explore the continued relevance and resonance of the First World War and its aftermath in our lives today. Part of the 14-18 NOW, the UK’s arts programme for the First World War centenary, the creative collaboration re-evaluates the impacts and legacy of WWI across a diversity of cultural, geographical and narrative viewpoints. The aim is to introduce new audiences to the narrative of the Great War through the immediacy and wide appeal of the comic artform. Traces of the Great War features contributions from both the UK and around the world. The anthology includes a number of collaborations between graphic artists and writers – Dave McKean with poet Simon Armitage, Sean Phillips with novelist Ian Rankin – and between artists and illustrators who have never worked together before such as Juan Díaz Canales and Kris, Régis Hautière and Thomas von Kummant. ‘Traces of the Great War’ anthology launches in October 2018 at the Lakes International Comic Art Festival, Kendal and Salon du livre d’Albert in France, and is accompanied by touring exhibitions and a wide-ranging education programme.
