Zyt veel eer verwonderd, dat er niet meer dan één, door Uwe rotkoortzen, en de menigvuldige andere ziektens van Uwen besmettende dampkring zijn weggerukt.1 Van Hogendorp, 1780 Josua van Iperen (1726-1780) was a successful doctor in Batavia, the headquarters of the Dutch East India Company in Asia.2 Until suddenly, he died. In the speech written in his honour, his death was on the influence of the harmful atmosphere. At first, it had seemed that van Iperen was adjusting, even thriving, but in the end, a fever had gained the upper hand over his body.3 During the early modern period, these fears about the dangerous effects

    JIM VAN DER MEER MOHR Gouverneur-generaals van Nederlands-Indië in beeld In dit artikel worden de penningen beschreven die de afgelo- pen eeuwen zijn geproduceerd over de gouverneur-generaals van Nederlands-Indië.     DE TIJGERSGRACHT TE BATAVIA. DOOR S. KALFF. Thans moet men ze zoeken, de voornaamste, de deftigste gracht van het oude Batavia, maar in de dagen van de loffelijke Compagnie was zij een slagader van het verkeer, de wijk der notabelen bij uitnemendheid, door dichters bezongen en door schilders, althans door teekenaars „affgeconterfeit." 't Was geenszins toeval dat de hoofdgrachten der stad meerendeels gedoopt waren met namen, aan de tropische dierwereld ontleend. Er was een Kaaimans-, een Leeuwinne-, een Rhinocer-, een Tijgersgracht, met nog een Buffelsrivier, Plattegrond van Batavia met het kasteel. verbonden door ettelijke dwarsgrachten. Batavia was eene stad naar vader- landsch model aangelegd en de rivier waaraan zij gelegen was, de Groote Rivier, maakte zelve, tusschen gemetselde beschoeiingen ingeklemd, de voor- naamste gracht uit. Uit deze van de Blauwe Bergen afstroomende Tjiliwong had de waterver- deeling plaats in het net van zestien grachten, waarmede het college van heemraden de hoofdstad in den loop der jaren begiftigd had. In later dagen zou Batavia, wat den plattegrond en de bouworde harer huizen betreft, wel eens een tweede uitgaaf van Amsterdam genoemd worden, doch de slingerende DE TIJGERSGRACHT TË BATAVIA. 445 stroomlijn der Amsterdamsche grachten werd hier gemist. De stad was gebouwd op een alluviaal en moerassig terrein, en, eenmaal die plaats gekozen, was het natuurlijk dat men door een samenstel van grachten en vaarten den weeken grond trachtte te draineeren en tevens in het verkeer te water te voorzien.

De tekst in het ingevoegde gele kader luidt: „Een van de bekendste gouverneurs-generaal was Jan Pieterszoon Coen. Hij verdreef de Engelsen van het eiland Java en stichtte er de stad Batavia. Batavia heet nu Djakarta en is de hoofdstad van Indonesië. Batavia werd al gauw het middelpunt van alle Nederlandse koloniën in het Oosten‟. De tekst in het grootste kader luidt: „De bezetting van Oost-Indie lukte beter. Men benoemde een gouverneur-generaal in Indië die de opdracht had de boel daar goed te besturen en alle zaken “eerlijk” te regelen… Dat daar wel enige dwang aan te pas kwam, vond iedereen toen normaal: blanken stonden immers boven gekleurde mensen?‟ Op het plaatje is Jan Pieterszoon Coen te herkennen. Frits van Dulm Iman Wilhelm Falck (1736-1785) verhuisde als jongeling van Ceylon, het huidige Sri Lanka, naar Utrecht, waar hij rech- ten studeerde. Hij koos niet voor een bestuurlijke loopbaan ‘Zonder eigen gewinne en glorie’ in de Republiek, maar voor een ongewisse carrière in Azië. In 1765 werd hij benoemd tot gouverneur van de VOC-vestiging Ceylon, waar hij een einde maakte aan de oorlog met het binnen- landse koninkrijk Kandy. Gedurende twintig jaar toonde hij een eigenzinnige visie op de te volgen politiek ten opzichte van de opdringende Britse macht in India.
