This study is the third annual study of diversity of characters in prime time television programming. The study examined the first two episodes of each prime time entertainment series airing on the six broadcast networks. The findings indicate that despite ongoing emphasis, encouragement, and pressure on the part of media advocates, civil rights groups, government officials, and even some entertainment industry leaders, the networks have yet to produce a prime time season that is representative of the diversity that young people experience and will undoubtedly continue to experience as maturing adults. Fell Colors 2000-01: Prime Time Diversity Report 4 Fun During the Fall 2001-02 season, a youth watching prime time on the six major television networks would most likely see: Family and Youth Family structures being more obvious for white youth than for youth of color. O The majority of white youth interacting with their parents but only a fourth of Latino youth doing the same. O African American families nearly exclusively serving as the focus of situation comedies. O African American families headed by professionals and shown as more affluent than white families. O Family life not serving as a central program focus for Asian/Pacific Islanders, Latinos or Native Americans. Race and Ethnicity O A world still primarily populated by able-bodied, single, heterosexual, white males under 40. One on One,UPN A world of more diversity in the 10 o'clock hour, but a more homogenous and segregated one during the 8 o'clock hour when he/she is most likely to be watching television. O A world in which the overall number of Latino faces increased from last year, though the majority were found in secondary and tertiary roles and nearly half of these characters held low status positions and occupations. O A world with few Native Americans and a world where Native American women do not exist. Gender, Identity and Equity O A continuing stark contrast between occupations held by men and women. O Marital and parental status that was more easily identifiable for women than men. An increased visibility of gay and lesbian characters, with white males playing the majority of roles. As our culture's primary storyteller, television creators have the power to break down stereo- types, promote inclusivity and build greater understanding. Can it better serve both the developmental needs and aesthetic desires of our nation's young people? What kinds of opportunities does and can it provide for cross-cultural learning? Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television.     About the Centro Film Collection The Centro Library and Archives houses one of the most extensive collections of films documenting the Puerto Rican experience. The collection includes documentaries, public service news programs; Hollywood produced feature films, as well as cinema films produced by the film industry in Puerto Rico. Presently we house over 500 titles, both in DVD and VHS format. Films from the collection may be borrowed, and are available for teaching, study, as well as for entertainment purposes with due consideration for copyright and intellectual property laws. Film Lending Policy Our policy requires that films be picked-up at our facility, we do not mail out. Films maybe borrowed by college professors, as well as public school teachers for classroom presentations during the school year. We also lend to student clubs and community-based organizations. For individuals conducting personal research, or for students who need to view films for class assignments, we ask that they call and make an appointment for viewing the film(s) at our facilities. "Television Viewing Among Blacks" shows that TV viewing within black households is 48% higher than all other households. In 1990, black households viewed an average 69.8 hours of TV a week. Non-black households watched an average 47.1 hours. The three highest-rated prime-time series among black audiences are "A Different World," "The Cosby Show" and "Fresh Prince of Bel Air," Nielsen said. All are on NBC and all feature blacks. "Advertisers and marketers are mainly concerned with age and income, and not race," said Doug Alligood, VP-special markets at BBDO, New York. "Advertisers and marketers target shows that have a broader appeal and can generate a large viewing audience." Mr. Alligood said this can have significant implications for general-market advertisers that also need to reach blacks. "If you are running a general ad campaign, you will underdeliver black consumers," he said. "If you can offset that delivery with those shows that they watch heavily, you will get a small composition vs. the overall audience." Hit shows -- such as ABC's "Roseanne" and CBS' "Murphy Brown" and "Designing Women" -- had lower ratings with black audiences than with the general population because "there is very little recognition that blacks exist" in those shows.

REPUBLICAN PALACE, BAGHDAD - NIGHT A feast is being celebrated one year after the dictator’s arrest. INT. AT THE BANQUET TABLE - NIGHT …..is a young American soldier called CHAD. He is sandwiched between a drunken officer called STING RAY. A military yes man known for his biting sarcasm, and a woman, called EUROPE. A shiite with wizened eyes and bright red lips. A bounty of food is laid out before the guests, the champagne is flowing and good will is thick in the air. Sting Ray picks up the champagne bottle, pours himself another glass. CLOSE ON Chad talking soberly to Europe. CHAD The tribes aren’t happy. They’re no longer protesting quietly but are shouting insults against us. EUROPE Leave politics alone. There’s more interesting talk of late like the intrepid thief Fortune, who’s holding sway over one half of Baghdad.
