In the Netherlands, I must thank Pim Westerkamp at the Museum Nusantara, Delft, for taking me on a tour through the collection and making archival materials available to me. Thanks also to Marie-Odette Scalliet at the University of Leiden, for directing me toward more of her research and for showing me some of the university library’s Southeast Asia collection. I also appreciate the generosity of Peter Boomgaard, of the KITLV in Leiden, for discussing aspects of my research with me. Thanks to the staff at the KIT Fotobureau in Amsterdam, who responded admirably to my vague request for ‘landscape’ photographs from the Netherlands Indies.

Cover Page The handle http://hdl.handle.net/1887/59468 holds various files of this Leiden University dissertation Author: Odegard, Erik Title: Colonial careers : Johan Maurits van Nassau-Siegen, Rijckloff Volckertsz. van Goens and career-making in the Seventeenth-Century Dutch Empire Date: 2018-01-18 77 3. Rising through the ranks The early career of Rijckloff van Goens, 1629-1655 This chapter will examine the early career of Rijckloff Volckertsz. van Goens in Asia in the period 1629-1655. This early period of Van Goens’ career is a striking example of a meteoric rise throughout the VOC’s ranks by a man from a relatively low backgro und. It thus forms an interesting contrast with the appointment of Johan Maurits to the governorship of Brazil, as explored in the previous chapter. Johan Maurits, a high (though impoverished) nobleman, was appointed to a high office within the colonial hierarchy of the WIC on the basis of his networks and experience within the Republic itself. Rijckloff van Goens, by contrast, built his career step- by-step within the VOC’s Asian hierarchy, advancing from a lowly position to the rank of a member of the Council of the Indies and commander of the homeward-bound fleet in 1654- 1655. The early career of Van Goens can be used to test a number of hypotheses, as the ways in which he achieved this advancement will reveal the internal structure of the company in Asia. How could an orphan in the company’s service rise so far through the ranks? Were familial ties important, as we would expect if we accept Adams’s thesis,

It is important to understand that all cross-cultural contacts between the peoples in the archipelago and westerners depended on seaborne trade and the vessels which plied the maritime routes. This was the only means of transportation and communication. As a consequence, cross-cultural contacts took place mainly in the port cities and coastal trading outposts. This can be clearly seen in the cases of our two ordinary Europeans: Jacob de Roy and Georg Naporra. Keywords: Maritime Connections; Cross-Cultural Contact INTRODUCTION by the late eighteenth century had sizeable non- European populations Somalis in particular as they Asian-European relations were largely a one-way took service in large numbers in the merchant maritime traffic between Europe and Asia during navy. We can still notice their presence in modern the 18th century. No Asian ships went to Europe.
