This study is the third annual study of diversity of characters in prime time television programming. The study examined the first two episodes of each prime time entertainment series airing on the six broadcast networks. The findings indicate that despite ongoing emphasis, encouragement, and pressure on the part of media advocates, civil rights groups, government officials, and even some entertainment industry leaders, the networks have yet to produce a prime time -

The Female Gothic Connoisseur: Reading, Subjectivity, and the Feminist Uses of Gothic Fiction By Monica Cristina Soare A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Ian Duncan, Chair Professor Julia Bader Professor Michael Iarocci Spring 2013 1 Abstract The Female Gothic Connoisseur: Reading, Subjectivity, and the Feminist Uses of Gothic Fiction by Monica Cristina Soare Doctor or Philosophy in English University of California, Berkeley Professor Ian Duncan, Chair In my dissertation I argue for a new history of female Romanticism in which the romance – and particularly the Gothic romance – comes to represent the transformative power of the aesthetic for the female reader. The literary figure in which this formulation inheres is the Female Quixote – an eighteenth-century amalgamation of Cervantes's reading idealist and the satirized figure of the learned woman – who embodies both aesthetic enthusiasm and a feminist claim on the world of knowledge. While the Female Quixote has generally been understood as a satirical figure, I show that she is actually at the forefront of a development in British aesthetics in which art comes to be newly valued as a bulwark against worldliness. Such a development arises as part of mid-eighteenth-century sensibility culture and changes the meaning of an aesthetic practice that had been to that point criticized and satirized – that of over-investment in the arts, associated, as I show, with both the figure of the connoisseur and of the Female Quixote. -

It is tempting to begin with a truism: nothing comes from nothing. This is a belief articulated by many in the twentieth century, among whom George Steiner in After Babel, where he presents culture as a long chain of translations and transformations of verbal, thematic or formal constants. The problem raised by the notion of a syntax of culture, however, is the same as with language, as exemplified by de Saussure’s distinction between langue and parole: if all one ever does is move around “building blocks” following the constraints imposed by a system, what of individual creativity? If the question is, generally speaking, of little import to most speakers of a given language, things are different when it comes to art and culture: finding one’s voice, embodying a sort of progress for one’s chosen form of expression and leaving one’s mark on the latter, is what being an artist is about. The question of whether there is such a thing as true artistic singularity might be insoluble (no artist exists, who has not been influenced in some way, no matter how unpleasant the idea might be to him)1; however, one could say that in the field of popular culture, the twenty-first century inverts the proposition, especially in the collaborative form of art that is the cinema. -

The second annual Opera Competition and Festival comes to Szeged once again, enriching its cultural life. The Festival aims to rejuvenate the art form, and achieves this goal through unprecedented international cooperation. Playing Nice: The Limitations and Stereotypes Placed on Female Hero Representation in Video Games. Master of Arts (Radio, Television, and Film), May 2014, 133 pp., 22 figures, bibliography, 50 titles. This thesis provides an investigation of how gender stereotypes affect the narrative, mechanics, and experience of three different console based video games (Venetica, WET, and Velvet Assassin) with female protagonist. Each game is addressed within separate case study chapters and discusses how gender is integrated and intertwined with each narrative structure, image representation, and interactivity. Further analysis is provided in each case study as gender is addressed across several parts of each game, beginning with the female protagonist’s role as hero, her representation throughout the game (i.e. body image, attire, and weapons), and the game play experience. In conclusion, this thesis shows that the protagonist gender within a video game does affect the game in its entirety. More specifically, all three female heroines discussed in this thesis showcases stereotypes associated with the dominant sexual representation of female video game characters, as well as similar traditional feminine and masculine stereotypes associated with heroines in film and television. This provides for rather problematic representations of female heroes, alone with the games designed for them which are equally as stereotypical in their narrative, mechanics, and game play. -

TOWARDS TRANSMODERNISM: Transcendence, Technospirituality, and Technoculture Felicity Van Rysbergen (B.A. Hons, University of Melbourne) Submitted in total fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2011 Journalism and Media Research Centre The University of New South Wales 2 ABSTRACT This thesis argues that the pervasive merging of technocultural and sacred metaphors uncovers a longstanding Western tradition of inscribing the technologically new with the language of mysticism – a transcendental excess that underlies the logic of late capitalist notions of progress and evolution. By claiming that the transcendent moment has utterly saturated our technological desires, preserving an originary sense of the sacred at the inventive heart of science and technology, it sees this ‘technocultural transcendence’ as a model for thinking about an ironic return of grand narratives like metaphysics, truth, and the absolute, used wittingly to revitalise theory just as its last gasp has (perhaps prematurely) been proclaimed. The thesis therefore also seeks to theorise an emerging ‘transmodernity,’ or the post of postmodernism, through critical cultural readings of key transcendent myths in technoculture – Italian Futurism (art), cyberpunk (science fiction), cyberfeminism (film and performance art), and Integral theory (secular transformative spirituality). Each chapter offers examples of how the twinned concepts of transcendence and technology help create the conditions for the emergence of transmodernism, and works to provide potential examples of a resulting transmodern methodology in action. Throughout this thesis, the burgeoning desire for reconstructing what was once deconstructed, fragmented, and disavowed is examined, not to simply return past foci of theoretical enquiry to the margins or the marginalised to the centre, but to reveal the primary message of transmodernism – that both deconstruction and reconstruction hold equal significance on a continuum of understanding socio-cultural change.
