MEET OUR NEW SRC LEADERS

• Hi, my name is Caitlin. I am one of your new SRC members for 2018. I promise to help make the school an even more fun place to learn and spend your days. I am always there for anyone if you ever need me. Some things I like to do are dancing, singing, reading and helping other kids. Some of my favourite things are animals, my family, friends and of course my school. I will do whatever I can to make this school a better place to be. • Hey everyone! My name is Hunter and I’m one of your 2018 SRC leaders! One of my after school activities is drama/acting. I like to read, take on challenges and be me. Also a little known fact about me is that I have a pug named Elsa and she’s so, so cute! I’d love to help make the school a better place by creating ideas and helping out. • My name is Keira and I am a 2018 Student Representative Council Leader. I love all sports and do out-of-school activities like dancing, gymnastics and soccer. My favourite food is watermelon and I absolutely love the book ‘Wonder’. I want to help the school raise money by having Crazy Hair Days, cake stalls, discos and many other things. I will try to make the school a better place by helping to prevent any bullying. • Hi, I’m Danielle. I’m the youngest child in my family with two older sisters and one older brother. I enjoy singing, dancing and acrobatics and attend classes several times a week. My favourite thing to do is read and I love Roald Dahl books. I’m going to work to make the school an even better place by making sure no-one sits alone on the buddy bench. • Hi my name is Breanna and I’m 10 years old and have grown up in Frederickton. I have a younger brother, Jacob and a younger sister, Courtney. I like to do gymnastics and acrobatics, swimming, soccer and playing with my American girl doll. My favourite movies are Project MC2, A Second Chance and Shooting for the Stars. I try to be a kind, respectful and responsible person. I will help anyone when they need it. • Hello, my name is Jorja and I am really enjoying being a member of the SRC. I hope to deliver some positive changes to our school this year, like a mini soccer field for the 1/2 kids. I enjoy it when my mum lets me help her with her crafts, as I love art. My other interests are singing, dancing and gymnastics. My favourite things are my dog, Ruby, reading, electronics, fruit, animals and listening to music. I am the youngest of seven kids and I love going to the farm with my dad during the school holidays. Twice a week, after school, I attend jazz and hip-hop classes in Kempsey. • Hi my name is Shanae Cooper, i’m in Year 6 and I am a SRC representative. These are the reasons why I got chosen for SRC – I’m a safe, respectful, responsible, helpful and commited young lady who will strive to help the community and the school. I have four brothers, their names are Andrew 25, Damien 20, Tristan 14 and Byron 12. Andrew and Damien have left school and Tristan is in Year 9 and Byron is in Year 7. These are the things I do for the school – I help the other students if they need help, I will go to them if they are on the buddy bench, I will also help the teachers if they want me to do something. I will do my best to be a great SRC Leader.

ROVING REPORT BY HUNTER AND CAITLIN A short time ago, I decided to interview Dylan Schlotterbeck who made a great achievement in making it to the Lower North Coast Swimming Carnival recently. As well as Dylan, six other students also made it through. They were Emma Illingworth, Eden Bennett, Keira Morn and Breanna Reinhold being the girls relay team and Bryce Cooper and Jacob Reinhold in individual events.

Dylan said that he was extremely excited to make it to the next level. He also said that his mum and Nan were great swimmers in their day and that’s what inspired him to do this well. At the time, Dylan was unsure whether he would make it to the next level but was happy and grateful that he had achieved as much as he had. Congratulations to all people who made it to the Lower North Coast Carnival. We hope you enjoyed the day.

Please always make sure your child is equipped with the right school gear including proper school uniform, a hat, a pencil case with all the right gear like coloured pencils and textas, led pencils, ruler, erasers, sharpener, calculator and red and blue pens.

Each week, the grades that go on the playground at lunch change, please check what day your class is on the playground each week and respect these rules. Also Kinder are on the playground at recess ALL THE TIME so please don’t go on the playground at recess if you are in Years 1-6.

Remember seniors, there is always a chance that you could become a library monitor. All you have to do is come up into the library at least once a week and help scan books, put books away and help pack away when the bell rings. These jobs are for Years 4-6 only so if you are interested come and help. Mrs Evans would really appreciate some help so even if you are not selected to be a library monitor you are still welcome to come and help.

Congratulations to the SRC Leaders, House Captains and Vice Captains and the Star Badge students who received their badges at the Week 5 Induction and Star Badge Assembly. Well done to all these people and congrats!!!!

Just a reminder to all students’ netball tryouts are coming up in about 4 weeks. Girls Touch Football is on every Wednesday first half of lunch and Boys Touch Football is on Friday.

Frederickton Public Schools debating team has just recently been to the debating training day on the 30th February at Sawtell Public School. It was a very fun day and we all learnt a lot about the skills of debating and can’t wait to use them in future debating competitions.

THE VALUE OF READING – THE WAY IT WAS! The following article taken from the ‘The Macleay Chronicle’ [(Kempsey, NSW: 1899-1952) Thursday 15th May 1902, page 3] is interesting in light of the sentiments expressed and the efforts that are still being taken (e.g. Premier’s Reading Challenge, Read-more-in-May, Simultaneous Storytime and Book Week) to encourage students to pursue reading.

OPENING SCHOOL LIBRARY Whatever may be said of the education system of this State as a system, the opportunities for learning and improvement are daily being extended in every direction. Beside public libraries and the Sunday school libraries the Education Department is now taking the matter up throughout the State. On Tuesday the Premier opened a library at the Grafton School. On Wednesday the first public opening on this river was celebrated at Frederickton School. Mr E J Byrne the local Inspector presided for the occasion and there was present, beside the scholars, a representative gathering of friends and supporters from all parts of the river, including a large number of ladies. The library at the opening was furnished with about 200 books, a number of which were purchased from the proceeds of a sale of work held some time ago, assisted by private gifts and subscriptions, and a share of the PSAA grant.

Frederickton was en fete, and the school grounds were gay with the bright dresses of the school girls and fair visitors. The day was a holiday and during the early part of the afternoon the children went through some very pretty exercises. The girls performed the maypole dance, wand drill and dumbbell exercises, with the boys going through a rifle drill, etc.

At about 4 o’clock an adjournment was made to the schoolroom which had been tastefully decorated for the occasion with evergreens. The children rendered a chorus of which the opening ceremony commenced.

Mr E J Byrne, local Inspector, on rising said he had promised their esteemed teacher, Mr Hayes, some time ago, that if he could make it fit in with his duties, he would be present to open the library. He was pleased to be there as he regarded the establishment of libraries as a matter of great importance. This was a reading age, and the more the children read the greater their knowledge and the better they were able to take their places in life. Children would read and it was necessary to supply something which would tend to form character; without that they were useless to the State and as citizens. The reading of good books, the speaker said would assist in moulding character, which would be better for the children growing up and better for the State. They could not read about great statesmen or noble women without being more or less influenced for good. The mere matter of being able to read and write was not the only essential to character. The gaols were full of clever people but they lacked the one essential of character. The library would be full of good books which would be a stimulus in the training of upright and honest citizens. There was nothing he knew of which would be more helpful in forming the characters of children and every school library should be a fountain from which the children should draw useful information. Mr Byrne concluded a highly interesting and appropriate speech by saying he felt sure all the books in connection with the library had been carefully selected, and he trusted this library would be one of many opened during the year.

Mr P C Basche said he felt greatly honoured in being asked to open the library. He referred at some length to the education system and the benefits to be obtained from reading. The world was a stage in which everyone was called to play his part and it was for the boys and girls present to read and think and decide what part they were going to take. A love of reading could be cultivated and apart from the instructions it imparted it also gave pleasure. Mr Basche said he would wish to see subjects taught in the schools more suited to the walk of life of the children. He thought agriculture should be included in the teaching in rural districts. After some further remarks Mr Byrne handed the speaker a gold key, presented by the teachers with which to open the library. Mr Basche then congratulated Mr Hayes on being amongst the first to get together the library and afterwards declared it open. He expressed his thanks for the key which would always be treasured by him as a memento of a very pleasing function.

Mr E P Noonan humorously sympathised with Mr Hayes in the amount of work he had to do for such an occasion, he had come down to see what it was like. He was pleased to see the enthusiasm of the visitors which led them to be present in such numbers as to almost crowd out the children. He thought people should visit them and make themselves better acquainted with the workings. Gatherings of that kind should be annual affairs and the speaker went on to describe what he had seen as a boy in the shape of annual gatherings when the work of the school was displayed for public inspection. Such annual exhibitions caused parents and the public to take an interest in the schools. Mr Noonan afterwards proceeded to impress upon the children the value of books quoting from Crabbe. He concluded by urging the children to:

Champion the right and then pursue thy ways, Heedless alike of slander or of praise.

At the close of the speaking the children rendered a patriotic song and some further choruses after which the proceedings were brought to a close with the National Anthem.
